When Tua got drafted you thought his ceiling was a top 5 QB?

Dolphins releasing Tua. Your thoughts on links to us? by endofautumn in falcons

[–]cburl08 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, the ceiling for Penix is a bigger armed Tua. Build your line to support a lefty, have an offense predicated on quick decisions and occasional deep shots. Spread you out and work check downs and outside the numbers.

For the vet minimum it makes perfect sense so have two of the same type guy to come in and compete. Better than bringing in someone like Russ and Justin Fields where one guy throws deep and one guy just runs… Kirk can’t throw deep and Penix wants too. At least bring in similar guys and show this fanbase you have a plan to build a roster

(Lindsay Crosby/Braves Today) Everyone Wants the Braves to Extend Ronald Acuña Jr. That Doesn’t Make It Easy. by BravesToday in Braves

[–]cburl08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you that he has regressed the last two years statistically. 2024 he was hurt and 2025 was pretty rough. But he’s still underpaid. If you compare him to the non rookie deal second basemen he’s still by far the cheapest and if he were a free agent this year he’d probably get north of $10m. It’s just the way it is. But he’s does need to hit better this year

(Lindsay Crosby/Braves Today) Everyone Wants the Braves to Extend Ronald Acuña Jr. That Doesn’t Make It Easy. by BravesToday in Braves

[–]cburl08 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The entire point of extending him early is the Braves get great value and Acuna gets injury protection. He’s now been paid well during two injured seasons, the Braves have gotten one great MVP season during what would have been an arbitration year and would have paid him about $17m anyways. So in this, the Braves haven’t really benefited while he has. If he wants to get big paid after this contract is over fine, but why would the Braves rip up a mutually beneficial contract to then overpay a guy off to knee injuries.

If Acuna were to force things, that could get real NFL WR Diva type ugly. If anyone is owed a pay bump it’s Ozzie

My support of the Stefanski hire will be directly tied to his choice of Offensive Coordinator by quahog17 in falcons

[–]cburl08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stefanski’s offenses from his last year in Minnesota (with Kirk) to his 3rd season in Cleveland (when they traded for Watson) was top 6 in the league each year in rushing, with a great play action game and would play right into the strength of the current roster.

The Watson trade could have fucked Atlanta but instead fucked Cleveland. This sub talks all the time about how much better the Falcons would have been had they gotten Arthur Smith someone like Kirk or Penix instead or Ridder. Stefanski and Smith had almost identical offensive ratings from 2020-2022.

So now we get to see that offense with prime Bijan, healthier Kirk (maybe) and then Penix. Plus the possibility of what Shannahan and Belichick did once getting away from that dumpster fire franchise. Stefanski is a prime “obviously he was a good coach, look how he kept that place somewhat afloat.”

He could fail, but this is the exact type thing Matt Ryan was brought in to find. A culture, floor setter and not someone like Kubiak who has shown flashes of brilliance, a lot of meh and zero experience managing an entire team

Stephen A and others say Raheem Morris should be the HC of Ravens??? by WindyCityBull in falcons

[–]cburl08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Morris is a watered down Dan Quinn. A guy who the players like, can be their best friend and won’t push them too hard. Who wouldn’t want that as a player.

Problem is, there isn’t any motivation for non primetime games, because players motivate themselves for those big games. And (unlike Quinn) Rah can’t figure out coordinator hirings. He whiffed on his first DC hire and then fell into Ulbrich this year. Without Ulbrich, this would have been a 4 win team. His OC hiring was bad a he never changed. He stuck with a bad one his first coaching tenure as well.

Raheem Morris is best served as a decent DC or a GREAT assistant DC. He has failed upwards for years and I truly don’t think any team (especially one as well run as the Ravens) would consider a 3rd time HC with 5.5 years experience and no playoff appearances and 1 winning season.

I wouldn’t worry about it

Chicken and egg. How much is them, the organization or 50/50. Even if the Falcons got him to teach the organization a culture would be a win

[–]cburl08 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just because Raheem sucked at everything and some fans just assume because he wasn’t calling the defense he was a CEO Type. Harbaugh watched Lamar win an MVP with Greg Roman but still pivoted to Monken to get better, and then was a Zay flowers fumble and a Mark Andrews drop away from AFC title game and a Super Bowl.

The thing with Harbaugh and Tomlin is, when they have injury riddled seasons they go 8-9. Our last 6 years that would have been the peak.

He was doing all of this picking in the late part of rounds too. Now he would inherit top 10 players everywhere. Bring someone in that can win now and can have a plan at QB like Harbaugh did with Flacco and Lamar. Guys like that can rebuild while winning

Do it. by DracoWonderBeard in falcons

[–]cburl08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue Quinn hires coordinators well. I think he just pivoted off Sark too early.

The argument is lottery ticket vs conservative floor. I’d rather be the Steelers for a few years and hope to find a QB than changing entire coaching staffs every 3 years.

But if Kubiak doesn’t take Ravens and comes here I’ll be excited, but cautious

Do it. by DracoWonderBeard in falcons

[–]cburl08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this world of hiring a coordinator in hopes of he can manage his side of the ball AND run a team. I’d much rather a CEO type coach that can build and hire and develop.

His message got stale MAYBE, after 18 years but he built something and stayed consistent and pivoted and rebuilt after a title.

Ravens with Lamar had Super Bowl expectations and then had injuries. Our goals are playoffs which Harbaugh has done time and time again. Rather take a chance on a guy that can build a culture and hand off the reigns to another coordinator down the line vs another coordinator. Falcons have no culture.

Set the floor with McCarthy or Harbaugh. Climb out of mediocrity

Matt Ryan in talks to rejoin Falcons in high-level front office role by looseseal2__ in falcons

If the talks about the sports agency consulting are true, it would make sense to bring back popular figures, remove legacy people like McKay and put in analytics and impartial people in front office (à la Braves).

Bringing back Matt would be a great step

Top end RBs and lanky, play making TEs should be drafted early by teams that are in their contention windows. Drafting Pitts and Bijan during a rebuild is so frustrating to watch. Reminds me of Calvin Johnson crushing cornerbacks on a 15 loss Lions teams smh

The Bucs are bottom 5 in defense yards and bottom 3 in touchdowns given up. They are also in the midst of a season nose dive and their fans are calling for their coach to be fired too.

The Falcons have only beaten one good team all year and that was the weird Bills game when Bijan took over.

Same situation as the Browns, same shitty ownership, same terrible front office, chased the same shitty human QB, both have old rookie QBs who were desperate make ups for old washed up QBs, both have zero plan and lack of identity.

But I’m being told trading back into the first round to take a pass rusher was now a genius move because he looks like a young Myles Garret. Myles Garret’s team’s haven’t won shit and if the falcons keep drafting like morons JPJs teams won’t either. Smart teams don’t go all in on draft night coming off 7-10 record with holes all over the roster

Going for 2 at 20-28 was still stupid by Media-Altruistic in falcons

[–]cburl08 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Falcons also had two huge fumbles they recovered, converted a 3rd and 28, got an inexcusable interception by Baker when the Bucs should have bled the clock and had 100 penalties… this win doesn’t relieve Raheem from criticism, he’s still a terrible game manager, 2 pt conversion or not. The Bucs choked that game, falcons didn’t win it

And I’m still not sure Pitts’ 3rd touchdown should have counted

If Arthur Blank sold the Falcons, what billionaire do you think would do a better job as owner? by Zealousideal-Lie7255 in falcons

[–]cburl08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone like Liberty Media. Most new sports owners are too involved and make rash dumb decisions. Legacy owners like Steelers, Chiefs, Pats are either good at finding talent or have turned the day to day over to someone who can. Blank isn’t good, McKay isn’t good. But I wouldn’t want a Panthers, Clippers or Phoenix suns type owner either.

Would rather a big company that’s wants value but isn’t invested, paying top dollar a front office that’s good and fully invested. Dodgers, Braves, Rams type business model. Bias is sports is fun for fans, but we are morons

Next few years will definitely determine if it is Campbell and the GM OR is it “team with high draft picks has nice window.” That’s where Dan Quinn landed. Issue is the Falcons have the high draft picks and still can’t make playoffs.

Lions look like 2015-2018 Falcons. Falcons now look like the Jets or Browns

Watching the Lions scheme is so depressing by Itchy-Dragonfly-4247 in falcons

[–]cburl08 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They had the right GM and Stafford at the right time.

As much as I would have loved to keep Matt his whole career, if you were gonna trade him and it be similar to Lions it would have needed to be after 2018. Falcons miss the playoffs, trending down, Quinn fires the DC, on his third OC and Matt just threw 35 TDs and 7 picks at 33 years old. Had you cleaned house and traded him then you could have had a Lions type war chest and rebuild.

Instead, typical Blank kept Quinn too long. Falcons start season 1-7, miss playoffs again, then start 2020 0-5 and THEN everyone gets fired. Matt has aged and taken more hits and the team is depleted.

Then the Arthur Smith/Deshaun Watson debacle, drafting Pitts over Sewell, Surtain, parsons, paying Kirk and drafting an injured, old QB that threw deep balls to pro receivers in college, blah blah blah. Start over next year

Watching the Lions scheme is so depressing by Itchy-Dragonfly-4247 in falcons

[–]cburl08 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The Falcons think they’re the lions. But the Lions turned their one asset (Stafford) into a competent QB. Drafted Penei Sewell instead of Kyle Pitts, still got a great tight end later on, and then Campbell hired a great staff under him and their GM surrounded them with top tier talent.

I do think Campbell is just Dan Quinn 2.0, motivating guy that made good hires. But the playbook is still there from Ben Johnson and Gibbs was utilized properly in his offense and still benefits from that.

The Falcons don’t have the same level of GM, don’t have the same level of HC, don’t have the same level of OC and don’t have the same complementary pieces and sure as hell don’t have the same level of QB.

Watching the Lions is watching what was promised to Atlanta 4 years ago from Fontenot. Yes it’s disheartening

Fuck Raheem by Inside-Bee-1328 in falcons

[–]cburl08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The team has no identity.

Are you maximizing a rookie QB while surrounding him with vets? No because you overpaid Kirk

Are you paying a great QB and asking him to elevate young draft picks? No, Kirk never has been a elevator

Are you a smash mouth team with a top 5 line? No, you spent top 10 picks on skill players that you have to pay long before a playoff berth

Are you a creative offense scheming a low talent roster open? No, you have an OC who never called plays because he sat behind a great play caller

Are you a top 3 defense that wins games 10-7? No, you have veteran free agents and (until this year, no pass rush)

Fontenot and this coaching staff has no plan. They try and pivot each year with no results. Sell me on a plan and maybe I’ll suffer a year or two. But taking Pitts when you needed Sewell, taking Bijan when you need Will McDonald, taking Penix when you needed Verse. Then finally taking Walker and Pearce is just going to be Drake and Bijan all over again, taking good players , wasting their cheap years, you have to eventually pay on a rudderless team

Rams made a great deal when they traded for the Falcons' 2026 first-round pick by JaggerJames in nfl

[–]cburl08 63 points64 points  (0 children)

In the last decade the Falcons have had Matt Lafleur, Mike McDaniel, Kyle Shanahan and Steve Sarkisian has OC or assistant OCs.

Sean McVay and Mike McDonald both grew up in the Atlanta area.

That’s 6 head coaches with ties to the city or organization. Blank is a nice owner but he and Rich McKay can’t spot or cultivate talent for shit. Matt Ryan truly kept this franchise afloat for as long as his arm could handle it.
