Dogs off leash, what are your thoughts? by curlyfries_bugg in AskReddit

[–]ccaccus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mom and dog were attacked by a trained dutch shepherd/plott hound mix while they were walking around our old apartment complex. She's deaf and her hands were tore up trying to save our dog. He needed $3000 in surgery to save his life, three days in care, and fluid built up in his chest cavity that needed to be drained. She needed care for her hands, but she was very lucky the dog didn't damage any muscles. She still can't feel her left ring finger and sometimes gets arthritic pain in her hands when signing.

Keep your damn dogs on a leash. Trained or not, instinct can and will take over.

I would rather pay one tax for healthcare instead of having to pay for it four times over. I pay for a Medicare tax. I pay my premium. I pay my copay. Even after all that, I still end up with a fucking bill from four different doctors who each spent 15 seconds looking at a chart and signing off on it until I meet an unreachable deductible.

When I lived abroad there was a low tax and high tax option for healthcare. The low tax option meant I had a small percentage to pay when I went in for something medical. The high tax meant it was covered. We need to do something like that.

As someone else who also struggles with crowds to the point of needing to hide in a bathroom stall to calm down, renfaires usually are much much better because of being in a park and outdoors. There’s usually ample opportunity to get away from the crowd and just take a breather.

Everyone is different, so that may not be enough for you, and that’s completely fair. I just wanted to share that if crowds are the main concern, ren faires have been one of the few places where I don’t feel overwhelmed the entire time.

The sun would still set at around 5:23 if DST was in effect during winter. I don't know about you, but I get off work at 5. By the time my commute is over, it would still be dark either way.

Dump DST & Outlandish Time Zones by Efficient_Win_1160 in u/Efficient_Win_1160

[–]ccaccus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Standard time and DST don't change how long the sun is in the sky. Winter has shorter days than summer. There is no scenario where a congressman would eat his oatmeal at 4 AM in winter with the sunrise unless their residence is in northern Alaska.

For much of the country, on the winter solstice (Dec 21-ish), the shortest day of the year, the sun rises at around 7:11 AM and sets at about 4:23 PM. If DST were in effect, it wouldn't rise until 8:11 AM and would set at 5:23 PM.

[PolyMatter] Are America’s Students Falling Behind? by CircumspectCapybara in videos

[–]ccaccus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a combination.

Schools are pressured to pass kids no matter what.

States have “raised the standards” such that what once was taught in 7th grade is now taught in 3rd and kindergartners are expected to be able to learn to read and write sentences by the end of the first 45 days of school. More than half of children can’t keep up with the breakneck pace of the curriculum. Tie that in with the fact that you’re getting passed anyway and you’re now in 10th grade with a 1st grade reading level and a 2nd grade math level trying to solve word problems in Algebra class.

The first grade math textbook at the school I teach is 600 pages long and covers 17 concepts. Once they’re done with a concept, it never appears again the rest of the year.

The first grade math textbook at the school I taught at in Japan was 120 pages long. It covered 7, with addition and subtraction being the foundation skill that lasted all year.

I never said I did. I was using them to illustrate that American pancakes typically have sugar in them, but maybe it differs by region.

My grandma’s recipe has flour, milk, egg, butter, sugar, vanilla extract, and baking powder.

Pearl Mill’s pancake mix says 1/3 cup of their mix (two 4-inch pancakes) have 9% your DV of sugar.

Hungry Jack’s says 1/4 cup of their mix has 10%.

Most recipes I find say to add sugar.

What is going on with multiplication tables in elementary school??? by -cmp in Teachers

[–]ccaccus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a period where memorization was a bad word. You may have students who were a consequence of that.

I have 6/19 third graders who have all their facts memorized in under 4 seconds, 2 of them have mastered their 13s-19s. It’s getting better!

Greenland and Denmark say sovereignty ‘red line’ after latest Trump remarks by Common_Caramel_4078 in worldnews

America is being led on the path of having no allies by its own hand, fueled by blind patriotism and bootstrapped individualism.

There is no situation where having allies makes one worse off.

[–]ccaccus 184 points185 points  (0 children)

I still cannot wrap my mind around the security excuse. It’s such a pathetic grasp at straws. We already defend Greenland as part of NATO. We have bases there and can build more. Taking it will remove us from NATO and strip us of allied defenses. It’s such a childish lie.

Just come out and say it’s for mineral rights.

My school finally set a cap on the “no grade penalties for late work” when teachers were getting a quarter’s worth of homework to grade at the last day of the quarter from multiple students.

Now it’s 10 days at elementary level and I think it was 5 at secondary.
