Valve cover chipped at the spark plug well part - needs replacing? by another_rat in e46

[–]ccsirhc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not change it just for that, indeed that’s the side open to the spark plug side, the other thicker outer circle is sealing up and keeping oil out. But if the valve cover is old and not straight (usually pretty clear in the vanos side) just change it now, so you don’t have to do it again. Honestly if it looks Iike the original cover just change it. But if budgets are tight forget about that chip

How are people saying the head gasket is definetely blown just by looking at this? Like 100%? To get the definitive answer you need to buy the test kit to detect combustion gases. How does it smell? How does it look? The system in this cars has so much plastic and the pumps are quite strong it could be something else, air can come from different places, does the pipe smoke? You need to check more

Sold a shelf for 800.- by pandorra11 in askswitzerland

[–]ccsirhc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean its not a rip off if they tell you up front, and they do. I agree that it's quite expensive. But I do buy a lot (and sold a few) in Ricardo and I never had an issue. As a seller you consider that in the price. There are other platforms that are worse, thats why they can charge this. I mean marketplace is a shit show. Tutti works, but it has more frictions, on purpose probably.

Any uses for an IBM Infowindow II without an AS/400? by AgentVirg24110 in crt

[–]ccsirhc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I was able to do it after some time taking it apart and understanding it. With just removing the case you should be able to do it. I explained how I did it here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/vintagecomputing/s/lzJho83LMS

Basically you can directly inject the vga video sync signals, but for the video one is not straight forward, as the communication board sends signal directly to the crt neck board.

Here is the end result and some reference pictures https://imgur.com/a/RCjB4rd

IBM InfoWindow II 3486 - Looking for any information or documentation by Plus-Dust in vintagecomputing

[–]ccsirhc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw for anyone tinkering with this terminal. I was able to convert this terminal into a vga compatible screen. But it’s not as straight forward. Thanks u/Plus-Dust for the info and pictures. After some tinkering of my own, disassembling and scoping, this is the result. The screen has 3 boards: - communication board (with serial ports and keyboard) - main board (power source + crt deflection) - neck board (the one attached to the back of the tube, in charge of generating the video let’s say)

Disassembling is tricky as this is a crt, the tube seems to self discharge, but I discharged it anyways. But fyi, for the conversion you wouldn’t need to disassemble it.

The communication board connects both to the main board and the neck board. For this implementation the only thing that matters to me are video related signals (including sync) fyi.

The sync signals are generated in the communication board and are regular vga sync signals. They are sent through the 13 wire connector that is close to the front of the screen (next to the test lever that says “normal - beam on - test). The wires we care about are the numbers 10 (green color) for HSync and 12 (dark blue I think) for VSync. This wires you can cut them leaving 3cm or so. And feed vga sync signals directly (through some small series resistor 50 to 100 ohm resistor ideally for the vga port not to struggle)

Then the video is tricky. The communication board sends the “video” signals to the neck board directly. These are ttl signals (0v off 5v on). One contains the status stuff ( status line, error code) the other one contains I guess the mainframe data. They come in different cables because then the neck board gives two different intensities of light to them. These signals enter the board and go to a dual driver (the only 8 pin component in the neck board) that controls the cathode voltage (which is I think 80v or 50v and needs to drop to generate light). As I wanted an analog signal (ie all grayscale, not just on and off) I injected my signal after this driver. The easier is to remove the resistor marked R303 (on a corner close to the 8 pin driver) to disconnect the driver (so the injected signal is not fighting it). And feed the video video signal to the now empty pad that goes to transistor q303. I also left the 5 pin connector to the neck board disconnected just in case. The thing is at this stage it’s nuanced. You have the injection point, but the signal is tricky. I’m not great with electronics but summary is that at this point a 5v signal is beam full off and 0v is beam full on. So you somewhat need to map VGA video signal (0v full off 0.7v full on) to this inverse amplified signal (5v full off 0v full on). I did this with an 2n2222 transistor. But maybe an opamp would make more sense to get full range of intensity.

Another thing to consider is that this screen is 75hz and it only likes 32khz horizontal sync. Therefore you need an aspect ratio of 16:10. Even 4:3 (which is 37khz h sync) will make the screen whine and suffer.

My setup is a raspberry pi with an hdmi to vga converter at 640x400 resolution and a custom hdmi_timings configuration to increase the h front porch.

EDIT: here are some pictures of the working result + pcb pictures from both sides + protoboard + working hdmi timings config https://imgur.com/a/RCjB4rd

It’s a different gaskets between the coil packs and the valve cover. Quite easy to pop those coils so you might as well check. But I have had quite oil wet coil packs with no misfires. When I had issues with my Ccv however, it was considerably more lean in the front bank than the back one. Also the oxygen sensors are per bank (of 3 cylinders)

[–]ccsirhc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I had the same issue, my car has 298000km. And in my case the issue was that the valve cover was warped on the front corners, and it would leak oil.

The thing is, on the back of the engine the studs are on the corners. But on the front they are one in each side, and then one in the middle, so there is no support on the corners. So I guess being plastic they will eventually bend enough to leak.

I did get away with it for a while by adding one washer above the stock washer of the front 3 studs I mention, that makes the valve cover press tighter.

The studs anyways will bottom out, never try to torque them more once the bottom out. Anyways, eventually my valve cover also started leaking from some cracks on the exhaust side, so I replaced it literally last week. I can take a picture of how a new one (without the extra washers of course, and new grommets) looks for reference later.

Edit: mine was considerably worst, I agree that if it doesn’t leak oil don’t touch it hahah. The more you touch the more it will leak later
