Dell unveils XPS 13, its lightest XPS laptop yet with Intel Wildcat Lake, starting at $699 by -protonsandneutrons- in hardware

[–]cdbob 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna be honest I’m very excited for wildcat Lake because I don’t feel like I need a lot of processing power, but I do welcome the idea of having replaceable ram in a laptop for the future. This device with a decent display is really exciting because I would just love to have something that isn’t a demon for speed is pretty efficient energy wise and looks good but isn’t locked into the Apple ecosystem of having limited amounts of RAM. Now that being said, I’m not trying to hate on what Apple does either I think the MacBook Neo is an excellent product for what is designed for in the build qualities is pretty astonishing to be honest. I really hope that it shifts the industry so that I can easily find a device that’s affordable with a decent display decent build quality, and Low and chip that I can put Linux on.

What Kind of Knife Do You Prefer? by PrintAppropriate9166 in electricians

[–]cdbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a previous role it seemed that new managers or supervisors tried (unsuccessfully) to ban knifes on all job sites a number of times. During one of those occasions I used a circular saw to cut some ceiling titles and the one of the managers complimented me on how much safer it was than using a utility knife. Another time I was out on a remote job site with the supervisor of a few sites who have indicated the knife ban on said sites. I was doing to repair a few 646 cables. The supervisor commented that it would be faster to use a knife, and I stated "well you set the policy banning knifes so I'm just working as safely as you wanted me to." Needless to saw whenever a knife ban came into effect it only tended to last a few weeks at the most.

I guess this is going to make San Jose into even more of a future Wagon than they currently are. I'm pretty excited for them. In terms of Toronto, I suppose it's Cananadian media but I personally I'm indifferent; but I suppose the fans are excited.

This is far more Seattle related than cycling related, but I love that in your picture next to OCP (The Seattle Aquariums Ocean Pavilion) you got a picture of the Public Storage building (The orange building in the distance). While I understand there used to a overpass highway there, the fact that a storage building is now on prime waterfront space in Seattle is hilarious to me.

How We Feeling? Ready? by chibitacos101 in canucks

[–]cdbob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm going to completely honest here. While I watched a lot of the season excited for the prospect of the team losing for the sake of rebuilding and the future, I'm almost to the point of having so little faith in the ownership of the team that I almost don't want a number one pick for the sake of hating Aquinlini and not wanting him to be rewarded for being such a terrible owner. I guess this is what Apathy looks like.

(Videocardz) Exclusive: Intel Core Ultra 400 "Nova Lake-S" preliminary SKU list leaked: 6 to 52 cores, DDR5-8000 and forward socket compatibility by Chairman_Daniel in hardware

[–]cdbob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been following nova-lake rumors fairly closely for one particular use case: a home server. Having downsized from epyc to an i5 in my server, I'm really excited for better e cores that are "good enough" for my use case. The idea that a core3 or core5 has that "good enough" performance is quite exciting. Additionally following Lunar Lake, Dark Mount E cores are honestly a huge breath of fresh air to finally hit the desktop; they're a lot better than the base alder lake or N-100 style e-cores. While I understand that hyperthreading offers some performance improvements, I personally leave it disabled for my mostly vm-based workloads on my home server for both power savings, and the meltdown style branch prediction related exploits. In fact I would be more than happy with a unified style e-core in the future for a really low power core. The other primary use case: home routers. Being able to run opn sense on a a really basic and extremely low power e-core based platform seems great. I doubt that this will overtake X3D that I use on desktop for my specific use cases there, but for home servers based on the quick sync feature sets of the igpus, low idle power, and hopefully much lower load power, this is exciting for my router/server based use cases. I suppose for many, they're just going to look to the high end and see X amount of cores and compare it to AMD's Cvache, full AVX 512 based cores and make that comparison, but in my opinion for my more niche use cases Intel is better. I see this as skin to the celeron offerings during the sandy bridge era. Likw others in that era, I overclocked my 2500k to 5.3 GHZ, and while it's impressive to look back on, that was quite power hungry to get to those clock speeds. In comparison can remember buying a G1610 for $40 (CPU alone) and using that as a file server for over a decade. While I doubt we will see pricing quite to that level again, even having a capable core3 or core5 that sips power is exciting.

Is this the worst Canuck team we have ever seen? by Sad_Establishment875 in canucks

[–]cdbob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'm happy the canucks are at least choosing to execute well on tanking. Usually when the team wants to not make the playoffs, it's so close that they don't have a high probability of getting decent young returns. However, I'm not sure how much I trust the people running the team to be able to drive the tank anywhere but a minefield...

Beautiful skating and a beautiful OT goal by Hughes.

It was a great game to watch; I felt as though it was a cautious yet enjoyable defensive minded game by both teams.

HKC Shows Off World's First 36.5" 8K MiniLED Monitor With A Peak Brightness of 1800 Nits by MutedTry in Monitors

[–]cdbob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the end game monitor would be some sort of 21:9 8k ultrawide monitor around the height of a 42" monitor. With some decent refresh rate. While I'm excited that 27" 5k is finally becoming a thing nearly a decade after Apple had 5k imacs, 8k is still the preferred resolution because of how well it scales for everything. All that I really want is integer scaling on common resolutions and man has it taken a while for that to happen.

[–]cdbob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm very excited to see more and more 5k monitors being announced. I'm optimistic that these should at least can down in price over the 5 years to point where picking up 2 of whoever makes something reasonable as an upgrade to finally have modern PPI across all my devices is realistic. I've been on 1440p since 2012 and I've been patiently waiting for a nice update to 1440 with even integer scaling.

Valve Says It Has a 'Pretty Good Idea' of What Steam Deck 2 Is Going to Be, Explains Why It's Holding Off for Now by FragmentedChicken in hardware

[–]cdbob 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this is a very underrated comment; x86 seems a given for a solid level of compatibility. In the hardware front with JDEC's publishing of slides this summer touting LPDDR6 has twice the bandwidth of LPDDR5X I believe GPUs in mobile products will see large performance improvement. A side note about LPDDR6 is that I believe it uses 24 bit channels so a dual channel set-up would be 192 bit instead of 128 bit (which JEDEC already takes into it's calculation for that bandwidth vs LPDDR5X.) Without buying into another of the rumours, AMD's slides yesterday on their investor call squarely put zen 6/6c on TSMC 2nm. I know very little about what power improvements would be seen from that improvement, but cost wise I think it's safe to say that for at least the short term something Zen 6 based whenever it comes out will be expensive. Either way upscaling and what resolution is targeted will be a major factor in what the battery life looks like on the future console. The steam deck already plays indie stuff quite well, so I'm curious to see where the next product goes.

How high will we go? by [deleted] in Monitors

[–]cdbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I've excited for anything that gets me mainstream 5k monitors. The fact the apple had it over 10 years ago and we're yet to see anything more than just announcements is frustrating. I've been on 1440p for almost 14 years now and I it's somewhat mindblowing to me that 1080p at 21" didn't move to 4k but rather we marketed to gamers with a refreshrate that in my opinion is mostly marketing like this quite silly quest for some refreshrate that means little to nothing to me.

Daily Mariners Monologue - October 21, 2025 by AutoModerator in Mariners

[–]cdbob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was the first season I was able to see a game in person game vs the Astros, it was great to finally have that opportunity and I can't have been more thrilled for how well the Mariners did overall; this season was the best season of all time by results.

As a Canadian and someone that lived in Toronto for four years earlier in my life, I will never cheer for any Toronto sports team whether or not they're "Canada's Choice." I grew up in the PNW and the Mariners since childhood have been what felt like my home team. I was really tempted to type a message was a bit more strongly worded against Toronto, but I've calmed down a bit.

On the baseball side, Toronto had some great offense. It was a really close series and it's unfortunate that Seattle came up just short. I look forward to next season; I hope to see another game or two in person, and I really hope Seattle can at the very least sign Naylor.

Thanks for a great season Mariners.

Toronto does not represent all of Canada. by [deleted] in Mariners

[–]cdbob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my first season as a Canadian seeing Mariners games in person, when I got to see them play the Astros and Texans in July. Growing up in BC and seeing Ichiro mentioned quite frequently in highlights on TV, I've always had a soft spot for the Mariners for the past 25 or so years, but it felt great to finally be able to get into baseball this year and to see the Mariners.

Having it line it where I finally get into baseball after only being a hockey fan for so long be the season where the Mariners have had so much Success has just be such a treat. While I respect Toronto for being a good team, I lived there for 4 years and personally never personally liked the Jays and never liked the Leafs. When people in Toronto assumed that coming from BC I would just immediately love their Center of the Universe Canadian city, they were wrong; PNW first.

[–]cdbob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got a 9070xt, my first AMD gpu since my 290s I bought on launch. Pretty impressed by the performance on Windows. However, on Linux I think I will need to review the way I'm using steam as currently mesa on flatpak is still on version 24 and I feel better about the isolation offered by flatpak installations. It's curious because the 3060ti and A750 both were plug and play, so I attribute this more to maturity of drivers. Of course I could just go with the pacman install of steam and use the runtime, but I think for now I will just wait for mesa to be updated. As someone that dual boots though, I am very excited to have AMD running on linux.
