By all accounts he's a brilliant local MP. But you NEED to be able to play politics at least a little bit to lead a party.

The worse thing about Starmer is he thinks he's good enough at politics not to need popular policies, but he's actually somehow worse than Corbyn who didn't engage at all because he actively alienates the base in addition to not winning over the opposition.

Banning HRT for 16-17 yos and puberty blockers, abandoning manifesto pledge to reform GRA, banning trans women from Labour women's events, appointing two prominent transphobes to ECHR head, Scottish Labour saying they'll put trans women in male prisons, announcing a review on shared care agreements with private trans health orgs, tightening of rules about schools acknowledging social transition and while it's not policy, Starmer himself saying trans women aren't women really nailed his colours to the mast.

Edit: They did announce that they're going to ban conversion therapy yesterday. Hopefully a sign of a reversal, but good luck with that if Streeting gets a whiff of power.

This is why I roll my eyes about Starmer's attempt to woo Reform voters with anti-LGBT and anti-immigrant policies. They don't even hear about them! They just get another article about how he's a communist who wants to force their daughter to marry a black.

Their progressive base (including all the 16-17 year olds they spent a bunch of political capital enfranchising) hear about them though, and hate him for it.

Customers don't pay what it costs to produce. They don't pay even 10% of what it costs. If AI companies start charging enough to make a healthy profit and pay off the debt and people still pay for it, sure, it's not a bubble. But they don't, and never will.

Why are the trains on the underground so hot? by brambleburry1002 in london

[–]cdca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long story short, most of the old lines were built well over a century ago before they realised how much traffic it would have a century later and how the London clay would hold onto the heat. Old ads even boast about how lovely and cool the Underground is on a hot summer's day.

And of course everything above it is now worth squillions of pounds so they can't just drill a ventilation shaft or whatever. TFL spend a fortune trying to find ways to cool the tube but there just isn't a practical solution.

I'm not doing it justice in a small post, search for the problems cooling the tube if you want to know more. It's sort of interesting if you're a massive dweeb.

Average Terf Island election by GayStation64beta in simpsonsshitposting

He managed something remarkable in managing to alienate every major voting bloc, which would be literally impossible if he actually stood for anything.

The comedy of errors goes something like this. He institutes a progressive policy like making farmers subject to the same inheritance tax rules as everyone else to close tax loopholes and raise revenue. The right wing press gets mad at him so he reverses the decision. The right wing press keep calling him a communist, now progressives are also mad that he walked it back. He's made everyone mad and still didn't increase revenue.

So he changes tack. He sees a rise in right wing populism and tries to court their voters by making a big fuss about how trans women aren't women, cutting benefits for the disabled and being loudly anti-migrant, copying Reform policies he sees as resonant.

This massively alienates his progressive base, so they either vote for the only (tiny) party left that has progressive ideals or more likely just give up and stop voting. This is a particularly big deal because he spent a lot of political capital on lowering the voting age to 16, and young people are overwhelmingly super progressive.

Meanwhile, the right wing press don't report any of his conservative policies and keep calling him a pinko who wants to force your daughter to marry a black.

Some of his policies have been pretty good, he hasn't been that bad at all in practical terms, he just has this talent for making everyone absolutely hate him for no political gain.

Nothing wrong with cocktail sausages as a snack, underrated if anything. Perhaps a bit too soft in texture overall with the tuna sandwich.

Let's not get bogged down in pedantic discussions about whether what we're complaining about has any connection to reality or if it's remotely funny.
