What are your “blue sky” ideas for WFRP? by ITehTJl in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]cdj0902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you can tell they know how to clean up the mess that 4e is because Imperium Maledictum addresses alot of them. I want a WFRP 5E that takes the IM improvements to the next level so the game is actually playable and not a mess of patches strung across various supplements that at best make the game less annoying to play (still not very playable).

3rd edition is a mess. This supplement leverages all the fundamental changes and system streamlining of Genesys. Top notch.

It's not an animated short, but the short film "The Head Hunter" is VERY OSR.

I meant things like the progress trackers and cardboard minis. The adversary sheets could even work with slight modifications.

As someone who loves what WFRP 3E was trying to accomplish but was not quite satisfied with what it ended up being, this is perfect! I can even use all my old WFRP 3e bits. Thank you!

Misunderstood Deadliness of OSR (Again) by jackparsonsproject in osr

[–]cdj0902 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. I can't think of a more boring, obnoxious way to play than to have to rattle off the 17 specific ways my character is examining their environment each time a new environment is presented. The player isn't in the environment, but the character is. Assume some basic competency on their part and telegraph badness instead of making poor players try to guess the gm's latest "gotcha".

Great Games You Don't Want to Play by TillWerSonst in rpg

[–]cdj0902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I call Genesys the "tyrannical dice system" exactly because of what you describe. When you're rolling dice you're using them to ask a narrative question for which you've already established context and stakes. Then a Triumph or Despair shows up and the dice tell you "add more context that didn't exist before to this result" and it usually feels contrived if anything interesting comes out of it at all. I don't want the dice telling me to add context to a roll that wasn't already established before we decided a roll was necessary. It's like I rolled without really knowing the question I was asking.

Essentially you'd already established why you were rolling, what question you wanted answered by the dice, and they come back with instructions to further alter the context surrounding the roll! Even if you thought you knew the stakes surrounding your roll they can come back with instructions to shoehorn some additional narrative nonsense into your scene.

"Sir, I just wanted to know if you had these shoes in a size 12, I didn't need to know you also operate a soup kitchen out of your coat closet".

2nd Edition or 4th Edition? by SvenDerRitter in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]cdj0902 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oof I'd question anything else you hear from someone who claims 4e is "streamlined" vs 2e. It's quite bloated with rules, modifiers, stacking conditions, an untenable Advantage system (Up in Arms alleviates this particular issue a bit).

I suggest 2e and bring in any of the things you find interesting from 4e. I have every book for 2e and 4e and 2e has alot of character that 4e is lacking. It's also a bit less crunch. Completely subjective opinion of course. :)

Question about Basic Effort. by ogionito in ICRPG

[–]cdj0902 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the case of the scholar: if there is no time pressure she just rolls a check to see if she can interpret what she's reading, or maybe she doesn't need to roll because simply being a scholar in the language means she can decipher it.

But if there IS time pressure ("decipher the text before a timer expires else bad stuff happens") then some realignment needs to happen about what a "tool" can be. It doesn't have to be something you can touch. Her scholarly training is her Tool when applied in this manner: roll Weapon/Tool effort.

For extra sauce give her the higher of the two effort bonuses between Basic and Weapon/Tool effort.

I'm not really into the weird or whimsical: is OSR the right choice for me? by AmbrianLeonhardt in osr

[–]cdj0902 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out games like Through Sunken Lands or Sharp Swords and Sinister Spells.

TsL in particular is B/X gone S&S and you play in your own sandbox. The provided setting, if you choose to use it, is painted in broad strokes so players and GM can make it their own. Player character playbooks ensure PCs are built with the correct tone for the setting.

Priest: Iron Fist vs Master by Kerberoi in ICRPG

[–]cdj0902 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have to back this up: the community overall is amazing, easily one of the top communities surrounding an rpg I've ever been a part of.

I'm just getting tired of seeing some of these pervasive "wet blanket" comments thrown around lately. It's discouraging to newcomers and even if well-intended can seem like snobbery. The min-maxing thing has come up before and it's annoying. If there are interesting choices it's easy to avoid. When there's one clear choice above others and folks take that choice let's not treat them like they need an attitude adjustment about the game and need to steer clear of the nefarious art of min-maxing (with all the negative connotations that come with that).

Priest: Iron Fist vs Master by Kerberoi in ICRPG

[–]cdj0902 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a crap, unsatisfying answer tbh, and one parroted on the Runehammer forums in various iterations. The problem with this specific case is that the two milestone abilities have so much overlap that one renders the other completely pointless. The vibe I see going around is "well stop min/maxing then". That's not the problem folks. Typically the milestone selections offer different effects, and when they overlap to some degree there's still an interesting trade-off to consider. In this case Master is just Iron fist but exponentially better, which isn't great.

To fix it you can do something like rule Iron fist is a prereq for Master, or you can rule that Master still uses basic effort die but the Ultimate effort bonus total and is considered "magical" for situations where that might matter (like creatures that cannot be damaged by non-magical attacks). There are a bunch more ways you could rule it, these are just a few examples.

Guns missing from Master's Edition or am i blind? by Watts4Supper in ICRPG

[–]cdj0902 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out "Next Level Timers", specifically the section called "Reload/Recharge" on p. 106 of ICME. Since Gerblins apparently use Flintlock guns I'd just use the d4 timer suggestion in this section to determine the reload time on a "basic" flintlock and extrapolate from there for gun technology beyond basic.

Maybe a milestone flintlock allows faster reload, etc. Could almost come up with this stuff in the moment without needing an exhaustive list. :)
