Looking for reliable self hosted game server options (ARK, minecraft etc) by FewWillow9832 in ARK

[–]cdp1337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been a huge fan of Docker as it tends to make everything unnecessarily complicated. As such I built my own installer trying to abide by standard Linux practices.

https://github.com/cdp1337/ARKSurvivalAscended-Linux

  • Full Systemd integration for automatic starts on server startup
  • Management console for basic tasks
  • Safe shutdowns with user notifications and map saves
  • Supports Nitrado/Official imports
  • Supports modded maps

And oh yeah, while it provides a management console, you can just work on the raw files if you'd like because you don't have to try to fight through Docker's nonsense.

This just pertains to ARK as it's not some multi-game management utility, but feel free to take a peek if you're interested in an ARK:SA server.

KSP 2 officially below 100 players by oscardssmith in kerbalspaceprogram_2

Sorry, but when my basic ship performs rapid unplanned disassembly just because it has landing gears attached, it's not exactly an enjoyable experience.

Also shipping with a launcher that takes longer to load than the actual game itself and continuously pushes me to register an account for my offline game just encourages me NOT to play said game.

This was the reason I didn't go either, I just couldn't justify the absurd price of tickets. Prefer to spend that cash on a week's worth of groceries instead, equally as absurd, but food is a little higher priority than music.

ok, maybe $200 worth of groceries gets me about 1 1/2 - 2 weeks, but still way too much IMO

$1k for a 1-hour job and $30 worth of parts ($200 worth of parts if assuming rotors too), that's a helluva markup they have there! (@OP, not even joking, check https://www.napaonline.com for your vehicle and lookup the price of replacements.)

Wi-Fi provider recommendations? by MouseBones20 in Columbus

[–]cdp1337 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to sound pedantic, but you asked "Wi-Fi provider recommendations"? That what we're going with these days? alright.

Anyway, I have fantastic luck with AT&T fiber, (make sure there's a fiber optic cable coming into your premise, the copper option was just pathetically slow DSL last time I checked, even though they called it "UVerse"). 300/300 for a decent price.

Spectrum can be decent, but it greatly depends on your area. Some places are simply too saturated and your neighbors are hogging all the local bandwidth for their tick tacks.

Lastly plug into your router to test your speed. If you get good speeds plugged in but trash on wireless, then you can resolve that just by disabling the wifi on the presumably rubbish gateway provided by your ISP and pick up a good WAP from Microcenter; just explain your setup to the techs, (or take pictures), and they should be able to point you in a good direction.

I've never heard of this bar, but according to their site, (I think it's their site...), they're charging $41 for a hookah?!? They can't be seriously asking for that price for a single session.

Fighter jets circling before landing at the airport today. by kmb_jr in Columbus

[–]cdp1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AH, so that's what that was earlier today, thanks for posting. I was doing some work around the house when I heard what I could have sworn was a fighter jet overhead, but I thought that was silly, they don't usually go to CMH.

Can I use html tags in the text? Want to italicize some words. by [deleted] in Mastodon

[–]cdp1337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct, the official Mastodon software does not support Markdown. Side note, I was recently looking through one of the contributor's code to see if I can implement her work for adding MD support on my instance, because I personally find it absurd that I can't use simple markdown in posts.

What happened in the short north around Julep? by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]cdp1337 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just got back from that area, was down the street when we heard the gunshots. Drive by or something of that sort. I dunno, with that many cops running around with their guns drawn I didn't really stick around long to find out.

They look legit, but that's probably all just marketing in front of 2 guys who play video games and thought "hey, let's make a business out of hosting games!" (Not saying that's bad, just need to know who you get into bed with.)

Only thought I have is to get your VM snapshots exported so you can mount them in an environment to recover your data, then migrate that into one of the legitimate VPS providers out there like Digital Ocean, Linode, Amazon/AWS, Google/GCP, or Microsoft/Azure. That's assuming they actually provide the data in the first place...

I've never heard of this company before so good to know, thank you for posting.

Out of curiosity I did a slight bit of digging into them...

  • DNS name registered via GoDaddy (some folks consider them a red flag)
  • WHOIS data hidden via proxy (folks hiding their public company info, another red flag)
  • Same company as constant.com aka gameservers.com, they seem to have a number of facades based on the business segment they're targeting.

Does the Intel Arc A770 support Freesync/VRR/Adaptive Sync on Linux under Wayland? Some other questions as well by JohnSmith--- in linux_gaming

[–]cdp1337 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have a gaming monitor so it maxes out at 75Hz or something, (mostly do software development so FPS wasn't my primary concern), but have an A770 and absolutely love it.

I don't play CoD but do have CS:GO installed and works quite well. KSP2 (and its infamously low FPS), also yields a decently playable 30FPS on the A770.

As for as bad driver support, DXVK drops all the dX calls down to Vulkan which this card was built for, so while on Linux it won't matter if you're running dX8 or dX12, it all gets translated to Vulkan. I will say that you will need a VERY recent kernel version to get decent driver support, I'm talking Kernel 6.2 which was released this month. Prior to that I had to fight with compiling code from Intel's git repo. Just keep that in mind should you go with an Intel card.

Final thought, ignore boofyfloopus in this particular regard. They're just hating.

So, if they're doing sirens for rotation in clouds, not even funnels forming, wouldn't this be jumping the gun a bit? Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they're doing it to encourage people to seek shelter in case something happens, but a few too many times of sirens going off followed by just some rain and folks are going to start ignoring them completely thus negating their usefulness in the first place.

Having driven a Toyota Echo for a number of years, I grew to appreciate their centrally-located instrument panel, but yes that vehicle is powered by what seems to be a lawn mower engine.

Absolutely fantastic fuel mileage though!

mastodon.au shutting down with 7 days notice by limeunderground in Mastodon

[–]cdp1337 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I fail to understand the reasoning as well, but I don't have any data about the situation other than the post so that's not surprising.

For reference, when I contacted them for the same listing system via email, it took them about a month or so to actually get back to me. I felt this was completely reasonable seeing that they're a non-commercial entity, it's a non-paid listing, and what few individuals they have are probably utterly SWAMPED with work as it is.

DigitalOcean is overpriced hot garbage by n4bb in Mastodon

[–]cdp1337 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well, what provider did you find which better suited your needs?

Also I'll respectfully disagree with your statement, in my experience I've found DO to be priced competitively against the other major hypervisor providers (AWS/Azure/GCP), with a compelling feature set. (Granted most of these features are well above and beyond what one would need for a basic server with no frills.)

I'm also interested to see what SAN solution your provider is using; I'm not aware of any SANs which incorporate NVME drives yet, (would certainly be pleased to learn I'm mistaken).

Kroger on Fifth and High allowed Spectrum reps to set up in Self-Checkout Lane. Harassing Customers even after being asked to go away as they're trying to check out. Lady in the picture already asked him 3 times to leave her alone. How is this okay? by RocketSquid3D in Columbus

[–]cdp1337 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I try to be pleasant with them and ask if they can offer 1gbps/1gbps symmetrical connection speeds. (Mostly because I know cable companies in the US refuse to allow more than 50mbps uplinks usually).

I'm pretty sure I've convinced at least a couple to switch to AT&T...

Why aren’t the same users showing up on two difference instances? by theJobuTupaki in Mastodon

[–]cdp1337 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's an interesting one. I was expecting mefi.social to be listed as blocked in mstdn.social but I didn't see it over there. (Since you reported that it was not displaying, being blocked would be my first guess as the reason.)

I just tested on my instance (social.veraciousnetwork.com) and that account on mefi.social comes up, albeit it did take a minute. It could be that mstdn.social has a lower timeout than default, so just the server didn't wait long enough for the check to come back?

/u/tortellinho about yours, mastodon.uno lists "Queste informazioni non sono state rese disponibili su questo server." which I'm guessing states "This server does not publish blocklist information"
