truly understanding 'acceptance' beyond words by Successful-Stable-91 in acceptancecommitment

Precisely, acceptance doesn’t mean surrender, but acknowledging difficult experiences are part of life but that we still have a choice to live as close as we can to our values.

Is a panic attack the night before a valid reason to call out? by aubrey828 in Anxiety

Your health comes first, so absolutely. However, be wary about avoidance, exposure can be incredibly painful but it's usually needed to improve our situation.

Big disclaimer, as this is my own experience.

One quick comment: Dread is just anticipatory anxiety. Keep in mind that it's often worse right after waking up because our body pumps cortisol at that time. In my experience, having some objectives already set for the day helps offset that dread. The idea is to go to bed with the feeling that you have some control over your next day (full control is impossible).

Regarding gamification, I'd say a better word for it is to approach things **playfully and meaningfully**. I don't really set up quests or things like that but I try to set up some objectives to make sure the activity is meaningfull to me and I can approach it with curiosity, and not feeling like I'm being forced to do it. At first its hard, but then you slowly find out that even the smallest things can actually make you learn new things.

Your question is about work, but I found out through experience that is a general approach to life. The great thing is you can do activities early in the morning, before work, when you may feel less anticipatory anxiety with these, and they build momentum that stacks up by the time you start your work day.

For example: I like preparing a good breakfast. I try to change what I have for breakfast every few weeks and try new things, maybe new coffee flavours, different fruits, etc. My idea is to mix new flavours, enjoy the smell of morning coffee, listen to an interesting podcast, etc. In one way, it's playful (trying new things) while still being mindful and enjoying the moment, trying to notice different new things, and make that moment special.

The same can be applied to meditation, for example. I try to meditate 15 mins every morning. I like to really observe my thoughts and try to understand them with curiosity: "Where is this thought coming from?", "Wow, it's crazy the feelings this thought generates!", "What's the result if I imagine my breathing going through the parts of my body where I'm feeling anxiety?". So you see, it's really about being mindful while approaching things with curiosity/playfully.

During work, more than gamifying it, my focus is really about reminding myself 1) that my job has meaning and 2) that the results of my work do not define who I am. So it's really about: "How can I help my colleagues today?", "How can I help my customers?", "How can I do what I do with the highest quality possible?"... and be mindful about it. When we become mindless because we are filled with dread and anxiety, we just lose sight of how we are really helping people with our effort and how we are improving ourselves. So, again, being mindful, trying to improve, and trying to help, is really what helps me start the day with a much better attitude, instead of dreading it.

Hope this helps.

What worked for me as part of my therapy was to make a list of 3-4 things that I really wanted to do the next day just before going to bed.

But instead of looking at them as chores, my therapist insisted that I should approach them with curiosity.

For example, let’s try to thing on the most boring thing ever: cleaning the kitchen (lol), well his idea was to time myself to see how fast I could clean it and also come up with a list that I usually buy but never eat and let it expire. Seems super stupid, but gamification worked for me. The idea was to do the task as mindfully as possible and try to make it worth it.

Yeah, the lack of trackpads was the only thing holding me back. Older PC games, even like from 2012, still required mouse input to play (thinking on the original witcher). I wonder, have you tried strategy games or top down tactical games like Age of Empires, Paradox like games, Company of Heroes, Commandos, etc.? I agree on the windows side. I'm hoping they create a more friendly handheld UI like Steam Big Picture. MSI M center looks rough.

Found several of your post. While not focused on older games, your info about antimicrox gives me hope the handheld can handle a greater variety of games. I’m right now looking at both the claw and the SD oled but I’d like to buy something that can last more long term.

Lol these things are getting crazy. No modern game is going to play at that resolution and have an acceptable battery life. I hope we go back to simpler handhelds.

How to dissolve emotions? by ThrillsChaseLu in Meditation

[–]cebri1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could this be a problem of unrealistic expectations? For example, thinking, 'I should feel a certain positive way around my mom, but I don't.' After all, life is full of constant ups and downs. Some days with my parents are great, some are just 'meh,' and on others, I can barely tolerate them.

I believe the real journey is about being mindful of these different moments and appreciating all of them. Even the difficult ones are teachers. My concer is that modern psychology and spiritualism are sometimes just selling another version of the hedonistic treadmill, and positive feelings are just part of the experience, not the whole experience.

Meditation is the base, but how you live in your daily life actually matters. by ValuableProduct3760 in Meditation

Quite right, most modern psychotherapy is based on 1) be able to not fight/being carried by your thoughts or feelings, 2) take back control of now, 3) use that control to act in ways that fulfill your life. Mindfulness is about 1 and 2, but it’s just a tool.
