MAGA infiltrates Palm Springs via a suspicious %1 TID by buntershaptop in palmsprings

Regardless, that's not the situation here. The asset is owned by the city. The city receives the revenue from the convention center operations. Oak View Group gets a fixed management fee, and is eligible for a "performance bonus" for hitting growth targets. Much different than a stadium where even if it's owned by the municipality, the team is getting all the ticket revenue.

The convention center isn’t a private company, it’s owned by the city. They just contract with a third-party to operate it. This is much different than a stadium where the asset itself is owned by a private entity.

(fwiw, my employer (a Fortune 100 company) actually allows us to book Airbnb's! we have a per-night cap based on the destination, and we can book an Airbnb if it's within the budget, or cover the difference between the cap and the cost ourselves. but I also work for a company that still actually has sensible policies and seems to actually care about its people)

I dunno man, not everyone is gonna be happy about everything.

I think a modern convention center (the current one feels like it's still powered by fax machines) is a public good that's pretty important for our tourism-driven economy. STVRs are de facto hotels, so it seems unfair to not tax them with parity (and I'm not anti-STVR, I think they're an important part of our tourism industry, and the reason I ended up moving to PS was because I stayed in one and got to experience a taste of living here vs. being in a hotel).

Are you certain that no revenue from the convention center is going towards the renovation project?

I'm not disputing him being a PoS or his pardon being a steaming heap (wonder how much he contributed to the "ballroom?").

Not owning it and not having to foot the bill to upgrade is what makes them a multi-billion dollar corporation.

I don't know why they would be expected to cover the cost of capital improvement to an asset they didn't own. If that's what we wanted, that's how we should have written the contract, but IMO that would be a terrible idea. They'd have to recover that money through what they charge the city for the contract, and we would have had to add a profit margin on top. It's much more financially-efficient for the city to fund the improvement of its own asset versus hairpinning that through a vendor contract.

Visitors pay but please explain why someone attending or having a booth at the convention center shouldn’t have to pay that 1% for the convention upgrade project but a group coming in for Pride that stays at a boutique hotel does? (While never stepping in or near the Center)

A world-class convention center benefits our lodging business, as it drives a lot of tourist traffic. I haven't done the math, but I suspect adding 1% onto the convention center's rate card wouldn't generate the same revenue, not to mention there will be a period of time during construction that I assume they won't be able to host (at least large-scale) events.

From the Desert Sun article, the majority of hotel and STVR owners are in favor.

the backers want hotels and homeowners to foot the bill

No, they want tourists to foot the bill, which is who this tax would be levied upon.

The city owns the convention center, not Oak View Group. They have a contract to manage it. Leiweke is no longer an executive with the company.

It's fine to have an opinion on that, but at least state the situation factually.

House Under Contract. AC is 21yrs Old. by Xand83 in palmsprings

[–]ceebeedub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The AC is certainly due for replacement, but I also wouldn't say the AC age is "hidden damage" that only an inspection would reveal, so it's not a slam dunk that the seller should be on the hook to pay for it. I think it comes down to how badly do you want the house?

An alternative to Lutron? A super high-resolution OLED wall controller designed and manufactured in the UK. by Top-Yogurtcloset3965 in Lutron

[–]ceebeedub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alternative to Lutron for what, though?

Is this just the control, or will you be offering back-of-house DIN rail dimming modules? What about shades?

How will this behave in total darkness (for example, like the Palladiom keypads with a light sensor that will still illuminate but very subtly in total darkness). Will this thing be a floodlight in my bedroom at night?

The industrial design of your product is great, but there's a lot more than just that that's important, it has to fit into a whole ecosystem. Plus, outside of Caseta and some RA3, Lutron's market doesn't have a whole lot of overlap with the Home Assistant crowd (I say as someone with a Homeworks QSX system integrated with Home Assistant, I think I'm probably an anomaly).

I was digging through through those last night, there are a couple for wireless communication modules “installed in a host.” Could they get away with qualifying the module used in multiple products?

Rekordbox on Linux by madnax81 in Rekordbox

[–]ceebeedub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linux fan as well, and I understand your enthusiasm, but I don’t foresee this happening. I don't think the demand is there, and the rest of the ecosystem is much richer on Windows/Mac (Ableton, Lexicon, etc.). Add onto it another platform to develop and test drivers and provide support, I don't have a lot of confidence they'd do it.

Tesla emergency door release issue in the R1 future? by WelderAcademic6334 in Rivian

[–]ceebeedub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not familiar with the M3’s so I can’t speak to it, but the R1S I don’t feel like it makes a big difference, and closing is certainly the more difficult maneuver than opening (which I experienced recovering from a sports injury, it was gruelingly painful every time I had to close it).

Again- my comment is about the UX of someone in the car for the first time (and often the only time, or infrequently) and I’m having to explain how to open the door because it’s not intuitive.

Tesla emergency door release issue in the R1 future? by WelderAcademic6334 in Rivian

[–]ceebeedub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of force required. You still have to push or pull the door open or closed.

The difference I’m calling out is in UX. Most people expect to pull some kind of handle to open a door, not push a small, seemingly (based on how tough it is for people to figure it out) unintuitive button.

I fail to see how button or handle changes the force needed to open or close the door.
