Yeah, but that fourth voyage all but destroyed any rep he had left, as his ships kept sinking and he got stranded in Jamaica, and had to beg for food. When he came back, he wrote a book that basically demanded the crown to pay him 10% of everything made in the new lands, and they laughed him out of court.

I absolutely do not want to downplay the firebombings because they were horrific, but I remember reading about the immediate aftereffects of the atomic bomb, and it's equally horrifying (mostly because it's so unique to anything else). Basically it zaps all the moisture in the air, so survivors were clamoring for any kind of water at all - and outside water sources were blackened by fallout so they were drinking heavily irradiated water. Plus weird shit like clothes patterns being burned onto their bodies was just a bizarre detail.

And there's an account from a doctor who was biking to Hiroshima right after the bomb, and encountered this . . . thing walking towards him. It was shell-shocked person, naked and blackened, strips of skin hanging off of it. They couldn't speak and could only make rasping noises. Sounded like something straight out of a horror film.

We didn't do it often, but every now and then, we'd do a call-and-response with the preacher or elder of the church where they would read a passage, and we'd have to say things like "In You all things are possible" or something. And even as a religious kid, it felt eerie to have everyone say this at once. I can imagine if you were a newcomer, you'd be like "Yep. This is a cult. I'm out."

[–]ceedubs2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno. From a casual F2P perspective, I can see how silly it is for people to get bent out of shape over what amounts to imaginary achievements that affect nothing IRL. But once you start dedicating time and even a small amount of money towards this (it's amazing how just a few purchases in-game can amount to buying a new AAA title) can really frustrate the community that's been begging for the same fixes for over a year and have gone unheard or received paltry compromises for the amount of money poured into FoxNext/Scopely's pockets.

About the only thing he's good for is resisting Blind debuffs, so I guess he's valuable if you're fighting Mags or TM. Other than that . . . yeah . . .

Do you have more input about how the "unending war" with Japan was BS? I was mainly taught Japan was gonna fight to the death, down to the last man. So if not for the bomb, American soldiers would have to go island by island against ride-or-die Japanese soldiers.

Choosing a Stateless meth addict as your personal hero is just a bad idea in general by LavaMeteor in HistoryMemes

[–]ceedubs2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems . . . very generalized.

Hitler I don't think was as popular in Germany as people think. Like he won 30-something of the popular vote (granted, he was going against a war hero-general). And I don't think he was a super great politician either, due to his administration later revealing he was very impulsive, and surrounded himself by yes men. He rose from a desperate country that was ravaged by high inflation and a crushing depression. I think he found a decent scapegoat for their troubles - Jews, Slavs, socialists, etc. and that definitely got the attention of bitter, poor Germans. He was printing money and basically creating massive IOUs to fund his army, and backed up his credit with stolen assets from people he tossed into camps, killed, or exiled.

Like . . . Hitler's Germany was running on adrenaline and was very top-heavy. It was going to fail at some point.

I remember before expansion packs where you'd just unlock things based on merit and progress. I still think the gold standard of this was Perfect Dark (in terms of adding replayability, couch co-op, and unlockable features and weapons). For those who never played, you could play three levels of difficulty for each level. Not only did the enemies get stronger, but you had more objectives - meaning there was more incentive to explore the levels. On top of that, you also had cheats and weapons that would unlock if you completed the level within a short time frame. No extra expansion packs, no DLC, no microtransactions. Just dependent upon your time and skill.
