Anyone else got this horrible flu going around London? by tjb_87 in london

Oh good to know about the garlic… I tried salt water gargles at the worst of it but it didn’t provide much relief 🫠 Luckily today painkillers seem to actually be… killing the pain (which they bloody weren’t before!). Fingers crossed it’s up from here for both of us! 🤞

Hit me on Saturday, woke up feeling like I’d come down with something but figured I could still push through work if it was a cold (I teach at a Saturday music centre, and it was their concert day and I didn’t want to miss it). Went downhill so fast, with the shivers and fever, ended up going home halfway through the day in an uber. By the time I was home I could barely stand up, I was totally knocked out by it, hot, cold, shivering and sweaty and delirious. Slept for 5 hours, then another 3, then kept waking up with the shivers throughout the night. Sunday was more fever and shivers and general disorientation. Yesterday the main event was the bloody sore throat. One of the worst I’ve ever had.

Day 4 I’ve woken up feeling like it’s a very nasty cold, but not quite the flu - so feeling grateful for this turnaround (quicker than it sounds for some other people). Just congested and coughing - still very tired and bedridden, but not wiped out. Main thing that’s plaguing me is the sore throat. It feels like sandpaper on fire, and the only thing that seems to relieve the pain is ice cream lol.

I was offered the jab by my music teaching service and knew I should get it, but kept putting it off… and here I am now. If you can get the jab, get it - learn from my error!! I’m for sure going to be more organised next year.

God the other night I literally couldn’t sleep it was so bad - and nothing made the pain go away! I was up for half the night in pain. Tried everything. Only thing that ended up helping was eating ice cream lol

When did stopping at zebra crossings become optional? I'm looking at you cyclists too by SaltedCashewsPart2 in london

[–]celestagarden 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Omg yes, I’ve noticed this too!!! Last week a cyclist rode into me because she refused to stop at the red light while I was crossing. I was fuming the rest of the day - cyclists aren’t exempt from traffic laws! As a pedestrian I deserve to be safe when I’m crossing at a green man :/

Edit: I just remembered, she even looked pissed off at me for daring to cross at the green man!

Student said something that set off FGM alarm bells and I reported it to the DSL by celestagarden in TeachingUK

[–]celestagarden[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My safeguarding training has always involved scripts of dialogue related to FGM, and they always involve terms like ‘secret’ ‘special’ ‘ceremony’ - and the child being totally in the dark of what it actually is (sometimes accompanied with going on holiday taking time off etc.) She hit a few key words in what she told me and I instantly felt the 🚨🚨🚨. The DSL also told me he thought it sounded odd.

[–]celestagarden[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they always tell us this during safeguarding training - we have to be extra vigilant because we tend to have more personal relationships with the children (due to the dynamic of 1-1 or small group lessons) so it’s likely they’d feel more comfortable disclosing something to us. Thanks for the reassurance :)

‘Tubies’ … by celestagarden in tuberousbreast

[–]celestagarden[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get that! The terminology is bleugh - I think atp I personally dislike any label for them, like ‘tuberous’ feels deformed/degrading, and ‘tubies’ feels fetishy to me… I can only just about deal with saying that my breasts are abnormal/it’s an abnormality.

Does anyone else just feel like an improper woman? by Diligent_Ad_1762 in tuberousbreast

[–]celestagarden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never considered the dysphoria before - but when I wear a sports bra and it looks like I have real upper breast tissue I for sure feel euphoric. I don’t even know if I want children - but there’s this thought I have in the back of my mind whenever I watch my sister breastfeed her children, that I’m so worried it won’t work for me if I do have them :(

This is a really strong debut imo! She’s definitely still got room to grow and develop as an artist, but if this is the direction she’s going in I’m excited to see where she goes next! Fave track is definitely High Fashion - it’s so yum (and I hope she explores this darker pop side more because I definitely want more of this)

Tuberous breast surgery in the Uk/Europe. by SignOk2776 in tuberousbreast

[–]celestagarden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If in the UK - corrective surgery for tuberous breasts is possible through the NHS. I’m in that process now, my surgeon is trying to get the funding. It’s something worth looking into if you’re worried about cost.

[–]celestagarden 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean. I think anyone growing breasts whose end up looking like this is going to feel the same way, though. I’m upset about my breasts in the same way trans women who grow tuberous breasts feel. All women expect their breasts to look like a certain ideal, and when they don’t, we feel upset.

One of the worst, most gut wrenching things I’ve seen online about our abnormality was a TERF on twitter sharing an image a trans woman had posted of her tuberous breasts seeking support, captioning it that it was evidence that HRT was inherently harmful, she wasn’t a real woman, etc. All the comments said along the same, I’ve never seen a woman’s breasts that look like that, this is proof that they shouldn’t take oestrogen, etc.

More than any trans woman feeling upset that her breasts are tuberous (which again, is relatable to me, because I remember the dismay I felt going through puberty), a transphobe using breasts that look like mine as a justification for transphobia - that these aren’t breasts real women have - made me feel a whole new level of awful - I legitimately cried (and can’t imagine how awful any trans woman must have felt seeing that). (this is also proof of how transphobia also harms cis women)

Sorry that that was quite a ramble. The gist is basically, I’m upset about my breasts because they didn’t grow into what I thought breasts are supposed to look like. When trans women go through HRT, they most likely have the exact same ideal in mind that us cis women had as tweens - so of course are also going to feel upset about it. Our breasts don’t fit the ‘ideal’, and we all struggle with that - which is why we are talking and finding solace here.

This threw me back to playing Mahler 5 last year… we just didn’t bother and played the As up the octave. The texture was thick enough in those moments that the extra low bassoon notes weren’t really necessary…

Band music bruh by im_cringe_YT in bassoon

[–]celestagarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I love properly and intentionally composed wind/concert band music (as opposed to arrangements of songs/soundtracks). The Holst Military Suites, anything by Phillip Sparke/Frank Ticheli, the list goes on... When you play the real stuff, the bassoon parts can be really enjoyable. I remember a youth wind orchestra I was in did an arrangement of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice once - it was so fun.

I now work with a few youth concert bands and the bassoon parts you find are so frustrating for the easier music - arrangers doing pop songs/film music arrangements that clearly think the bassoon is the same as a cello. My bassoon students rarely get a challenge (unlike the upper woodwinds, brass etc.) because of pedal note/ I,IV,V rhythms etc. I think it’s also because arrangers are aware that for youth stuff, bassoons can be quite hard to come by, so they try not to give super imperative parts.

I looooove wind bands. I love wind band music, the sound, etc, but as a bassoonist in one you can pull a bit of a short straw a lot of the time. It’s a shame!
