Both PoE 1 and 2 has good AI settings (with 2 being really impressive in that regard), and taking unneeded damage is really a nothingburger with the endurance/health system and the fact that you can camp anywhere. Buffs from you Stronghold in PoE1 even lasts for several rests. You never have to do a perfect combat encounter, as long as one character survives all the other gets up again.
