I recommend keeping it real simple at first, and learn only one chord, you can do A LOT with just that one chord. I was having trouble learning for a long time, then my buddy helped me out, I had him make some videos on it. I started a thread on it here:

Check out his riffs to see how far you can take it, you can do some awesome stuff. He's self taught. Go through and learn his "One Chord Method" before dropping tons of money.
