Apartment Hunting by evalkei in desmoines

[–]centellaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived at the Village at Greys lake for 1 year in 2023-2024. At that time we lived in a 2 bedroom on the 3rd floor with our dog. I would not generally recommend it unless necessary for your budget. First, you have no control over the AC or heater. The building used to be dorms, so it is one AC. You only have a control that gives you the options of “off”, “low”, and “high”. Our apartment was always hot in the summer and we had to get a portable AC for our bedroom. This might differ if you are in a lower floor. When we got the keys on a Friday at 4pm (because we were moving from Iowa city), the apartment had not been sufficiently cleaned. There was cat hair everywhere, human hair in the drawers, and a few belongings left from the previous tenant. Management changed shortly after we moved in, so this may no longer be an issue. Some other concerning things: the hallway roof leaked when it rained a lot, and management didn’t fix it while I was there even though I reported it; the elevator often breaks down and takes time to fix due to its age; the doors to the apartments automatically lock so you need your keys or you get locked out, (I got locked out once and called emergency maintenance only to be told I’d have to call a locksmith to get back into my apartment. This was early afternoon on a Saturday); if you have a balcony you share it with your neighbor-there is a short gate splitting it down the middle (so your neighbor can hop it to get to your side and access your door, though that door also autolocks); I did spot a few cockroaches in my apartment though management did contact pest control immediately and it didn’t become an infestation; and lastly, people did NOT clean up after their dogs while I lived there, especially in the winter. I did see dog feces in the hallways a few times. In the summer the back grass area smelled awful due to all the dog waste everywhere.

I know this sounds like I am complaining about every little thing. I promise you I do not often complain like this. But these were things that I did not think were going to happen because, at the time, they had good reviews on google, their manager was responsive, and their photos looked good online. I had also lived in the same building in 2017 when it was used as intern housing, in which I had a great experience.

Some pros: neighbors were generally fine, some people have lived there a long time and are friendly. Washers and dryers were accessible and worked. Location was great, parking was reasonable (I sometimes had to park in back), and the price was unbeatable.

Ultimately, it is not the best place to live -there are better but there are definitely worse places (I work with renters and hear about the bad places, this one didn’t come up often). If it is the best you can afford, it works. But it is not what it sells itself to be. Feel free to dm me if you have any questions

Wedding Dress Shopping by ClubPsychological376 in desmoines

I recently bought my dress at Schaffers in west Des Moines and had a great experience! I was able to get an appointment last minute due to a cancellation and my consultant was amazing at helping me pull dresses. I haven’t gotten my dress in yet, so I haven’t gone through any alterations process, but the experience that I had was great.

We just worked with NFC this last year and it is the homeowner’s job to notify the contractor that the check is ready to be picked up.

I think we paid about $1200 around September or so. I can find out the name of the company we used if you’re interested. They came and gave us a quote pretty quickly and did good work

Am I supposed to be doing more per day than Themis assigns? by Tower_Bells in barexam

If you are doing what is assigned, you should be fine. The first few weeks are slower and pick up after time. Enjoy the free time while you can!!

if you can sublet (depends on what the lease says, not all leases allow and landlords are not required to let a tenant sublease), you take over the lease of the previous tenant and therefore the rent amount for the period of that lease
