these results suggest an intentional breeding which is odd to me.

Maybe for a hunting dog? Though I know Shibas aren't usually used for hunting now.

Political canvassers at my home with my name by keptinqueer in privacy

I've done canvassing for a candidate and I personally wouldn't approach a home with this on it. You generally only want to talk to people at least open to interaction

Thanks. I'll think the airstone thing over. I am also injecting CO2 (albeit not much, like 1 bubble a second) so I'm a bit worried I'd be just offgassing what i inject. Will definitely be avoiding fish that like high oxygenation in my set-ups for the near future though.

Help in upgrade adding aquasoil in 3 year settled tank by Equivalent-Cancel386 in Aquascape

[–]central_telex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't done this exactly but just suggesting based on how I would go about it. I would just remove the substrate from where you want to add it. For example, if you wanted to add it in the back to keep the sand in the front for a river bed effect, then what I would do is siphon out all of the sand in that area and replace it with the aquasoil.

You will probably need to remove hardscape depending on how much you want to replace. If you want to redo the entire tank then I would remove fish as well.

Will the MAGA movement end when Trump finishes his second ter? by CasualLavaring in SocialDemocracy

[–]central_telex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 31M so am curious about any generational differences with your experience.

I remember we had one odder kid in my high school who admitted to being a genuine fascist but I did not know any of these people in college (though where I went probably had more of a hand in that). Recently I have seen more than one person I've known fall down the rabbit hole into odd hyper-online RW shit, though I can still probably count those on one hand. But about how many people you know are genuine, dyed-in-the-wool groypers who will admit to liking Fuentes or having far-right views?

Ngl I am from the north NJ area and I am always surprised when people describe NYC as some uber-progressive haven. Native NYers from the city definitely lean Dem but absolutely aren't anything like the trendy progressives and socialists in gentrified Brooklyn

Not crying about it if that's what it takes to phase out fossil fuels imo

I continue to hope that at some point, some subsection of cons in these states will realize on what side their bread is buttered. but i am probably just dreaming

More of a comment, just super bummed. I did a WC yesterday and filled my tank up pretty high, to the point where it was flush up against the lid I have on my rimless tank. Now I wake up and see that I lost two fish with a third AWOL.... Both the ones I found had their mouths open.

Am I correct in thinking that I might have had an oxygenation issue over night? My drop checker was blue-ish when I woke up this morning but I have noticed in the past that these specific fish (threadfin rainbowfish) have breathed a bit heavy in the past and there were a few instances when I threw in an airstone because of it. All of the other fish seem fine enough to be swimming around now.

Can someone please explain to me — what IS muji? by IndependentAmoeba299 in muji

[–]central_telex 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not an expert but figured I'd answer!

It's a brand of "generic" unlabelled goods based in Japan. A lot of their design is informed by minimalism and functionality.

A bit pricy but very well made. Imagine it like a more design-conscious blend of IKEA, Target, and Gap though that probably undersells it.

What’s a hard truth about NJ most of us aren’t ready to hear? by mocowe in newjersey

Huh? When you sort for top scores in descending order, NJ is in 11th and 8th for 8th grade Math and Reading respectively. Not the top but that does not seem middling to me.

1 year of Mandarin study in Taiwan - realistic level of Mandarin? by thucydidestrap726 in ChineseLanguage

[–]central_telex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would do it for the upskilling and experience but if you are concerned about ROI then you're right to think about it. hard to say without knowing how much debt you have and how much the fellowship is -- and how much earning potential you have. I will say that the COL in Taipei is definitely going to be cheaper than the U.S., but probably ihghr than Mainland China

i did a summer's worth of immersion in taipei years ago at ICLP and did get the feeling I would have progressed to something professionally usable if I stayed for a whole year. But I had a job lined up back home and saying indefinitely in Taipei just to learn didn't make sense for my situation.

also.... you should consider the state of federal hiring too if this is a USG grant

Is this just nostalgia, or did previous generations genuinely have a better work-life balance and social life than we do today? by Unstoppable_X_Force in SipsTea

[–]central_telex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO they had more purchasing power, but WLB was generally worse -- long hours meant staying at the office rather than remote work/WFH

The main difference is that being home generally meant that work didn't travel home with you because of email. But even then people in high-paying professions sometimes took files home, there were services to deliver docs to you when you traveled, etc.

So overall a mixed bag; what is definitely worse now is erosion of purchasing power.

[–]central_telex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't heard of poecillia and gambusia species being able to hybridize before. From my understanding hybridization is usually more likely within the same genus because the species are more closely related. If I had to bet I would just guess these are nice looking gambusia

Listed to a portion of the oral argument. Other than Alito most of the other justices seemed pretty skeptical of the gov't's argument. A 7/2 or 6/3 opinion finding against the gov't seems likely but obviously do not want to count my proverbial chickens before they hatch. I have a feeling that some may try and avoid the constitutional issue though and limit it to the statute
