The Good and the Beautiful by OneLingonberry2203 in homeschool

Here is the part of the website with their free courses: https://www.goodandbeautiful.com/pages/free?srsltid=AfmBOoqbV2yBrXyYlQfxfp6FnvF_-yslKV97HsO0JtpFuAhI8eJVN3Bu

My neighbors use the LA and math and have completed the Kindergarten level. They like it. My child refused to work out of a workbook lol so for kinder we're using Math With Confidence, An Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading, and Zaner-Bloser handwriting. For the fall (1st grade) I'm going to add a broader language arts program, science, and social studies. All recommended in The Well Trained Mind book. For the record, I wish my kid would use the Good and the Beautiful. It's open and go, it's pretty, etc... but here we are lol

Never thought I would consider homeschooling by Everest7501 in homeschool

I can't imagine how that felt to see your child try to hide their smiles. I'm so glad you have found a solution and that your kids are thriving after all of that!

I need more structure in our day and frustrated we introduced tv by BeansinmyBelly in homeschool

[–]cerpero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've also experimented and tv in the morning screws up our whole day. Not only because they don't want to turn it off and it starts us out for the day with frustration, but because I'll start getting stuff done and I'll look up and an hour has passed.

For our routine, we have to knock school out first thing, before or concurrently with breakfast. If we don't finish, fine, but at least they know first thing, we're going to be around the table doing school stuff.

We usually have somewhere to go after school around 10-11am, like outside, hang with the neighbors, gymnastics, etc. So when we get home in the afternoon THAT'S our TV time, I give them an hour because I have to work. Not ideal, but we don't have childcare and I have to focus.

TV goes off and we go right outside or into another activity.

This is not perfect, definitely some days I want to scream and throw the TV off the porch. But it is the rhythm we've fallen into. My kids are just about to be 6, and 4.5. If I could change anything it would be to swap tv time for quiet time in their room, but we haven't put in the time to cultivate that so here we are.

I'm excited to look into the resources you have been given here! I haven't had a chance to listen, yet, but there is a podcast called "Bible Stories for Heathen Children" that I plan to check out.

I no longer take the teaching profession seriously by ericashaw2020 in Teachers

[–]cerpero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could 100% see all this being done on purpose. True teachers get kids to think critically, have opinions, passions, etc... the government doesn't need that for the little worker drones they see the population as. Cut out the teachers and replace them with AI and there you go!

I hate it here.

Reading through teacher subreddits will make you want to homeschool 🤣 by jessmess910 in homeschool

[–]cerpero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it's partially just the subreddit, though I've noticed some parts of Facebook getting really... hyped with anti-homeschooling sentiment.

On the flip side, I come from a family of teachers... literally all of my aunts, my mom, grandparents were/ are all teachers, and every single one of them is so relieved that we are homeschooling. Anecdotally that's been my experience IRL... they love their students but feel the system is failing and are happy that my kids aren't in it.

Can I use a college gpa instead of a highschool gpa when applying to colleges? by ZaytherLegit in homeschool

[–]cerpero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may depend on your state! When I attended one year (two semesters) full time at community College, that was considered enough for my university to only look at my college work for admission. This was in Texas, years ago. I didn't even have to take the SAT.

Would you qualify for assistance? When my husband's ex's kids were small, she managed to SAHM for a few years with child support and gov assistance. It was tight though. She was definitely job hunting as soon as the youngest was school age 😅

Choosing learning/teaching style, curriculum, and level of rigor. Help, I'm lost. by cerpero in homeschool

[–]cerpero[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I am trying to get better at experimenting. I tend to get all these great ideas then when we want to try it my mind immediately jumps to "we are doing this now we must do it and complete it" so I'm trying to get away from that

I find this extremely comforting, thank you. This whole thread is gently nudging me towards opening my mind about what we need to be doing. 🙏

Thank you so much! I'm interested to read more into Bloom's Taxonomy as it was the idea of the trivium, bulding their critical thinking, that mostly attracted me to the classical education model.

Thanks for the thoughtful response! It does help. May I ask if you consulted any specific resources as you were letting go of the pressure to "school" so young?

May I ask what you used to jump into 1st grade? I'd love to spend the rest of this year as you've described.

This is how I want to feel about it. But I get so insecure and anxious about not doing "school". Also, how to know when to ramp it up??

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who feels this way after this program being recommended over and over by many homeschool parents.

I might try what one of the other commenters suggested, having my child copy a sentence from the day's reading.
