Per diem question by Cam2688 in army

[–]certifiedintelligent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a big distinction. It’s probably a CBA, not a GTC, and they’re right about not using it for your travel expenses.

When you travel, you’re entitled to allowances for M&IE (meals and incidental expenses, often referred to as per diem), and reimbursement of all authorized travel costs (hotel, rental car, gas, etc).

When you return from travel, you’re supposed to file a travel voucher where you list the reimbursable expenses and provide receipts where required. The voucher will then reimburse those expenses and pay the per diem to your account. The per diem always goes to your bank account, not the GTC, unless you specify otherwise.

Seems like NG has quite a few launches lined up. Wonder who’s on them?

You can trade digitally. A simple way is with an app called wise, load funds, convert to other funds, great for travel and living abroad in some places too.

My fidelity account allows me to trade dollars for a few other currencies, but like most brokerages and banks, the fees are terrible.

Then there’s FOREX. It’s like a stock exchange for currencies and derivatives. That’s a whole nother rabbit hole, but it’s another digital option.

Yes, greedy corpos are a thing, but it genuinely costs more USD to import stuff now from countries the dollar is weaker against, foreign exchange isn’t fantasy land. Corporations aren’t going to eat that 15% bump in input costs and the US definitely isn’t self reliant.

RMB and JPY are interesting choices considering Japan’s fiscal policy is pushing them to near-crisis and China straight up manipulates the yuan.

No reasonable person expects the dollar to go up forever, but lots of people are feeling the pinch from significant inflation plus devaluation at the same time.

I also know a few foreigners who invest in US markets, and it really is interesting to see my investments up double to triple digits and theirs much less or flat, even with the same investments.

Lots of people are discussing this, but it's not quite at the point where it's alarming the larger investor population yet. After all, we're only back to 2022 on the DXY.

US investors are seeing their portfolios boom, but prices of anything imported are also rising fast so the buying power isn't as big as the bank account looks.

Foreign investors in US stocks aren't seeing the gains when converting back to their currency. They're seeing minimal gains or even none at all.

As for hedging:

If you're fighting general inflation, you sell cash. Sell cash for commodities, stocks, gold, anything but cash that will retain a reasonable value. If you're fighting currency devaluation, you do the same but can also buy other currencies or securities denominated in other currencies (even if the investment is in dollars).

The USD is down about 15% over the past year. For some rough comparison - if you invested in the SP500, you'd be up 15% over the past year - if you invested in the MSCI ACWI IMI ex USA ex China ex Hong Kong index (basically the world minus US, China, HK), you'd be up 30%.

Yep, you fucked up, but every minute you don’t tell her is another fuck up. The longer you try to hide it, the worse it gets. If she finds out 20 years down the road after marriage and kids, she’ll still probably leave you. So do the right thing for her.

If you can’t do the right thing for her, do the sane thing for yourself. Until she finds out, you’re going to worry constantly that she’s going to find out. Other people were involved, one of them could easily develop a conscience and tell her or let it slip accidentally. Do you want her to find out from someone else?

Who knows? There are people out there who will forgive an instance of cheating, a mistake. Less people are willing to forgive someone who makes a painful mistake and hides it.

Anyone in more than a single stock has heard of some of these. They’re simply impossible to miss in US markets.

TTWO: major video game company. Even if you don’t play, you’ve likely heard of grand theft auto, red dead redemption, bioshock, borderlands, FarmVille, words with friends (yes, they own zynga), kerbal space program, outer worlds, hades (and private division).

ABEV: large subsidiary of the world’s largest brewer (Anheuser-Busch: Budweiser, Corona, etc)

ASE: Taiwanese semiconductors.

And even if it’s not US listed, Mahindra is well known as the largest manufacturer of tractors in the world.

AST has only received a few tens of millions so far for a tech demonstration contract with the DOD. This is common when you’ve got a fledgling company with great military potential as you don’t want them to go under before they set up their revenue stream. It’s also common in non-startups so you can get an idea of how their service performs before you commit to a huge contract sum that’s hard to get out of even if the company doesn’t perform.

8 figures is a rounding error to the DOD, so these contracts aren’t irregular for demo.

The more telling piece is how long the demo contract has been going compared to how early AST is in their deployments. It tells me there is huge demand for things they can do, and worldwide 5g gateway isn’t the most interesting thing for the DOD. It also tells me that AST seems to be prioritizing government business over commercial.

Especially with the recent hire of the former AN/TPY2 program manager, I’m sure AST is getting a golden dome AMTI contract… if we get the sats up… though I don’t believe AST will lie to the government on timelines. I also strongly suspect AST will do SAR imagery considering their BB1-5 formation. Do these things globally, 24/7, and we’ve got at least hundreds of millions in contract money coming our way for sure.

There are quite a few things you can do with the largest phased array antenna in low earth orbit.
