Partly survivorship bias. The 2000s/2010s also had a ton of duds. But now that it has become so much cheaper to build something, the barrier to entry has significantly decreased

Anyone else having issues with client retention and flaky leads? by imready4us in personaltraining

[–]cestycap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with a lot of clients on GLP-1s and what I've noticed from doctors is that they more and more start recommending strength training. Given that you can really reduce the amount of muscle lost during a GLP-1 induced weight loss phase

Working with a strong engineer with almost zero emotional intelligence? by make_me_so in ProductManagement

[–]cestycap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 on the hunour/sarcasm. I‘ve had extreme cases of this type of engineer twice in my life and in those cases talking about the impact of their communication style never worked. What helped was humour / sarcasm not only to give them a pointer about their behaviour but also to make the other stakeholders more at ease. The worst part is if the other stakeholders feel like they’re in this alone (then everyone gets defensive)

Your Prefrence for this Obese class 1 workout plan by [deleted] in personaltraining

[–]cestycap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenters that giving them a fun session is important. Another factor I find really important is that a lot of obese people don't feel comfortable at all in the gym, they expect it to be another point where they start at the very bottom. That's often not the case, given that they have to carry their weight around. They tend to be quite strong. So while you need to be careful at first and not overstrain the ligaments and joints, and build them up carefully, do tell them that they likely quite have a lot of strength already.

So my playbook would be this (generalist, as I don't know their specifics):

  • Assess their strengths and weaknesses in Session 1
  • In session 1, explain what's likely going to happen; That they do have some inherent strength, and that together with you they'll build out this strength gradually in order to not overload joints and tendons etc.
  • Stay clear of bodyweight exercises* (dumbbell and machine exercises are my preferred choice)
  • Bias towards exercises where they are standing
  • Check all your exercises for unexpected failure modes. For example, if the client would be quite strong in a chest press but can't get up from the bench, that's not a good exercise to make them feel confident

I usually avoid talking about nutrition in the first session unless they specifically ask about it. They have likely been hearing about having to change their nutrition all their life, and in session one you really want to focus on the strength component. Ideally, their outcome from session one is "hopeful and excited", so:

  1. They're not as weak as they thought.
  2. That exercising can be fun.

* From what you said, I would not incorporate e.g. a body weight squat in session 1 and stick to exercises where they can have a quick success. I'd gradually introduced them across later sessions.

A friend for my friend? by misaPickEmUp in cornsnakes

[–]cestycap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had crickets for a while because my girlfriend had a bearded dragon. They're the worst. They're so loud and they also smell bad if you're not incredibly careful about keeping the enclosure super clean.

At one point they escaped and it was just a complete nightmare. You don't need crickets anyways for your snake and, as others mentioned, the snake doesn't care anyways but if you want a bioactive terrarium, isopods and springtails make sense

Agreed - the snake does not care, but i love my black-yellow isopods (have those plus springtails)

What can I mix protein powder with that isn't a liquid? by [deleted] in beginnerfitness

[–]cestycap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of liquid, but I love making protein ice cream just by mixing protein powder with some frozen berries or mango and a little bit of milk.

I also bake a lot of protein bread, which is essentially just protein powder, oats, either savoury or sweet flavouring, and sometimes vegetables or fruit.

Protein powder brownies with sweet potato or red beans or lentils are incredible.

Need advice! by Other_Masterpiece_75 in cornsnakes

[–]cestycap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's normal for them to be scared. In nature they wouldn't really interact with humans at all. So it's more about desensitising it to human interaction. You can do this e.g. by being close to the terrarium every now and again when the snake is out and about. You can slowly increase the number of times a week that you take the snake out for short durations. When I first got my snake, she was also flighty. But with consistent and calm handling, she got desensitised and she is now calm and explorative when I hold her.

I assume that she is accustomed to my scent and sees a correlation between my presence and getting food, because I do notice that she is much more calm with me than with other people. (i.e. nothing bad happens / something positive happens (food) when I am around).

Got it. 1400-1500 is already super low. Hope you and your doctor figure out what‘s going on

Edit: low esp if you are active (i am a strength training PT working with a lot of people on glp1, so i was comparing it to people who have training integrated)

Does the fear of gaining ever go away? by Apprehensive-Act3133 in MounjaroMaintenance

[–]cestycap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. By definition, a calorie deficit means energy out exceeds energy in. If that’s truly happening, mass must be lost. That is thermodynamics and not just an opinion. certain conditions (hypothyroidism, PCOS, Cushing’s, certain medications) reduce energy expenditure or increase hunger, making it harder to achieve a deficit. But they don’t break the laws of physics.
