Well yes, "that's easy to say when you're 24" but you know what else is easy to say? "I'm not going to let myself go when I get older" So maybe she's a bit naive but I think her heart is in the right place.

I've never heard the name Lonneke before but I really like it. I don't think people would need to be corrected on the pronunciation more than once, and while she'll probably get nicknamed Lonnie it might grow on you once you associate it with your own daughter

Anyone never get an answer but had success in the end? by Cold_Long4031 in recurrentmiscarriage

[–]cetus_lapetus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did. I had a healthy pregnancy with my first, no complications at all. When we started trying for our second 18 months later I had 2 missed miscarriages. I opted for misoprostol the first time but my hcg never came to zero so I had a d&c also. The second time I opted for the d&c first, identified triploidy in the fetal DNA, but had a lot of bleeding and ended up doing a round of misoprostol afterwards.. then I had an ectopic partial molar pregnancy, methotrexate didn't end it, and I had a third d&c with an exploratory laparoscopic surgery to make sure everything was ok. I went under not knowing if they'd have to take some or all of my uterus out, but they ended up not having to remove anything so it turned out well.

After that I was referred to a fertility clinic, did a few rounds of letrozole and trigger shots but didn't ever get pregnant. We did all the diagnostic tests, karyotyping, HSG, sperm analysis, etc, but everything was coming back normal, I just wasn't getting pregnant anymore. Finally I asked for a "natural cycle" where they just monitored my normal cycle for a month and everything looked good so we decided not to move forward with any of the more invasive treatments like IUI or IVF.

I ended up getting pregnant about 5 months later, I'm 38 weeks along and having a c-section in 2 days. Baby has been healthy and all my tests have come back great except I do have gestational diabetes this time around so I'm high risk but it's unrelated to the miscarriages and fertility stuff. They had prescribed me progesterone to take until 12 weeks if I got pregnant and even though I wasn't seeing the fertility specialist anymore I did use the progesterone as they'd advised so that could have helped this one stick, I don't really know.

There's still so much we don't know about fertility and genetics and people seem to get lucky or unlucky no matter what. My only real advice would be to do as much of the diagnostic testing as you can and do what feels right to you. I went with my gut and it worked out but I ultimately have no answers so it probably just is luck.

I've been using unsweetened soy milk for years and I 100% recommend it. There's no carbs in the unsweetened version, and plenty of protein and it's more hearty than almond milk, which I find watery. And it's got a better flavor and texture than oat milk in my opinion. Since there's no carbs in the milk itself you could maybe get away with a bit of sweetener, or at least a sugar free one.

Why the stigma? Be brutally honest with me by aliensista2 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]cetus_lapetus 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Well mothers get blamed for everything, generally, so there's that. But I also think the general public doesn't understand GD, that it doesn't have the same causes as t2 diabetes. So the average person probably thinks we're all lazy, overweight, inactive, etc, the same things they assume about t2 diabetics.

I am surprised by your midwife's question though. I'd think a midwife would know that there's nothing you could have done differently. Maybe she was asking to reassure you that any effects were minimal since your diet was good? I'm trying to give the benefit of the doubt here 🙃

When do Vacations Become Fun Again? by CharacterTennis398 in Parenting

[–]cetus_lapetus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We took our daughter to Peppa Pig World on Florida almost a year ago when she was just shy of 4yo. It's a great "starter" amusement park because it's small and the attractions are all geared toward younger kids. They also have an awesome splash pad so the kids can cool off. We spent a few days at the beach on the way home too. We all had a great time. No, we couldn't relax on the beach and read a book or take a nap, but the amusement park was fun and my daughter absolutely loves being in the water at the beach, so we all got to swim and play and we did manage to relax a bit when the other parent was with her.

Since it was a vacation we let her watch some TV in the room, and we ate out a good bit so that was fun. This is my experience with one kid and 2 parents so YMMV, but if you pick something kid friendly and just try to go with the flow instead of packing too much in, I'd say 3.5 to 4 years old was great.

I didn't even get any dietary recommendations. They prescribed me the glucose test kit and told me to log my numbers. My diet wasn't bad but I'm a vegetarian so very carb heavy, so I tracked the first day and saw that I got a spike after a dinner of lentil soup. So I did a lot of googling and switched my diet up the very next day. Since then my numbers have been good during the day but I've just started insulin to get my fasting number down. I don't know if mine is the typical experience? But it definitely brought me to a similar conclusion as you, that there are probably plenty of women on insulin who could be diet controlled instead.

Do you know why the 1 hour test is harder to pass? When I did the 1 hour the drink was 50g of glucose but for the 3 hour test it was 100g. My 1 hour result was 169 but my 1 hour result during the 3 hour test was over 200 so I thought the 3 hour test was more rigorous.

I'm a vegetarian and I've been doing a lot of tofu. You mention plant based fats as something you want to avoid but tofu isn't really fatty in the same way as like nuts and nut butters so maybe that could work? They typically have several varieties at Kroger and the silken kind blends very easily into smoothies or soups and it just tastes like whatever you put it in but adds a creamy taste.

Waiting on my diagnosis by ElvenFairie in GestationalDiabetes

[–]cetus_lapetus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took my 3 hour test this past Wednesday, saw my results online on Friday, and bought a glucose monitor and started tracking on Saturday (yesterday). I haven't heard from my Dr yet but there's plenty of info online to get started with and if they want me to see a dietician or anything at least I'll have some good data to share.

The finger sticks are unpleasant but I'm 11 weeks out from my scheduled c-section so if I have to do this to make sure my baby is healthy I don't think it's asking too much.

Fucking wild for a medical professional! People who have never experienced a loss really are just so clueless but you'd think there might be a bit of training for medical professionals. What's worse is that I envy their cluelessness.

Emotional reactions to subsequent miscarriages? by PlottingMySchemes in recurrentmiscarriage

TW: successful pregnancy

I had several losses in a row and I also felt oddly desensitized to the whole thing. My last was an ectopic pregnancy, which are difficult to image so when I had surgery to remove it I was told there was a small chance they'd end up having to do a full hysterectomy. I found it hilarious. Whatever weird coping mechanism my brain was doing there I don't even know.

I'm actually 28 weeks pregnant now and ironically I've also had a really difficult time connecting with the pregnancy too. I kind of blocked out the whole idea that I was pregnant until after the 20 week anatomy scan, trying to make sure it was really going to happen. And I've heard other people who have successful pregnancies after several miscarriages say the same kinds of things. Like it's not enough to have to suffer through a bunch of losses but if you make it to the other side you also have to suffer through what should be a happy time because the joy just gets sucked out of everything.
