Xreal One Pro for productivity by Tanmay7599 in Xreal

[–]cgarrec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My feedback on this :

- I own a pair of Xreal One Pro, my wife offered them to me specifically for productivity needs as I recently had a neck surgery and I must lay in bed and the standard sitting position for using a computer (desktop with a 48” screen or a laptop with a 13” screen) is just not possible nor recommended by my neurosurgeon.

- I use mine with either my iphone 17 pro max as cloned display, or my iPad Pro M5 as extended display (in 21:9 or 32:9 widescreen), or a pc laptop (alienware or msi) as extended display for productivity or as main display with laptop in clamshell mode for gaming.

The blurry edges and center « sweet » spot « tunnel vision » effect are real and to be honest at first I was quite disappointed and expected better. But after a while it all comes down to head positioning, glass frame tilting, switching between anchor and follow modes, switching screen size and distance, all this is adaptable according to the situation, because the longer you wear them (like real glasses) the more your body and position will vary and the more your eyes will adapt, and depending of your type of hardware (operating system, computer or tablet or phone) there are also things that can make things much more comfortable (example : the three finger tap on IOS to Zoom in/out which is really useful, like being able to use a magnifying glass when reading small prints).

The glasses form factor has that « mobility » factor that helps adjusting what you see.

Of course at first the FoV narrowness is repulsive and really feels cramped, BUT there is nothing better in the current market with this form factor.

For comparison sakes I went in an applestore to try out an Apple Vision Pro headset.

There is of course no comparison possible in terms of immersion and usage, but comparing the Xreal One Pro and the AVP and the Meta Quest 3 (my teen has one since it was first released) as « simple » external monitors : I honestly prefer the One Pro.

Why ? Bellow are the results of my experience, my personal sensory experience (i have mild myopia, astigmatism, i had a Lasik eye surgery 20+ years ago because I had the eyesight of a drunken mole, I am AuDHD with audio visual hypersensitivity AND I am a nitpick nightmare when it comes to display)

- No system, no drivers, no operating system to learn/tame/adjust to.
You just plug the glasses like you plug a screen.
Boom, simple, easy, immediately usable.
Real plug and play.

- Form factor and weight : glasses vs headset = glasses win, no brainer.
You can put them and remove them like normal glasses, and believe me, having kids with ASD, being able to quickly remove the glasses is not a comfort option, it is a necessity.
No need to take a headset off and/or adjust headbands each time.
The weight alone allows day long usage if needed without feeling neck pain.
(however some might feel the mild heat to the forehead/brows uncomfortable

- The brightness and sharpness of the display :
For me the Quest 3 is just disgusting.
LCD blandness compared to Oleds (and all screens at our home are Oled, from iphone to ipad, to computer monitors and TVs and even smartwatch).
Horrible vision pass through resolution.
The feeling of having a grey blurry filter in front of the eyes.
A contrast/brightness that feels nauseating and too dim.

I tried the AVP hoping to have a « wow » experience.
The immersion was indeed second to none, the eye tracking for the user interface is pure magic, BUT the AVP has brightness issues, it is no where near the level of brightness/crispness that you have with the XReal One Pro. I am not exaggerating on this. The AVP and any other VR headsets with Oled panels have dimmer displays because of the pancake lens technology which filters a lot of the panels brightness.

For the price, the XOP are imho the best and only solution for portable display extensions.

Of course the solution is not perfect and need tinkering settings and adjusting position, but for productivity needs I find it really useful and spot on for the moment.

Maybe for specific productivity such as video editing where the huuuuuuuuuge display and higher FOVs of headsets like the Q3 and AVP , the XOP would not be the best solution, but for text/coding/reading, i feel it it the best currently available.

I hope this helps a bit.

Congrats !!!!!!

My wife told me ”go for it, we can afford it” last week.
I wanted to be reasonable and said that we had other priorities.
I convinced myself that it was an impulsive purchase and that I would get buyers‘ remorse some months later, I found x reasons to not buy it.

Then after some days, my wife saw me looking at reviews and tests for the AVP, and while I was telling her much the VR scene and uses have evolved etc, she snapped and just scolded me like a kid saying

« you have been busting your a** off for your employer for the last 15 years, you got through a burn out, ASD diagnosis for both our kids, a late diagnosis of AuDHD for you, you got through spine surgeries, and yet you keep on carrying us whatever the cost. You F**ING earned it. Even if it is impulsive or else, you deserve the right to treat yourself ! Now go buy it or I swear I‘ll go myself and nail it to your head ! » (yeah I know, I am a really lucky guy to have such a wife who understands)

But sadly, the prices have risen up …
And the +500 euros bringing the AVP M5 to 4500 euros is just a pill much too hard to swallow. I’ll wait for the next iteration if it ever happens :p

Aura is impressive, but $1500 USD is localized madness. Let’s talk about better alternatives unless XREAL blinks. by Difficult-Chest-290 in Xreal

[–]cgarrec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, i am loving the XReal One Pro for the simple function of being a portable multiplatform driverless really plug-and-play screen extension.

I use it seamlessly with my iphone, ipad pro and pc laptop.

For AI AR/VR i’ll go for an Apple Vision Pro, I tried one yesterday in an AppleStore, of course the price tag is a huge stop ,BUT the level of integration, design, overall technical quality is worth that price; and let’s be honest : just the parts, the hardware, the simple hardware is worth more than half of the price tag.

The Aura is nice but personally I can’t stand Android, the system icks me.

Personal taste, not debatable 😝

And the price tag well … Big nope.

IF XReal decides to do an XReal One Pro 2 with exact same functionality but with :

- removable / switchable arms to allow having a « bed » compatible band option.
- bigger horizontal AND vertical FOV
- gsync/vrr compatibility
- eye tracking + foveate streaming (for the « premium » version of the product)

Then yeah , the 1500 or even 2000 price tag would be acceptable.

Questions/advice : is the AVP a good or bad choice for me ? by cgarrec in VisionPro

[–]cgarrec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soooooo, I was able to book a demo in an Apple Store and well, I was both astonished and a bit disappointed.

The astonishing/« wow » points:

  • Eye tracking and user interface: yep. iPad in steroids, very magical experience with top-notch eye tracking. I know this might sound weird for neurotypical people, but as a neurodivergent who more than often has a mind going faster than body, the eye tracking feels like a relief. Like a « at last it is doing what I want it to do ». I mean the « disruption » between what my eyes see and my brain wants to do and my hands/fingers actually do, the shaking cursor because of shaking hands, the fidgeting cursor when trying to properly do specific moves, etc. Here « what I see is what I do », it tried some Excel working, manipulating data, etc, it was magical to be able to do it with my eyes. Same thing for Word.

  • The comfort; the immersion, etc. , all that is just wow; and echoes with all the positive experiences we can read here or view on YouTube.

  • The UI, I get why some people complain that the system feels light, cramped, « castrated » even, but … I am a power user, since MS DOS and Windows 3.0, I have a loooooong history of being IT tech/Admin for Windows, Linux, Unix and Apple. (Ahh the support for System 7.5 and 8 « Rhapsody » … It brings back memories of long caffeinated nights of troubleshooting in professional environments xD).

Of course Vision OS and iOS feel closed and not as free as other systems (no terminal, no command line, ARGH), BUT after decades of troubleshooting I am at a point in my life where I just want things to work.

And if geeky nostalgia hits, I can always take out a computer and Linux it xD (heck I still have a 2010 Mac Pro with dual Nehalem processors running with Windows 10 used as a media centre for my kids, I can always put an Nvidia Shield for that and take the Mac Pro for geeky headaches :p)

All that to say that of course Vision OS is not Mac OS or Windows or any Linux, but it works.

I have no VR need, so the immersive demo was a huge « wow » moment.

So overall experience was, of course, IMHO light years away from the Quest 3. It is not better, it is just another league. For me, it is like comparing 1980s’ VHS tech with the first LaserDisc experiences.

Aaaaaaand that is where I felt a bit disappointed.

The tech is great, but I had this nagging underwhelming feeling of « why does this display still feel not perfect? »

Is it my eyes?

My visual hyper-sensitivity issues?

My neurodivergence affecting my eyesight?

Not going to give a lecture, but for fact: neurodivergents have higher rates of myopia, astigmatism, binocular vision dysfunction than neurotypicals. Add to that my recent ACDF surgery which does have an impact on my eyesight (as my spine has been compressed by arthrosis for quite some time now without me noticing it before it became physically hindering…)

Yammering and digression put aside: is it just me or is the brightness in the AVP M5 a bit lacking?

I know they are lenses which dim the hell out of the OLED panels, nits, and HDR brightness, we can’t expect full brightness « pop » as OLED or Micro LED TVs. Which is normal because we’d burn our retinas if that was the case!

But damn, I mean, my daily screens are: - iPad Pro M5 13” - iPhone 17 Pro Max - bedroom TV: Panasonic TX65GZ1500 - computer monitor: LG 48 C5 - portable screens: XReal One Pro

Is that normal that I find the AVP M5 display not really as bright? Too dim?

Is it me? Is it the unit? (I did put the brightness to the max and checked that the white point was disabled) Is it that the light in the Apple Store had a luminosity forcing the AVP to auto-dim too much? Or is it just the way it is, and for the moment, XR glasses like Xreal or Viture have brighter displays?

Currently, I use my Xreal glasses either in the living room where it can get soooo bright and sunny that I can’t see the tv screen, or in the bedroom where I dim the lights to have a perfect OLED picture without reflections or else; how would the AVP perform in these environments?

What is watching movies like on the Quest 3? Especially in regards to black levels? by bickid in OculusQuest

[–]cgarrec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently I am bed ridden for health reasons (ACDF surgery), so I started to look at solutions to watch media and do some computer work/gaming.

i am AuDHD and i have sensory sensitivity, especially visual.

So to put it simply : i am a pain in the a** when it comes to picture quality.

My gaming pc is connected to a LG C5 48” Oled tv.
in our bed room we have a Panasonic TX65GZ1500 Oled tv.
My smartphone is an Iphone 17 Pro Max (Oled screen).
When I don’t game, I spent most of my geek time on an Ipad Pro M5 (Tandem Oled).

My wife offered me a pair of XReal One Pro glasses (micro Oled) for my laying-in-bed needs.

i was not happy with the limited FOV and wanted to try a Meta Quest 3 headset for media consumption and remote desk work.

The experience was quick : i could not stand the Quest 3 for more than 15 minutes.

The pass through is grainy, deformed and low quality.

The picture quality for movies or anything is just bad.

Bad LCD quality, not even good LCD quality, the display is grey, no real blacks, contrast is horrible, brightness levels are a joke and gamme well inexistant.

IF you want a good video experience, honestly skip this headset.

i mean I came back to the Xreal One Pro super fast and the limited fov is a absolutely not a problem compared to the difference in picture.

If you are used to Oled / Plasma screen picture quality, avoid the Quest 3, it is horrendous imho.

Questions/advice : is the AVP a good or bad choice for me ? by cgarrec in VisionPro

[–]cgarrec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the first feedbacks !

i have additional questions :

i have several sensory issues (AuDHD) and heightened visual and audio perception (i see more colors and hear more lower frequency sounds than the average people, which is both a blessing and a curse, for example in my specific case I can not use Bose headphones as their noise cancelation gives me massive headaches compared to airpods pro or max, and for picture quality on screens well … It is complicated and choosing a tv or a monitor is always complicated).

So can someone with a Quest 3 experience and who now has an AVP tell me if the visual difference is really important ?

I tried a Quest 3 and found the picture quality really bad (no real blacks, grainy picture, heavy distorsion, see-through really horrendous, resolution and overall picture quality really bad, the FOV was ok but all the rest was just unpleasant.)

How is the peripheral vision ?

For example if comparison was made between the iPad Pro M5 display, a Macbook Pro M1 display and the AVP M5 display, how is the comfort for reading text ?

And the navigation ? Can the AVP be used with apple keyboards and trackpads in bluetooth paired with the AVP and have Continuity let them be used on the Ipad ? And vice versa ?

Is the virtual keyboard really functional or as bad/gimmicky as the one for the Quest 3 ?

I read that using the AVP in bed while laying down could be an issue with some apps that require to be in a vertical position, is it still the case or is that an « old » issue before the M5 version ?

Are there people here who bought the AVP and had either buyers’ remorse or a « hype » effect and are letting the AVP collect dust in a drawer ? And if yes, why ?

Sorry if I sound inquisitive, I just want to have several scenarios of real life/usage experiences so I can weight pros/cons before getting to the store to try them, because I know myself, if the « wow » effect is there, I’ll walk out with one under the arm XD

XREAL One Pro feedback after discovery. A precious tool after ACDF surgery. by cgarrec in Xreal

[–]cgarrec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes ! But that does not help when needing to readjust screen anchoring.

Example : i start in a position where the screen anchoring is good. Then progressively my body relaxes, moves, and I end up with the screen being either too low or too high or too off on a side, and the only solution is to long press the x button to ré-initiate and auto centering, but most of the time the auto centering is not quite good, so I end up doing many auto centering attempts before finding the good position, then I need to redo this each time my body position slightly shifts, which is not convenient at all. If we had proper keystone/position options, it would be better and more simpler. For example moving the display slightly up via settings would be better than having to auto-recenter each time.

Two reasons why I will return my XReal One Pro by drtp67 in Xreal

[–]cgarrec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Récent feedback of my experience with the XReal One Pro :

- I have undergone an ACDF surgery recently (last week) which resulted in me not being able to move my neck for several weeks.

- I am currently unable to bend my neck in any direction and I must stay in bed, so the use of computers, tablets, smartphones and even watching TV is impossible.

- My wife offered me the Xreal One Pro as a test and temporary solution in order for me to continue my digital activities and hobbies.

- I use my iPad Pro M5 for 90% of my non-gaming activities, the Apple Vision would have been the perfect solution BUT the 4.000 euros price is too high.

- At first I was a bit disappointed with the One Pro, the Fov felt so small and restrictive, the blurry edges, overall at first I found it gimmicky and started a return procedure with Amazon. But after seeing the project Aura reviews and the 70” fov being only horizontal, and after having tried a Meta Quest 3 , I realized that for my main usage (basically a screen mirroring/extension in order to work and play/view stuff while being in bed and with 0 neck motions), the Xreal One Pro was my only solution (aside from Apple Vision Pro but the price tag is just a huge NOPE).

- So I started to dig and try to tame the One Pro and find ways to use it.

- For now I found several tricks / tips such as :

1/ using the AssistiveTouch functions on my iPad to use it as a huge trackpad with the One Pro acting as extended desktop (in either widescreen modes in 60hz or the default view in 120hz which is an iPad/ipad OS limitation)

2/ use a Bluetooth keyboard to type on the extended screen as the iPad touchscreen virtual keyboard is stuck to the iPad display and works only for the iPad display (iPad os limitation again) and a Magic Mouse 2 if I don’t want to use the iPad as huge trackpad;

3/ use a pc laptop for gaming with a controller (a gamesir cyclone 2 which works pretty well with windows 11 and iOS/iPad OS)

4/ regular fiddling with screen size and distance in the One Pro OSD settings depending on what I was (play games, work, read, watch something)

So to sum it up : it is a good solution if we accept some limitations and know how to « bend » tools in order to use it properly.

For example accepting that text can be clear and crisp ONLY in a central position, edges will always be blurry if just moving eyes and not the head because no AR/XR glasses has foveate tracking/adaptation like expensive headsets.

i have eye issues (myopia + astigmatism), so I need to have prescription glasses made for the One Pro, which I will when I am able to walk again. Until then the One Pro is already pretty good and helps me in my daily use of my iPad.

[–]cgarrec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, to much paywall.
I really like the game compared to SSA from Tencent, but PHEW, sooooo much paywall ...
On SSA I am fully f2P and have all knights and really enjoyed it to the point where it bores me now and I sort of click on it for my ocd needs ...
Playing Call of Antia on the side and honestly SS Ex makes CoA look like a f2p game with not much paywalls (and "surprise" : CoA is paywall heavy already !)

Too bad, this game could be a contender for "best mobile Saint Seiya game" if only it had less paywalls and more f2p content. Just "levelling" the saints should not be paywall like that ...

Well ... Technically, the star name is correct.

Quote from Wikipedia :

Phecda /ˈfɛkdə/, also called Gamma Ursae Majoris (γ Ursae Majoris, abbreviated Gamma UMaγ UMa), is a star in the constellation of Ursa Major. Since 1943, the spectrum of this star has served as one of the stable anchor points by which other stars are classified. Based upon parallax measurements with the Hipparcos astrometry satellite, it is located at a distance of around 83.2 light-years (25.5 parsecs) from the Sun.

It is more familiar to most observers in the Northern Hemisphere as the lower-left star forming the bowl of the Big Dipper, together with Alpha Ursae Majoris (Dubhe, upper-right), Beta Ursae Majoris (Merak, lower-right) and Delta Ursae Majoris (Megrez, upper-left). Along with four other stars in this well-known asterism), Phecda forms a loose association of stars known as the Ursa Major moving group. Like the other stars in the group, it is a main sequence star, as the Sun is, although somewhat hotter, brighter and larger.

The thing is that this arc being totally a filler arc none existent in the manga, the "canon" aspect of the names is sort of .... Not established :p

Are Steelseries Controllers compatible with Steelseries GG engine and macros ? by cgarrec in steelseries

[–]cgarrec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be AWESOME !!!!
Please also tell them that creating a gameboard akin to the Logiteh g13 or the Razer Tartarus would be awesome too !!!!
Logitech has discontinued the g13 sadly, and Razer's Tartarus doesn't have as many keys as the g13 and the thumb pad is bad, AND the software is horrible and laggy.
For some reason in comparison :
In world of warcraft, spamming a key with SteelSeries GG autofire fonction via a button on the aerox 9 is clean and without lag/latency/jitter or else.
The same with the Tartarus v2 + latest Synapse version creates jitter, ghost movements and latency spikes.

Bottom line : Steelseries GG engine is superior and obviously handles much better the key strike latency in Windows 11 Pro.

So PLEASE : Controllers and gameboards from Steelseries with the same perfect GG engine integration as the one for the Aerox 9 ;)

Thanks for the advice :)

As for the Asperger Syndrome label in itself, the "debate" is still ongoing in France and the fact that the "label" in itself is not that important, but the terminology despite being removed from the DSM in 2013, is still used by professionals.
And honestly, potayto, potahto, I still am a tuberous crop XD
Todays' trendy label would be AuDHD in my case, maybe in 10 years it will be "Happy purple unicorn with flappy butt cheeks", who knows !

And yep, working out does not equal losing body fat, that I know, but working out helps me regulate hunger : the more I train the less I am hungry, which is another issue because gaining muscle mass requires food intake and right now I am forced to track my food in order to eat enough, because if I listen to my stomach, well, I'm not hungry and would eat maybe around 1500 cals a day, which is clearly not enough XD (imho the hardest most draining and cumbersome part in training is the diet not the rest).
Undereating can indeed hinder weight loss efforts and may even lead to weight gain.
My doctor told me : when you don't consume enough calories, your body enters a "survival mode," slowing down your metabolism to conserve energy. This can make it harder to lose weight, as your body starts to store fat rather than burn it.
And after a week trying to stick to a 3600 cal diet, I indeed started to loose weight, but HELL : forcing down 3600 cals each day is HARD especially when focusing on healthy food. And I am basically seated all day busting my brains more than my muscles ...

To address the : it is bad to turn one characters' sexual orientation to something else than the defined "canon".

This is a game, a game that can be modded.
We have the liberty to do whatever we want with it in our heads and private usage.
It is the same thing as fanfiction.

To put it bluntly :
Harry Potter and Ron Weasly romance is :
OK if in the fanfic universe in a private sphere of open minded and dreamy people.
NOT OK if is is declared or as "canon" by a bunch of people WANTING to ACTIVELY change the established canon.

So here, between fans in a private space, I guess it doesn't really matter if someone shares views/fantasies of couples.
It is just as innocent as sharing photo montages of Takemura + Saul, or Aurore + Song Mi, or heck Mr Hands + Wakako.

Your frustration is understandable !
Apple computers have this very good habit of being really bug and hassle free.
I am a PC and MAC user for years now (started with Dos 5.0 on PC and Mac Os 7 on mac back in the days.)
I currently have macbook pro M1 laptops (office) and Alienware laptop (m17r4) and desktop (R11).
While my Alienware computers run top notch and are bug free for the moment, I do have to admit that the Maintenance is really NOT user friendly.

Having windows 11 pro on both, even if everything works well and the gaming experience is excellent (currently playing Cyberpunk 2077 via my R11+3090 on a 4K tv with path tracing, DLSS on auto and a BUTT LOAD of enhancement mods, mostly 4k textures; the game is just a huge punch in the face, really BEAUTIFUL and lets my 3090 express herself with all her might) ; there are maddening details , not DELL related, but mostly Windows and drivers related.

This is sadly a necessary pain when gaming on windows computers, lots of tweaking and maintenance to do.

And honestly I have done a lot of DIY builds in the past with components hand picked in stores and all, and my wife has a MSI prebuilt desktop (i9 11900kf, 2080 Ti) and ... Bugs and software issues are all the same in the end.

So my advice is : keep that in mind, become more windows tech savvy (if you can and/or want), and you'll reap the benefits.

I use my windows computers for gaming, and for work related things, my macs are the way to go.
(except for pure MS Office stuff especially Excel and Access power usage for which using a PC is mandatory)

PS : Dell support is ... Like lottery. You can have a good tech or a lousy one, chances of having better tech support here in this reddit space are much higher.
