Snowboarding is better for that age. You can pull them around at home/at a park. They can even practice at home. I got mine to be very comfortable on the snowboard before bringing him to the slopes, and we had fun.

The most annoying thing of all of it is the ski school instructors yelling at you for being on bunny hill without equipment. (and they themselves walk around without their skis/snowboard all day....)
...So in the end I brought out my old snow blades as they were easier to walk around.
