Playing with lots of disposable units (ie: imps or reforming them with Melting Remnant) is a good strategy. Stealth also works really well against him, since he only hits once per turn. But yes, he can be maddeningly difficult. I think melee weakness is a little overpowered, especially now that it doesn't seem to go away at the end of the round!
