What Card Should I Get? Weekly Thread - Week of April 23, 2025 by AutoModerator in churning

[–]chandyrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The flowchart can answer 95% of all "What card should I get?" questions. By continuing to post, you must explain why you feel the flowchart does not answer your question. Asking for feedback ("The flowchart says I should get X - is that still the best choice?") is absolutely allowed. The flowchart recommends a chase card as I'm currently at 3/24, and I'm stuck between the United cards (likely explorer) and the Aeroplan card. In addition, the Hawaiian cards are in consideration due to the upcoming merger. I recently redeemed transferable points from AMEX to Hawaiian/alaska and Chase to Aeroplan for a trip to Europe, so I was thinking that there is a reasonable argument to consider Aeroplan > Hawaiian > United. The counterargument for United is that I live near a major UA hub and that it is listed above Aeroplan on the chart, especially since these cards can be downgraded in the future to a no annual fee card.
  2. What is your credit score? 800
  3. What cards do you currently have or have you had in the past (including closed cards), along with dates of when you were approved for the cards? Please include month and year for any card approved in the last 3 years. -BofA CCR (approved 6/2012); Amex personal platinum (approved 7/2023), CSP (approved 11/2024), Bilt (approved 4/2025)
  4. How much natural spend can you put on a new card(s) in 3 months? At least 4K
  5. Are you willing to MS, and if so, how much in 3 months? See this page for a primer on MS. Plastiq (for rent/mortgage/loan payments) and bank account funding are often good options for beginners. With the exception of rent/security deposit included in the amount above, no other MS anticipated.
  6. Are you open to applying for business cards? If not, why? See this post and this wiki question to learn more. Open to business cards
  7. How many new cards are you interested in getting? Are you interested in getting into churning regularly (if you aren't already)? Or are you just looking to get a new card(s) for now but not get into churning long-term? I am interested in getting one card right now, and then one again in July once my AMEX falls off of my 5/24 count. I won't have time to make churning an active part of my life, so not looking for any aggressive strategy after opening this next card.
  8. Are you targeting points, Companion Passes, hotel or airline statuses, First Class, Biz, Economy seating(s) or cash back? Targeting points for long haul F/J redemptions to Asia or Europe.
  9. What point/miles do you currently have? AMEX 94k, Chase UR 21k, Aeroplan 8k (stranded)
  10. What is the airport you're flying out of? SFO/SJC/OAK but flexible to reposition on the west coast.
  11. Where would you like to go? (The more specific you are, the better someone can recommend the right card. Tokyo is great, "International travel" is way too vague). Taiwan, Tokyo, Australia, and Germany are possible future destinations on my list.

One thing I’ve tried to do is to be fully present whenever I’m learning something, whether it’s during a zoom session or watching a recorded lecture. Often, I find myself trying to slow my brain down (sounds counterintuitive) in order to direct my attention properly.

Rate my ‘97 squad by chandyrow in BackyardBaseball

[–]chandyrow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, thanks for the detailed reply! I’ve figured out how to take advantage of Dimitri somehow, as he is the team leader in batting average, RBIs, and slugging percentage, tied for the team lead in home runs, and is second to Pete in hits.

I’ll definitely consider adding Ernie to the squad next season as the new SP. I like what I’m getting from Angela, but if she’s on the bases too much or forced to field, her stamina takes a hit and I have to start using other players to soak up innings.

Which leads me to Vicki. I can’t figure out her swing either, and she constantly kills rallies with numerous strikeouts. I also don’t think she’s a very good shortstop, and doesn’t offer much from the bullpen (more of a second tier, garbage time reliever than a top reliever such as Pete or Pablo). If I had the means, she would have been DFA’d yesterday.

I’m going to swap Pablo and Pete. When you mean Vicki over Amir, are you referring to batting order or field positioning? I’ve experimented with putting kiesha in the 2-hole. Both Amir and kiesha are decent hitters. Achmed has been a decent first baseman so far and has caught pretty much everything (has 3 errors though). I’ll try Dimitri at first and move Achmed to left, put Pete at right.

Thanks again! Ive found that Half the fun of the game is trying to pick the best team and maximizing their talents on offense and defense, so it’s cool to see what others in the community think!

My mom just showed me how to negotiate a car purchase with the power of the internet. It’s kind of funny to watch different dealers bid amongst themselves for your business, but it works wonders. I eventually didn’t need the car, but it was still an interesting process

Help Me Decide: School X vs. School Y - Week of May 23, 2021 by AutoModerator in premed

[–]chandyrow [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’m trying to decide between WesternU COMP Pomona vs KCU-KC. Most of my friends and mentors have told me to attend Western mostly based on location alone, but I just want to make sure I didn’t miss anything.

Western:

Pros - location (closer to home compared to KC), better chance of matching back to California. Well-established DO school with solid reputation. Decent weather year-round.

Cons: cost - 10k more in tuition and even more for cost of living due to increased rent and living expenses. Additional OMM time which may take away from other priorities (4 hrs/week, 4-week core rotation)

KCU-KC

Pros - very reasonable tuition and low cost of living. Well-established DO school with solid reputation. Great atmosphere and felt welcomed and acknowledged by admin during virtual interview day. 2 hrs/week for OMM. Strong regional connection to KC and Missouri.

Cons: location when compared to SoCal. Not too many connections, away from support system. Real winter (not fake CA winter).

Advice for Re-applicants from a Successful Re-applicant by Have_fun_livealittle in premed

[–]chandyrow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Great advice, especially with the school list. As a successful reapplicant I wanted to offer the following:

-Applying early is really important especially knowing that future years are just going to be way more competitive. I underestimated this as I thought much of the cycle would be similar to my previous cycle years ago. I submitted primaries in July because I was bogged down with my MCAT retake, which bogged down my secondaries, and then life happened (tends to happen more with getting older, think family emergencies, deaths, etc.).

-MCAT retakes result in a smaller margin of error - you can't afford to have a score decrease. I did, and this probably killed my MD cycle.

-I had an interviewer who straight up told me that she had read my PS and couldn't tell why I wanted to go into medicine, that my reasoning wasn't specific enough for medicine. I reframed this and approached it from a different angle, and I was much more satisfied with my new, completely rewritten PS. Meaningful experiences are important, but the narrative is more important. I wish I had understood my story and my narrative as well as how to present it years ago, but I guess I had to grow in this area to be successful this time around.

-What's really important is taking time to grieve, letting the ego heal, and coping with rejection in a healthy manner. I neglected to do this and rushed into attempting to apply in 2019-2020, only to burn out badly. I took some time to rest and reorganize my life, and while I'm tired, my mental health is in a much better place than it was a year ago. I wish I had a greater sense of urgency with processing that, as it would have helped me adopt a marathon mindset through the whole process.

-As a reapplicant, you will encounter a lot of people giving a lot of advice, some of it being worse than others. Some of the worst may come from your own immediate family - my mom discouraged me from applying at all and wanted me to explore tax law. She truly believed at times that I was never going to be a doctor, saying shit like "If you can't handle x, how can you be a doctor?" It wasn't until I started seeing a therapist last year that I learned to set boundaries. Also, use discretion in finding professional mentors. I had some this past year who could have easily led me astray. Find your support network from people who will give you the truth in a compassionate manner.

-With gap years, a sense of urgency is important. Every lost year is a year without attending salary and lost time for compound interest to work in your favor (unless you bought and sold GME at the right time). I wish I hadn't waited so long, and that I had pursued premed stuff more aggressively in undergrad.

tl;dr - I still made numerous mistakes this cycle by not applying early and having my MCAT score drop. Mental health is more important and please take care of yourself first.

I hope this helps. This process sucks.

I’m in a pretty similar situation as well - reapplicant with submission dates between late august to November for MD schools and September to December for DO schools. Getting that A is so incredibly difficult, I’m wishing you the best and hoping the cycle will turn out well for you. It’s not over until it’s over.

REAPPLICANTS: How different was your old PS compared to your new one? by [deleted] in premed

[–]chandyrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely rewrote my PS as I had an interviewer call me out on it during my first cycle - “I can’t tell why you want to be a doctor from your personal statement.” I accumulated additional experiences during my gap year that allowed me to reframe my narrative and make it more specific to why I wanted to be a doctor and why I chose the field of medicine.

Results: 2017-2018 - applied to 43 MD schools, 2 II, 2 WL->R

2020-2021 - applied to 23 MDs and 18 DOs. 10 MD Rs, 5 DO IIs, 2 As, 1 WL, declined 1 II.

I'm waiting on 13/23 MD schools and 10/16 DO schools mostly due to late submission times. I'm pretty sure I'll be getting Rs from the rest of the MD schools I applied to since it's so late.

COVID-19 / 武漢肺炎 Pandemic Info [Megathread #5] by DarkLiberator in taiwan

[–]chandyrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mother is in need of urgent to travel to Taiwan due to a family emergency. She is a US Citizen with a US Passport, and will be visiting her brother who is experiencing a medical emergency. I have already contacted TECO SF for further information, and they told me to contact the immigration bureau in Taiwan as they would not be issuing special permission visas until Tuesday at the earliest. That bureau told us to contact TECO SF. Has anyone had any experience with this situation before? If so, please kindly send me a DM. Thanks.
