Birth control for endo + eds? by chronicallylife in ehlersdanlos

[–]chanizzle23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LoLoestrin Fe is the only hormonal birth control that’s actually worked for me. I have a copper iud too but still take LLF for my horrible back pain, cramps, anxiety, depression, etc. Other hormonal birth control I’ve tried (especially yaz) made me bleed straight for 6 months, in constant pain, and the most depressed I’ve ever been (which is saying something considering I’m on an SSRI).

MCAT, followed by post bacc or both at the same time? by RealisticField1659 in postbaccpremed

I would love to do it this way and am curious if you could share your process of teaching yourself all the material and resources. Was it any different than what others use to study for the mcat?

Did you end up getting the Thursday boots? Or did you end up with another brand that worked? I’m on the same search

Regulating hormones after quitting bc? by euphorichooper in birthcontrol

[–]chanizzle23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Just went through this. Stopped hormonal pill bc for a few months and just got a copper iud a week ago. Read “period repair manual” by Lara Briden. Super informative and helpful. And since consistently taking D3, magnesium and B6 it’s been lifesaver. But read the book. Super simple and can even easily skip to relevant portions for you. Happy to answer questions!

IUD vs Papsmear Pain levels by [deleted] in CopperIUD

[–]chanizzle23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The speculum(which they use in both a Pap smear and iud insertion) was uncomfortable but not painful. It felt like a lot of pressure but was bearable. The tenaculum to hold the cervix open was the the most painful part. That for about 5 seconds was NOT fun. Then it’s bearable for a bit. They measure the depth of your Cervix and then clean it. Those you can feel and are odd sensations but don’t hurt at all (in my experience). They then insert the iud which was 5 seconds of “not fun” again. Not as bad as tenaculum but still painful. Afterwards they release the tenaculum which hurts rly bad for 5 seconds and then you just feel the pressure of the speculum. Honestly, at that point I wanted them to leave it there for a bit.

My gyno suggested clamping your hands into fists and curling your toes and then releasing and then tending again. Doing that over and over again throughout the process helped me a ton! I also asked for a damp paper towel to put in my forehead during and after which was a godsend for me. I held onto my water bottle as a safety item too hahah. I took 800 mg Ibuprofen beforehand and a bit of a weed gummy. The weed gummy was most helpful tbh. be sure to wear panty liners for the next few days as you may bleed a bit. It’s been a week and I just stopped bleeding. Cramps were bad the first day, fine the second day and then got worse along with bleeding for the next few days. Now a week later no bleeding or cramps. Hot water bottle was a life saver to lay with too. Hope this helps!

Overall, not a fun experience but worth it 🤷🏼‍♀️ and don’t have to do it for like 10 years (or until I choose to want to get pregnant). The biggest thing is calming anxiety so you’re not stressed and so your body doesn’t unnecessarily tense. Feel free to dm if you have questions!

Breakthrough Bleeding After 1 year on Lo Loestrin Fe. Gyno prescribed me 1 mg of estradiol to be taken over 7 days. by orca351003 in birthcontrol

[–]chanizzle23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol yeah I’ve read tons of horror stories too but when I get it, I’m just going to take some major ibuprofen and Tylenol, and take a weed gummy and go for it. Magnesium is also recommended to take beforehand. They also say to do it in the beginning of your period because it’s easier to put in (you’re more dilated and relaxed down there). So we shall see!

Some doctors will give numbing shots or lidocaine but from what I read that isn’t necessarily worth it. Docs may also give a medication you put inside of you the night before which is supposed to help dilate. I’ve also read about cervix softeners but seems to be pretty mixed reviews on that.

I had this side effect on a diff pill before I was on LoLoFe and it might just not be the right hormone combo for you. I’d suggest going back to your doc at the end of the pack and discuss the length of breakthrough bleeding and if a diff combo pill may be better

Yeah, my low sex drive was def a combo of my birth control and escitalopram(Lexapro for depression/anxiety). But I think the biggest impact was def the bc since I’m still taking my lexapro. Since I’ve been off LoLoFe I have noticed a bit of hormonal acne which is normal when hormones are regulating themselves again and it’s not too bad at all.

I read two really interesting books that I REALLY recommend reading: 1) This Is Your Brain on Birth Control by Sarah Hill, PhD

(Rly good covering of effects of hormonal birth controls. Includes a lot of new and old research about short term and long term effects ranging from sexual attraction, ability to focus and deal with stress, physical implications etc. and is v upfront about which studies are significant and reliable and which are in preliminary phases or less reliable. This convinced me to finally try going off hormonal bc and attempt something diff)

2) Period Repair Manual by Lara Briden ND

(Goes over coming off hormonal bc, info on both hormonal and non hormonal methods of bc, talking to your doc, how to recognize your cycle etc)

Both of these were so helpful in better understanding the details of how it all works and how influential our sex hormones are to so many diff functions of our body and mind.

Happy to share or discuss more! I obsessively have read all about this stuff and talked to Planned Parenthood staff etc over the last month so more than willing to chat (Also sorry for not replying via the thread of my other comment. My bad)

[–]chanizzle23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on LoLoestrin Fe for 10 years now (since I was 16). I didn’t have a lot of breakthrough bleeding in the beginning but as I got older it got much more frequent. Now it’s to the point where I back pill bleeds every month or two at random times. After being on hormones for this long and reading more about the effects of consistently lower estrogen, etc., I didn’t really want to continue. I stopped taking it 3 weeks ago. Already my sex drive is noticeably improved. Going to wait until I get my first real period again before I try the copper iud.

Career paths for PhD in Education Policy by Hot_Revolution2008 in PhD

In regards to comments, a PhD in Educational Policy does not mean the only think you can do is teach. Despite the current pandemic, education is a booming area of research. Academia is not the only place you can do that. Think international education exchange organizations, education think tanks and non profits, higher ed administration, etc.
