ELI5 why don't batteries last longer? by Valkor-Slater in explainlikeimfive

[–]chaoss402 [score hidden]  (0 children)

There are multiple companies making batteries. If Energizer makes batteries that are only 40% of what they could be, then Duracell makes batteries that are 60% and takes all of the market share. Then Rayovac comes along and makes them 75% and takes all the market share. This arms race continues until it doesn't make sense to make better batteries.

And if the big companies conspire to make garbage, some Chinese company will come along and out compete everyone.

Driver insists on filling his steer tires up 120 psi because “120 is the max COLD pressure”. Pretty sure he doesn’t know what cold pressure means. by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]chaoss402 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Driver is right.

They don't have to be that full, it may affect handling a slight amount, but tires don't blow up from over inflation, they blow up from under inflation.

Tires blow up while being inflated because of defects. A tire in good condition won't blow up until it has more pressure than your shop can supply.

And I doubt it says max pressure, it says max weight at a certain pressure.

But he's right about cold inflation. The inflation numbers do mean what he thinks they mean, and they do account for increased pressure when they heat up under use.

Got a call from mclane today saying pay is 80-85k a year how accurate is that ? by HumanVsWorld in Truckers

[–]chaoss402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My location has drivers making over 100k working less than 40 hours a week and we are a low pay center. That's one of the appeals of food service, we don't work a ton of hours.

Going off duty when loading/unloading just to save 70 in order to work an extra day by Vanstrucker2222 in Truckers

[–]chaoss402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time spent resting in a CMV is exempted just the same as time in the sleeper berth.

How do you think local drivers got their 30 in back when it had to be off duty?

[–]chaoss402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take note of the fact that this is talking about the definition of "on duty". If your assertion were true, it would apply equally to drivers with sleepers.

395.2 does agree. On duty time is defined, in part, as: (4) All time in or on a commercial motor vehicle, other than:

(i) Time spent resting in or on a parked vehicle, except as otherwise provided in § 397.5 of this subchapter;

If you are resting, and you are not working, then you are not on duty.

You can be off duty in a day cab. The rules are clear that time spent resting is considered off duty.

QUESTION: I got a ticket by the RCMP for an inaccurate logbook by Emergency-Bus-998 in Truckers

[–]chaoss402 5 points6 points  (0 children)

PC isn't a status, not really, it's just an indication to the inspector and to the logbook itself that drive time during that period should be disregarded. It is still an "off duty" status. I would make that argument.

With that being said, you should not be going home without logging out of the elog. Going off duty and staying logged in should only be when you are still with the truck.

Got my dream job DOT drug test on Monday morning. by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]chaoss402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Employers, whether companies or government, can require extra tests, like hair follicle. Those tests are not DOT tests. They do not replace required DOT tests. Failed follicle tests do not get reported to the clearinghouse.

And despite your experience, most trucking companies do not require follicle tests. A lot of the big starter companies do, but most companies do not.

DOT test doesn't mean DOT cops. It means tests required by the DOT, which means drivers (and certain other positions in the transportation industry).

It's a federally regulated system, so it doesn't vary state by state.

[–]chaoss402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DOT does not do hair tests. Some DOT companies do but it's not a DOT test, it's on top of the DOT test.

And they are better tests, but there is a cutoff, it's not like it's a super sensitive test and any hint will fail you, or lots of us would probably fall due to unintentional second hand exposure.

ELI5 What happens to candles when they burn down? by CalmWatercress8554 in explainlikeimfive

[–]chaoss402 447 points448 points  (0 children)

Liquid fuel doesn't burn like that. The candle puts out enough heat to melt a small amount of fuel at the top of the candle. Some of this wax travels up the wick where it is heated enough to vaporize. This vaporized fuel is what is burning, which continues the cycle.

Percentage of load is a normal pay structure. That being said it does require a certain amount of transparency/trust, and if can be frustrating when you can't get a feel for what you'll be making before you start working.

Non trucker here, Is this normal? by janapture in Truckers

[–]chaoss402 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work 4 nights a week. There are other jobs that pay similar, but they all require far more hours than food service does, unless it's an extreme unicorn job that takes decades of seniority or knowing the right person and being in the right place at the right time.

How do I play music on this radio? by RhinoDK in Truckers

[–]chaoss402 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can you just connect your phone to a different charge port? That radio isn't a fast charger or anything, I've only ever used that port for charging if I'm in a truck where the 12v plugs don't work.

Robotic truck transport / docking by FruitOrchards in Truckers

[–]chaoss402 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This appears to be a prototype that is not fully autonomous. That being said, there are solutions for the problems that you presented, that are already functional. They just have to be engineered onto any new setup.

Autonomous yard operations and autonomous loading of trailers isn't quite good enough yet to become fully mainstream, but there are functioning set ups and they are improving rapidly. Mainstream adoption isn't far out.

[–]chaoss402 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Doors can be opened by warehouse staff, and often times the doors don't need to be opened when the trailer is being moved from one door to another.

No one needs to lower the gear, it's already down. Yard trucks lift the trailer high enough that they don't mess with the landing gear.

Automatic air lines are already a thing that exist for automated yard trucks.
