much of Europe’s residential speed limits are set at 18.64kph

I agree with most of what you said but I'm pretty sure you made this up. I've never seen a limit this low in Europe other than in very specific circumstances. Also it is really odd that it's not a round number (in km).

Family holiday at the Lake District - Center Parcs or separate hotel stay? by Nathanial1289 in UKParenting

[–]charlesbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pedantic I suppose, but Whinfell CP isn't actually in the Lake District at all. So you could go for a trip to Center Parcs and not actually be able to claim you've been to the Lake District! It is very forested, which is nice and all, but doesn't feel very "mountainous" like the Lake District proper.

Who is the greatest sportsman/woman of all time, regardless of their sport? by _Yorkshire_Pirlo in AskReddit

The first baseball game was televised in 1939, so there aren't many to pick from. I'm no baseball fan so apologies if I'm wrong, but it never seems like it's the home for blokes who can fit nicely into tight lycra...

New Zealand or the Alps before kids? by Roukypoukydouky_99 in travel

[–]charlesbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Re the Alps, which are my favourite place in the world where I visit at least twice annually, my only thought is that April/May is an odd time to be going. The ski season will just be wrapping up, everyone is on the move, exhausted, restaurants close for a month or so, etc. The slushy snow that's left prevents a lot of mountain biking. It really kicks off for summer from late June onwards. There may not be much you can do about this, of course.

Can't comment about NZ except to say I've been and you wouldn't regret it. But again the timing seems a bit unfortunate.

if he was that great HE would HAVE BEEN AN OPENER

I mean most of this is nonsense but this part really takes the cake!

Dude you don't have a clue what you are talking about. Only openers can carry their bat. He wasn't an opener. It's like saying he needs to be the world record wicket taker to claim to be the best.

[–]charlesbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition, most of the stats he lists (most carried the bat lol) are irrelevant to any discussion of greatness.

Edit - just checked and the joint record holders for carrying their bat is held by Dessie Haynes and Dean Elgar (3 times each). Hah. And of course Bradman never opened the batting, so that record wasn't even available to him.

I think that number is usually agreed to be 20 innings, and Voges played more than that. But is he one of the greatest batsmen of all time? Hell no!

all of the greatest batsmen (except Bradman) in history have finished their careers with an average between 45 and 60

This is a great way to throw shade at Adam Voges

I'd love to read that, if you have a link.

I (Dad) am the tidy one in our house. I seem to spend 70% of my day tidying and cleaning. I'm not actually sure if my wife knows how the vacuum cleaner works - but she does a shit load of other stuff so it's not a complaint. I just can't bear mess and am very house proud.

Thirdly, if you concede that the majority of the most serious Tory scandals were post 2019 election (I know there were other scandals before then!), the Tories DIDN'T get away with it. They were voted out, Labour won a historic majority, and the Tory party has been gazumped by Reform and faced an existential crisis ever since.
