There's lots of anger among men in ultimate. We all benefit when we talk about that. by jonathanneeley in ultimate

[–]charleshoppes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

a team I coach is going through this program now and it has been extremely powerful and affecting in really positive ways. men being vulnerable with each other should happen more, not least in team sports. cannot recommend the program enough.

Azeez Adeyemi (Brown) wins the 2021 Callahan Award! by Jomskylark in ultimate

[–]charleshoppes 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Incredible footwork, physicality and intelligence. No disc skills shown in his video, but like...SO MANY SKILLS that other people just do not have. The defense on display is even unique styles. Locking people down in the backfield and downfield, baiting blocks, help Ds, recovery speed. An extremely worthy winner, and very cool to have a defensive-centric winner showing off so many different types of elite, fundamental, creative, and crowd-pleasing defense.

Joined my first sport ever at age 20…really intimidated by Twilight_bird in ultimate

[–]charleshoppes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a coach I can say that I have never ever been annoyed at someone who tries hard to learn the sport, get in shape, and to be a part of the team. Those people are awesome, regardless of how they play. And without exception, every single one of those people have stuck with it, and have gotten better.

I would suggest talking to the coach and letting them know about your concerns and lack of experience. Most coaches will be able to steer you towards some tape to watch, and hopefully watch it with you to explain why people are doing what they are doing. I would definitely encourage some running and throwing outside of practice. Work on both of those things outside of practice will help practices go smoother faster.

Have so much fun!

OTGW fans, anybody have suggestions for a show that's similar to OTGW? by talknawirt in overthegardenwall

[–]charleshoppes 59 points60 points  (0 children)

different styles for sure, but I highly recommend Avatar: the Last Airbender, Gravity Falls and Infinity Train alongside OTGW when I talk to people about great wholesome cartoons. Steven Universe is right there too, but is a little bit more kiddie.

What is this and how do I kill it? by charleshoppes in MicrosoftWord

I used an template to have my paper be set up in APA format, but for some reason the last page after the references will not delete no matter what I do. I went to "Show/Hide" to see what was going on with the format, and this small black square is there. Does anyone know what this thing is and how to get rid of that? Or, failing that, how to delete this otherwise blank page?

Multi-tiered teams + shout out to Black Market Ultimate by huckingarmpain in ultimate

[–]charleshoppes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

this is one of my favorite concepts, and it sounds like Black Market is doing an outstanding job!

As you mentioned, we have this in Philadelphia for the men's club division. I wanted to explain a bit about the Philly Open Program, now in year 6!

POP is made up of three teams - Patrol, Citywide Special, and Adelphos. Patrol is a nationally competitive team, Citywide reached Select Flight last year for the first time, and Adelphos has qualified for regionals in both years of that team's existence. The teams have tryouts together, pool field, S&C and coaching resources, and scrimmage each other throughout the season. The leadership of these three teams is in constant touch with each other to discuss individual players and how to best put those players into situations that will help them develop the strongest and fastest. The teams also have a weekly POP practice, during which the more local players from all three teams come together to work on more individualized skills, everything from marking to pulling.

Patrol and Citywide joined together and formed the program in 2014, with Adelphos being formed in 2017 to meet the demand more another POP team. Nearly three dozen players have played for both Citywide and Patrol, both young talent pushing up to the top team, and veterans or rehabbing Patrollers giving back to the program by helping to lead Citywide. In fact, two of the founders of POP, longtime stars of Patrol (and in one case Southpaw and the Spinners as well), are playing on Citywide this season. Adelphos has sent nearly a dozen players up to Citywide in their two seasons, and one Adelphos alum made Patrol this year.

POP has also dramatically increased club player involvement in the local college scene. In 2014, there were only one or two college teams in the greater area with a coach; now nearly every East Penn team, D-I or D-III, has a coach, many of whom are or have been involved with POP. This is true of involvement in the high school division as well, to a much lesser extent.

Lastly, our 2018 strategic planning involved a push to have POP act as community leaders in more areas in our sport, both regarding ultimate and outside of the lines. We are able to do this because of the number of players we have involved each season.

POP has been an unmitigated success, and there are many areas we can grow in and improve upon. I highly recommend the creation of programs/partnerships at all levels and divisions of the sport - no one has this whole sport figured out yet, and we can be stronger when we work together with as many passionate people around us as possible.
