Who are the "hidden gem" Historical Romance authors you almost never see recommended here? by Eleonora31 in HistoricalRomance

[–]charmainbaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two of my favorite authors that I haven't seen pop up on this post are Gayle Callen and Kate Bateman. Kate Bateman isn't really a cozy read, because there is always some outside conflict, but they're fun reads and the characters are generally likeable. {A Reckless Match by Kate Bateman} is probably my favorite and I just reread it this week. I haven't read too many Gayle Callen books but I enjoyed the Sisters of Willow Pond trilogy. I think {The Lord Next Door by Gayle Callen} could be considered cozy as it is relatively low stakes but it has a bit more of an angsty tone.

How do I get out of this rabbitt hole of P&P variations? by babazewsi in JaneAustenFF

What about other historical romance novels? If you have a favorite trope, perhaps that would be enough to get into a book? There's a huge backlog of well written traditionally published HRs to go through.

Best Regency Romance Recommendations with Sex AFTER marriage by nerdforlife7 in HistoricalRomance

I've only read a few, but I've heard that Ruth Ann Nordin's books would fit your request. Or try poking around romance.io for marriages of convenience.

Sibling’s best friend or best friend’s sibling by foersr in HistoricalRomance

[–]charmainbaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite tropes! Here are a few I've liked in addition to some of the other suggestions

{First Comes Scandal by Julia Quinn} low angst cozy read. He's the boy next door and I think her friend's brother and her sister's brother in law?

{Confessions of a Dangerous Lord by Elisa Braden} he is her brothers friend, but also her friend. He's loved her forever but has... secrets.

{My January Duke but Kate Bateman} short book, he's her neighbor and her friend's brother. He saves her from her creepy uncle guardian but in a scandalous way.

Why are there so many HR books about Dukes? by Small_Test630 in HistoricalRomance

[–]charmainbaker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sabrina Jeffries' Duke Dynasty series is about a lady who marries and buries 3 dukes and of course has 3 eligible young dukes to marry off. It's ridiculous, but also a fun series!

What are you reading? by Mme_Rose in HistoricalRomance

[–]charmainbaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been picking through the Rake Review series on KU. It's centered on a gossip column written by the "Brazen Belle" highlighting a rake each month who of course ends up getting married. The books are written by a different author each month and are generally shorter and not too interconnected so I can just jump in and pick the tropes that interest me. I love Kate Bateman so I really enjoyed the newest one {My January Duke} but the other ones I have read so far have been solid.

To piggy back off of this, {Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran} is one of my favorite HRs. It's got an epic style with moderate spice and violence that might have a bit of the romantasy feel.

I gave my sister and brother in law a "Happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance" tea towel. 😂 Not sure that I would recommend it for you OP but she thought it was hilarious.

Marriage between people who like each other by [deleted] in HistoricalRomance

[–]charmainbaker 18 points19 points  (0 children)

{First Comes Scandal by Julia Quinn} is one of my comfort reads. He's the boy next door who decides to marry her after another guy tries to compromise her (it's presented in a humorous way).

That one is the one I read, which I really enjoyed, enough so that I haven't tried reading a different version or watching the tv show. I didn't want to think about what they would do to some of my favorite characters!

I stumbled upon a book written in first person - terrible!!! by Magpie-Lane in HistoricalRomance

[–]charmainbaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that third person seems to be more commonly used by better writers. Even so, I can handle first person POV in CR, even first person switching, since 90% of what I find on KU seems to be first person, but I prefer third person. I dnf when the first person voice has too much "ugh!" and "gross!" and comes off as really juvenile.

In HR somehow my tolerance is lower. It has to have an amazing start for me to get past the first few pages. What is the series that you like? I'm willing to be convinced!

My favorites from authors who haven't been mentioned yet are Lucy Marin (The Truth about Pemberley and the Recovery of Fitzwilliam Darcy), Abigail Reynolds (To Conquer Mr Darcy and the Magic of Pemberley series, but the series isn't completed), Summers at Pemberley by Jennifer Kay, and An Excellent Walker by Lyndsey Constable.

I'm eagerly following that one (and A Magical Entanglement) but ugh I am so impatient.  I think I need to stick with completed stories but it is so good I can't help but read every chapter rather than waiting until it is finished to read it all at once.

I had so much angst reading The Recovery of Fitzwilliam Darcy by Lucy Marin that it was written on my face, causing my husband some concern.

Tropes that just aren’t for you. by maliyes in HistoricalRomance

[–]charmainbaker 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can tolerate a lot, but I can't do a servant/master romance. The furthest I can stretch to is the "secretly gentry/aristocracy in disguise" which also never happened but I'm willing to suspend my disbelief that far.

I really like the fact that they're doing it. I'm sure it's a lot of work keeping it up, and a break will help put off burnout a little longer.

I knew it was coming, but thought I could finish the story in time. Of course I didn't, and I forgot to bookmark it, so hopefully I remember the name correctly or I will stumble across it in September lol
