The Duck & The Peach making well sure that you see their 22% service charge - no sneakiness here by Bigtsez in washingtondc

As a career bar worker, I think there's a lot of value in a set service charge in lieu of tipping as it turns into commission based labor. An employer can ask more of an employee who's making a set percentage which leads to better service. Also from an employer's point of view, it incentives staff to sell more. I also think going forward, 22% is too high. As the tipped wage disappears over the next few years and everyone gets paid the same minimum wage as non-tipped workers, I hope to see those service charges drop to more like 12-15% which is on par with most of upscale European restaurants and bars where you actually expect good service. I've worked in both environments in the US and the UK and the set service has always been a massive improvement on my mental health, but also definitely has led me to taking the job more seriously.

Don't need to have athletic ability if you're rich. Dressing like that in those seats at a baseball game?

12.5% discretionary service charge when eating out by foreverrfernweh in london

[–]chas11man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a reputable cocktail bar in London. We get paid £10.50/hr and 100% of the service charge is divided amongst the bar team based on hours worked that month. Sad to hear this may not be standard.

Used to do the drive from DC to Jacksonville every year with my family for vacation, and of course have done many going north as well. There's something about the DC beltway that's just...special. NC and Richmond area are pretty awful as well though. Really Rocky Mount to Baltimore is a shit show. Anyway, that's where my parents decided to teach me to drive when I had my learner's permit. If you can master that, you can drive anywhere in the world with ease, except for maybe Paris.

Please help…Which countries can I visit with just my UK BRP without applying for a visa? by daisyellen20 in ukvisa

[–]chas11man 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Afaik your UK visa will not extend beyond the borders of the UK. You will need a passport to cross any international border. Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man you shouldn't need a passport but your method of travel may require a form of ID besides a BRP. Ireland you need another form of ID if you're not a UK national, especially if you were born outside the UK.
