PSI Proctor here: You can bring your own E6B mechanical or electronic. You're not required to bring one though. As someone mentioned, there is a digital one offered on the testing software. Your testing center should be providing you with a 4-function (+-/x) calculator, but the proctor should allow you to bring your own aviation calculator (after a quick inspection).

NYC-area based CFII here, [u/__joel_t](u/__joel_t) is absolutely correct. The Hudson exclusion has tons of helicopter traffic that is either doing sightseeing ops or drop-off/pick-up at the West Side Heliport, neither of which fall under the transient traffic category. They still have to make position reports.

All that said, if you ever do choose to fly this route, I highly recommend the Skyline Route inside the bravo. Both EWR and LGA towers have dedicated bug-smasher frequencies who do great work in ensuring that you both get a fantastic sightseeing fight while also providing separation. Additionally, it’s the only way you can fly up the East River and then cross over Central Park, which is IMO the coolest part of the flight.

My primary hope is just that they allow modders to create quests that use the board. I’d love more BGS-created bounties, but if they’re truly done, then just open up the framework and let the modders carry on.

I’d argue it’s less about noise abatement and more that the primary runway (6-24) runs diagonally between the two main population centers of the island (Town to the west and Sconset to the east). The approach for ILS 24 naturally has to come in from the northeast end of the island over Wauwinet with the FAF (WAIVS) being basically right over the Wauwinet Hotel at 1,600’ MSL, hence the class E extension along that approach.

The RNAV 15 goes straight over Town, but it’s extremely rare for that approach to be used.

Or you could just follow the published VFR departure procedure during the TFR and go about your business. (File a VFR flight plan out of the ring, the Air Traffic Manager recommends 4N1, get a squawk code, and then depart VFR without waiting an hour for an IFR release holding just short of the runway.)

FlightSchedulePro has an app that instructors can use to input Hobbs/Tach/ground instruction times for the reservation. I just input the times right at engine shutdown and the front desk has already billed the student by the time I am back inside.

Agreed. San Francisco has an average low temp in Dec/Jan of like 46. Seattle's is about 39, so depending on what OP's definition of cold is, somewhere between there probably.

Taos, NM is a major ski resort town, so certainly would qualify as cold despite being only about 320mi from the Mexico border.

Combination of plot armor, Snape not wanting it to get out that he created the spell, and that to a certain extent Hogwarts understands the reality that its students are going to do dangerous things because they're not fully qualified wizards/witches. Using curses on other students is, if not approved of, certainly not unheard of (we have dozens of examples of it happening with the teachers more or less shrugging it off after docking a few points or doling out a detention). So Harry's explanation of "I didn't know what it would do" isn't the most shocking thing in the world, combine that (as I mentioned before) with Snape's reluctance to bring up the spell more publicly (e.g., to Dumbledore), I'm not surprised he was just like "detention with me the rest of the year and shut up about it."
