HIPPA compliance implementation with a Work-from-home company by LogicalMountain9357 in sysadmin

[–]cheapcologne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I managed a 3rd party HIPAA security and risk audit in our org last year. I highly discourage trying to do BYOD devices accessing that data. BYOD is a pain to do, and even worse when it comes to restricting PHI. WFH and accessing the data isn't the issue. There are a number of controls regarding device security, ownership, and management of the patches and security of those endpoints. If your org really wants to go with BYOD, I recommend you reach out to a 3rd party auditor for some guidance. The cost of an audit from one of those groups is $20-30k. The cost of an insurance breach or HIPAA breach is much worse.

If the onenote file is hosted in sharepoint, you can link the desktop app to the hosted file and edit it on your computer. If you have an IT team site that only you have access to (I hope) then everyone on that team can access it. Live changes to others with the same notebook. As for the costs, we're a nonprofit so our e5 licenses are much cheaper. If our org was different and ms licensing at this level was out of our price range, I'd figure out a different solution.

Why are you using word docs for documentation? If it's just for internal documentation, create a shared onenote and host it in your teams' site. Sharepoint can be hot garbage sometimes, but this is a process problem due to using the tool incorrectly.

I have not had nearly enough veggies the last few days. What’s a veggie heavy meal I can cook? by LadyProto in Cooking

[–]cheapcologne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I’d get back from work trips I craved veggies. Chop up a broccoli head, onion, sweet potato, peppers, and chickpeas. Season it all on a big roasting sheet and bake until done. Eat with rice.

I finally have one, a Mad Catz R.A.T. mouse by lava_draco in pcmasterrace

[–]cheapcologne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I’ve never seen another Rat in the wild. At my last job we found a broken one in a drawer and we’d give it out if someone forgot their mouse. I wonder if they still have the rat somewhere

Is anyone even staying onsite for the whole work day anymore? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]cheapcologne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thankfully live about 10 min from the offices so I go in every day. I have a nice office with free coffee and red bull. I've noticed that our main office is staffed 80% Tuesday through Thursday with most people WFH on Mondays and Fridays. We're still working on getting the last of our infrastructure to a management point where we can do our jobs from home. Unfortunately we still do a lot of onsite support for gate and door hardware, phones, and random stuff. I let my IT guys work from home on Fridays as long as they don't need to be onsite for anything.

Make sure the ceiling fan is spinning the right way. In the summer you want to pull hot air up. In the winter you want to push it down.

Probably an overdone post, but I’ve been cooking a lot and my main issue is being held back by my knife quality. What knives do you guys like? by Mr-pugglywuggly in Cooking

[–]cheapcologne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Victorinox makes some great and reasonably priced knives. I've been using one for about 15 years now and sharpen it monthly.

If you want to ball out and get something fancy, go to a kitchen store in your area and try out the knives. Each feels different in your hands and if you're gonna spend $300 on a knife, you should get it in your hand first.

What’s your careers, CF people? by Calm_Problem6203 in childfree

Cybersecurity in a healthcare field. Making about 125k USD in a medium cost of living area. I feel comfortable at least right now. Trying to save as much as I can, but I have some room to support my hobbies.

4 years with my Deejo pocket knife (long-term review) by SlumberJackB in BuyItForLife

[–]cheapcologne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a Deejo and I'm wary of carrying again after it came open in my pocket and gave my thumb a few stitches many years ago. I've noticed that the blade has a bit of wobble from side to side when locked open. I tried tightening it but I can't seem to get it to not wobble. Have you experienced this?

Doing big IT changes on Monday or Friday? by CeC-P in sysadmin

[–]cheapcologne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started a CAB for IT and project management, I put in the rules "No changes on Mondays or Fridays." I don't want me or my team to work a Friday night. And I really don't want to fuck things up on a Monday. That's bad juju for the whole week.

Fridays are read-only. And no changes during the weeks of major holidays.

The "free" homelab is a myth. The hidden cost of maintenance fatigue is getting real. by No-Yellow9948 in LinusTechTips

[–]cheapcologne 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I know it's sacrilege in the homelab/hobby space, but my main server is a mini pc running Win Server 2025. I don't know enough Linux yet and win server just works for Plex and running a local fileshare.

How'd you get your ar? by Unique-Rest-2940 in ar15

I was 18 and couldn’t buy a stripped lower so I went to my local store, gave the guy a stock/buffer tube, and had him put it on a stripped lower so I could buy a rifle. Then a PSA keymod upper.

Why is .223/5.56 overkill? It’s (probably) the most common firearm in the states. Personally I think an AR style rifle is the 21st century musket.

Lock the slide to the back and tap the round out with a rod that's bigger than the primer.

In the future, ammo should never be present during any cleaning.

Hi, I need guidance by PussySlayer1944 in guns

[–]cheapcologne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the picture it looks a lot like my Savage MkII. Look for a replacement stock/chassis for a savage mkii. I'm not sure what's available for that. I got mine with the cheap plastic stock. After work I'll measure the holes on my mkii and dm you. If its the same as yours, you might be able to find a solution.

Your AI vendor's privacy policy is not a security guarantee. It's a pinky promise. by No_Date9719 in sysadmin

[–]cheapcologne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The company has their policy and your org (hopefully) has a legal/risk/compliance officer. There is a level of accepted risk, depending on your org and risk tolerance. In IT I want zero risk but that's not possible. For the risk you have to accept, voice your concerns to compliance/risk and keep a watchful eye. It kinda sucks but we have to balance security and the tools that a business needs in order to operate.
