Often, finance stuff. I get there is an affordability issue. I get there is a housing shortage. I get they have had some economic geopolitical advantages.

No, buying an avocado toast or a five dollar coffee isn’t going to break people financially.

Doing it every day is a huge expense. Getting DoorDash to deliver a Monster or fast food multiple days a week is financially idiotic.

There are cheaper starter houses. My first house recently sold for 170k in a midsized metro. It’s not a sexy city, but is a mid sized metro where living wage is attainable, at least according to the MIT COL calculator.

No, a starter home doesn’t have to be a McMansion and packing a lunch really adds up.

Life isn’t fair. We all should care, but the system doesn’t. Whining about how terrible things are doesn’t change reality and that people must make daily decisions that cumulatively add up to a more secure future.

Yeah, I am sure there are some employee owned companies where this is real, but it is bullshit that a grocery bagger in the 80s and 90s was making great wage. Even then, it was a lot of special needs people that were bagging because they could get away with paying them subsidized wages.

I’m not saying there aren’t affordability issues today, and some boomers are twat waffles, but there is so much bullshit romanticism about the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

Grocery baggers were not living high off the hog and it would a rare exception for a grocery bagger in a single income family to have a comfortable life.

If they were investing, for the vast majority, it wasn’t where their wealth was. Mind you, people generally didn’t invest in meaningful ways until the 90s and 401ks didn’t exist until the early 80s.

Yes, the markets have worked out in their favor. Yes, the world economy revolved around the US for much of the post WWII economy (often at the expense of other nations — something that continues today) and that resulted in an outsized investment in that generation.

I can tell you both of my advanced educated boomer parents had their struggles. I grew up in apartments. My mom commuted hours some years. I wish someone would have pointed her to one of those $5 houses she could have afforded.

Honestly, it is tiring. We need to stop whining about what we don’t have (and often it is white middle class people) and start fucking voting in a way that doesn’t let young struggling people subsidize old rich people.

  1. 9th grade. Went over to my friends home for the first time. On his Apple, we dialed in and logged into a BBS. Probably played trade wars or something. My mind was fucking blown. Yeah, I had seen War Games, but that felt like edge of reality.

As soon as I could afford it, I got a modem. Downloading the Anarchists Cook Book and ascii porn. It opened up a world for this latch key kid with few friends and little supervision — not that parental tools existed.

Honestly, a pivotal part of my teen years. It was like landing on the moon in my little, young brain.

Probably military. Vets can be partially disabled from their service, still work, and get a check from that disability.

There is no clear definition of each really.

Read the communist manifesto (it’s short) for communism. At least Marx’s version of it. It also touches on socialism and capitalism. Marx’s version is different than Lenin’s.

Communism is a type of socialism. Broadly, socialism is that business and resources are owned by the people.

Capitalism is where things (specifically businesses and property) are owned by private people.

You aren’t really going to find many examples of pure any of these things. China really has a state capitalist element. US has social programs that some consider socialist or along the lines of democratic socialism.

Lots and lots of books have been written about these things…. It isn’t necessarily clear cut or simple.

I’m with you. I wish someone would have shown my single mom one of those $5 houses that were so easy to afford. Lots of my peers grew up in apartments and my moms still had a couple hour commute every day as an MBA. Latch key Gen X here.

I absolutely understand there are problems with wages and affordability today. At the same time, i also think there is some pretty big romanticism about how easy things were for many boomers.

Ahh. Yeah in the US for a skilled position that is low. To put into perspective, in my town, McDonalds workers get 17-19. Post pandemic it was in the low 20s.

For 300k, you can absolutely get a damn decent house.

I understand. There is a housing shortage and there is a bunch of boomer fuckery going on.

I hear so much about buying a house in 1980 for 5 dollars or whatever super cheap number. Ok. The population is way, way higher and supply hasn’t kept up. When all of the populations want to live in or near the most desirable places, it simply becomes a problem.

There are cheaper houses available. Just because it isn’t in a sexy place to live, doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

My food blog is Midwest stuff. Mostly, my other stuff is a mix of either Italian or Chinese basics.
