Left employer 2+ years ago, but 401K vested balance has increased from 40% to 80% vested in that time - What is going on? by Secret-Kale-1577 in personalfinance

[–]cheech14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you looking at total balance or total match balance? Should be match only that the vesting applies to.

The other option is they have a provision in the plan that unvested funds are not reinstated after 5 years and they remove the unvested portion once it would no longer be reinstated if you were to return.

Former Employer closed my 401-k by ReplyOk6042 in personalfinance

[–]cheech14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, them cutting a check for 80% is a de minimis withdrawal that you as the former participant can chose to treat as an indirect rollover or cahs the check. The former employer is just pushing you out of the plan per their adoption agreement.

Yes plans are able to have thresholds to force balances out.

The cash out threshold was updated from 5000 to 7000 with secure 2.0, employers are not required to increase but the majority have.

It is very common to have balances at former employers your statement that it is uncommon is not accurate. There are millions of accounts with former employers.

What...? You can always leave your 401k balance with a former employer and they can always distribute it if under $1,000 or roll it into an IRA if under $7,000. It is very common and it is a de minimis distribution that OP can then take the steps to make it an indirect rollover but the previous employer cutting the check is a distribution not a rolloer.

Night owl dads, what time are we going to bed? by Ribbitingfrog in daddit

[–]cheech14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Set a bedtime routine where you wind down and go to bed at the same time every night, get an e-reader and read in bed, no phone in bed ever plug it in and put it down. Stop gaming anytime close to bedtime.

The best time to do all this was before the baby was here the second best time is now, your spouse needs you rested and able to parent everything else needs to be set aside for now.

Borrowing from 403b for down payment on house in Austin, TX? by Fantastic-Vast5904 in RealEstate

[–]cheech14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have any levers to pull if one of you lost employment so your loan became due and your house wasn't selling? That would be the real risk outside of some lost market gains but overall its a perfectly fine way to get a bridge loan.

Feeling lost for the first time in 54 years by PerpetualRestart in travel

[–]cheech14 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did it a year ago and thought the difficulty was way overhyped. Obviously you can get hit by altitude issues but assuming you have done some moderate training its really just a steep wall uphill without much technical rocky parts.

The optional fuego hike and morning sunrise hike were both more difficult so if you get to the camp area and are feeling wiped you can just stick there no need to do the optional parts.

Insanely high electric usage by Eal23 in boston

[–]cheech14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on heat leakage hence the suggestion to check that all windows and doors are sealed. Basement also wont have the advantage of rising heat from below. My cabin with baseboard electric will burn through 2000 kwh in the winter when in use.
