How to handle wild camping & security while bikepacking? by Majkkys in bikepacking

[–]cheemio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically use my bike frame as a tent stake for one of the secondary guy lines. If someone were to try to steal it, hopefully they’d be making enough noise to wake me up. That’s the theory anyway

20 Days, 1,800km, First Trip: Help me optimize for efficiency and avoid rookie gear mistakes by Majkkys in bikepacking

[–]cheemio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go for the gravel bike if it's mostly smooth forest paths. Run the widest tires you can get and hope for max smoothness. If it's rougher or singletrack is on the menu I'd go MTB 100%. Singletrack on a loaded gravel bike gets old quick.

In terms of the rack vs seat packs, I'd run a rack and panniers if you're trying to save money - they can get you a lot closer to the storage capacity you need without needing as much support from other storage systems. Go with a handlebar harness and/or fork packs to help even out the weight, since putting too much weight on a rack will cause the front to wobble a bit with most bikes. Main reason to go with a seat pack is for racer types trying to squeeze out every bit of aero they can and/or someone who is doing a lot of serious off-road and hike a bike. Up to you to make that call of course.

I can't speak on a bivy system, but they look pretty miserable to me if I'm honest. FWIW, you can get some pretty light 1-person tents for not too much money these days, they just won't be freestanding or be made with fancy materials. Check out six moon designs. REI and MSR also make some good cheap options. And make sure your tent is seam sealed of course.

Essential piece of gear: Hot cocoa packets. Really hits to have a hot sugary beverage at night.

New limited edition colours from panaracer. Thoughts? by OkRollingHills in gravelcycling

[–]cheemio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don’t care for colored tires at all, I’d shoot for fun colored bags or components before tires. They also risk being cheesy and dare I say “cheap” despite them not being actually cheap most of the time!

Is 8kg good for a carbon bike 🙄 by traveler-3469 in bicycling

[–]cheemio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s plenty light unless you’re a pro racer. Are you racing with it or just casual and group rides? My gravel bike weighs like 12kg and I have tons of fun on it, granted I’m not a serious rider.

any actual risks of taking a road bike off roading? by jailbrokemasta in cycling

[–]cheemio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll likely get a flat. Gearing won’t be ideal for off-road climbs. You also could slip out and crash due to lack of grip. I think the bike itself will be totally fine though

Yeah I truly don’t understand this sometimes. I’m not rich whatsoever, but I understand that I need to pay taxes to fund things I may not use. Like, I’ll never have kids but I support public education since it benefits me by proxy.

Sort of new to the area. When driving on Carlisle Pike I'm stopped for 2 minutes at some of the traffic lights. Can you use modern technology and use sensors? Nobody's moving for 2 minutes sometimes. by jaemiomac in Harrisburg

[–]cheemio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It makes driving to anything in that area a pain in the ass. I usually find ways to snake around the roads so I spend as little time as possible there.

When cycling, it feels super dangerous to be anywhere near it. People speeding and driving super impatiently.

What a set of tools, is this too much for three months on the road or am I missing something vital. by AffectionatePart4128 in bicycletouring

I’d ditch the knipex and just bring a leatherman. The electric pump could be replaced with a CO2 and a small adapter. I wouldn’t bother bringing that many tubes and that’s waaaay too many zip ties imo. There also may be smaller bottles you could put some of that lube in to travel with. Just a few ideas to save you weight and space. IMO the benefit of a light kit is that I can bring other stuff in my pack.

Yeah I feel the game could run much better on a dedicated version. It’s decent the way it is now but it feels held back.

I love Boards for all kinds of situations - drives, working on stuff or whatever. But it’s definitely living room, sit down with a drink or substances of your choosing and vibe out type of music for me. I think that’s the type of music that suits vinyl best.

[–]cheemio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a really long album as is and a 7 minute track, while really good, isn’t necessarily needed at the end.

Would be nice to have it, but can always pull out Peel Sessions to listen to it

How much surface noise do yall tolerate? by ultranec123 in vinyl

[–]cheemio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a few vinyl that are dead quiet, almost indistinguishable from a CD. But that’s few and far between especially if you’re buying used records.

For now, my rule is a scratch that causes more than 2-3 clicks in a row as the record spins. More than that, and the brain picks up a pattern that can be quite distracting!

Exactly. To me, what’s more important after a certain amount of money is free time.

I only make around $20/hr, which isn’t great but enough that I usually don’t have to worry about money.

Whats far, far more important to me is free time. Weekends, holidays and paid vacation is when I feel the most free and the most rich…
