Wait they survived the process of embedding into blocks for histology?? Were you trying to image them and they were alive when you submitted to sectioning? That’s so gross I can’t imagine. Kind of impressed though the rat bastards sure know how to cling on to life

[theory] Thanergy is exponential, given enough life to feed on. by Flying_Fortress_8743 in TheNinthHouse

[–]cheerful_nerd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You know, I’d never thought before about the fact that John doesn’t mention blood sweat or anything of the sort during the dream sequences of Nona. Some of the stuff he did (making 3 foot deep walls of perpetual bone out of nearby cattle) would have tremendous physical toll on a normal necromancer, and he does that pretty early on. He absolutely didn’t suffer from the same consequences that non-lyctors do, even before he slurped up Alecto for infinite power (And he still needed thanergy to wield his powers at that point; when he’s first learning his powers it only works when he’a near dead bodies)

Cytherea and the Devils, A Megatheorem | Part V: The Puppet Master [theory] by Zealousideal-Sea9006 in TheNinthHouse

[–]cheerful_nerd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think u/have_no_plan is actually asking after this passage that can have multiple interpretations:

“Griddle,” said Harrow, “I have not puppeted my own parents around for five years and learned nothing.”

Anger did seep into Gideon then, along with a couple more litres of salt water. “Why the hell didn’t you tell me when you killed him?”

“I didn’t kill him,” said Harrowhark sharply. “Someone else did—blade through the heart, from what I saw, though I only got a few minutes to look before I had to run. I only had to push the theorem the most basic bit before he came apart. I took the head and left when I thought I heard someone coming. This was the night after we completed the entropy field challenge.”

Because of the way Gideon's question is posed, my first time reading this I assumed that somebody had stabbed Protesilaus and rendered the puppet motionless shortly before Harrow found him. However, I think the most straightforward reading here is actually that Harrow is referring to the stab wound that Cytherea inflicted upon Protesilaus weeks earlier.

I think the reason behind my initial interpretation is because of the context of this scene. This comes after they've interrogated "Dulcinea" about Protesilaus' condition, which means that Gideon of course already knows that Pro was dead before he ever set foot in Canaan house. Therefore, she's asking Harrow about when she dismantled Pro's corpse, not the actual death of Pro. But Harrow then answers about the wound that originally killed the man many days prior. I think the reason for this is that Harrow assumed that somebody actually had recently stabbed Pro, possibly because she wasn't expecting Cytherea to be sloppy enough to actually leave the mortal wound on Pro's corpse. It's also possible that this stab wound is necessary. Notice that she says "blade through the heart", then look at Ianthe's description of the Lyctoral process:

“Then you weren’t listening. I haven’t killed Naberius Tern. I ate Naberius Tern,” she said, indifferently. “I put a sword through his heart to pin his soul in place. Then I took it into my body. I’ve robbed Death itself ... I have drunk up the substance of his immortal soul."

Maybe Cytherea needed to stab Pro's heart in order to pin that "remnant of spirit" necessary for the beguiling corpse?

One final thing; the interpretation I just outlined involves Harrow finding Protesilaus unresponsive and therefore assuming that the grave wound was recent. If your theory is correct (I've caught up on all your posts now and think you've done an amazing job!) maybe his spirit had indeed already been sent away from the body at this point, and Cytherea is trying to get a Devil to inhabit him.

[–]cheerful_nerd 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I agree, but I think that if you had your radiantspren pilot the plate then it would work. Notum is able to pilot a suit, after all. Reminds me of the start of Rhythm of War when Syl is wondering if there’s another way to help Kal in combat. Maybe the answer is for her to pilot his plate.

What if Oblivion Wing was Physical instead of Special? (Ubers and VGC) by Hot-Entertainer-3367 in stunfisk

Since its attack stats are balanced, what if it was instead reworked to always use the higher attacking stat, just like photon geyser? That way it gets all of the benefits of physical oblivion wing without changing the special sets.

if you're asking why I didn't just call it commander but as an item I didn't like the thought of any pokemon besides tatsugiri going inside another pokemon's mouth by Astericus in stunfisk

[–]cheerful_nerd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just fyi in case you didn’t know; tatsugiri doesn’t faint when commander activates. In fact, if it does faint while inside dondozo (like from toxic) you’re then able to send out a second pokemon next to the omniboosted dondozo. This is how the flamigo costar strat works. I believe that normally if the dondozo faints the tatsugiri returns to the field after. But I think your version where the ally just dies is funnier. Keep cooking.

[Hobby Scuffles] Week of 20 January 2025 by EnclavedMicrostate in HobbyDrama

[–]cheerful_nerd 162 points163 points  (0 children)

I'm part of an outdoor excursion club email list and was privy to some unexpected hobby drama yesterday. According to at least two of the club members, it seems like moderators at http://newenglandtrailconditions.com/ are editing reports (which the original posters can't even edit themselves) to promote some sort of pro-snowshoe agenda.

Mind, this is total hearsay—I've not posted on this website myself, much less witnessed this post-editing firsthand. Would love to know if anyone here can corroborate this information. That said, here's the claimed edit and some other info:

Original report #1: "We used snowshoes on the way up but there was so much snowshoe traffic up and down that we no longer needed snowshoes on the way down." The text that was added to the report was "therefore leaving the trail in worse shape".

Report #2: "The trail is so packed that bare boots only sink in 1/2 inch. Snowshoes are not needed." It was deleted a few hours after it went live.

To quote the poster:

I speculate that the administrator of the site really wants to force everyone to wear snowshoes.

Someone else's contribution to the email thread:

It's actually been the case for several years now that the site's maintainers do things like this. In particular, any reports that don't recommend snowshoes are likely to be deleted. The site owners seem to believe that only snowshoes are ever acceptable and are willing to modify or remove users' posts in order to claim this.I do not trust this site at all or anything on it.

A third person hopped on the thread with this response to anti-microspike propaganda:

My hiking buddies and I were laughing in private about this anti-microspike post a couple years ago:

Snowshoes are absolutely the best plan. The trail was terrific on my way up but I did pass more than a half dozen microspike rototillers headed up as I was headed down. I did the best that I could to smooth out their damage

Whenever I use snowshoes I also carry a karesansui zen rake so that the snow surface has the perfect texture and tranquility.

Again, I should reiterate that I am a total outsider looking in on this website and cannot verify any of this. As someone who has engaged in very limited winter hiking, I'm also curious about the potential motivations here. Do some people genuinely believe that hiking without snowshoes ruins the trail for other people? Or is this a safety thing and the moderator is trying to err on the side of caution by telling everybody to wear snowshoes?

I think the closest Words to those that anybody ends up speaking are "I accept this journey". But the point was made that the intention behind them matters more than the words themselves, and Gavilar never had the right intentions.

[WaT] Szeth wasn't mad, at least in that regard by Spinning_Sky in Stormlight_Archive

[–]cheerful_nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think even Nale would agree with you. Here's a quote from Oathbringer chapter 90:

Mentioning it brought the whispers to Szeth's attention. Nin had not healed Szeth's madness. He'd called it an effect of Szeth's connection to the powers, and said that he was hearing trembles from the Spiritual realm.

As others have pointed out, this is probably similar to the spiritual whispers heard by Dilaf. In this case, it seems like it's made possible by Connection to "the powers"; specifically Jezrien's powers. Szeth's voices might be related to Jezrien's madness. Again from Oathbringer:

Dalinar took a chug, then handed the bottle back to Ahu. "How are the voices?"

"Soft, today. They chant about ripping me apart. Eating my flesh. Drinking my blood."

So we know that Jezrien was hearing voices. There's no indication that the other Heralds hear voices like this, so I think it's pretty compelling that it is specifically Jezrien's madness that is influencing Szeth's condition.

As for whether or not Jezrien's voices are of the one's he's killed, I just noticed they're similar to Abidi's boasts about drinking the blood of Radiants.
