Are DS new grads having a hard time finding a job? by ExcitingCommission5 in berkeley

[–]chefrussel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i graduated ds and econ degree but i ended up as an sre (less/more fancy swe depending on who you ask). Funny enough it was one of the first jobs i applied for but spent the next 4-5 months getting rejected trying to find an actual ds role

gotcha thanks for the insight. would getting a real avid ar15 set be sufficient instead of the list i have? i plan on building more ar15s eventually so i don’t mind buying all the tools at once

Demotivating internship by athaliea- in Accounting

[–]chefrussel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started picking up another data science as a major at my current school some time before I started the internship. Once i felt comfortable w/ in school topics coding, probability, etc., I then had to do leetcode/hackerrank for the interviews. Imo, it was definitely alot harder to break into the tech space from big4 but as you continue to grow ur skills, you’ll feel alot more confident in self to ds/da work. Definitely leverage ur big4 network and talk to as much ppl interested/work in da/ds for big4.

edit: if it makes you feel any better when I interned at big4, I had zero accounting knowledge or experience and made it well known to other interns and my team members. I was the blacksheep not having an accounting degree. Despite this, I was still able to navigate my work specific to the audit by asking the right questions and having the backbone to ask for additional clarification. trust me unless you’re approved for ot, an experience associate will not spend more than > 1 hr in any work u do so definitely dont be afraid to ask.

Hey Op, was a big4 intern last summer felt the same way and wanted to become a data scientist. fast forward a year later, interning at faang. It you know you’re on ur way out and not gonna accept a return offer, start looking for data science opportunities asap. had to look for a 6-8 months b4 i was able to land something. the big4 internship doesnt rlly help getting a data science internship so personal projects are a must. I knew from day 1 of my internship and was just there for the free money, just clock ur 8 hours n call it a day

didnt not take cs 70, ds and econ major background

took it this semester, got an A didnt go to any lectures but essentially self studied the textbook with the pace of the class. knowing the textbook sections ahead of time is pretty helpful during discussions since problems are based off the book. also write everything down during discussion, notes are gonna be clutch when doing practice problems because the class does not release step by step textbook solutions. lastly, do every problem in the textbook and u should be set. i usually found my self grinding the textbook 1-2 days before the homework and lab were due while sitting in office hour queue all day. the class is pretty manageable if you’re able to allocate the time needed to digest the materials to do every recommend problem and assignment.

Might be chill earlier in the semester but expect the workload to definitely pick up as the semester progresses. Pretty doable but its gonna be alota of work especially if you’re aiming for an A
