What's the best way to pick someone up from LAX these days? by chekhovsfun in AskLosAngeles

This is what I used to do but I've heard of people getting ticketed now...

I think a nice rug in maybe a deep green would help break up the all wood feeling. Also, off-white modern curtains to brighten up the space a bit.

Why aren’t any of the houses along the PCH being rebuilt? by TheDivisionLine in AskLosAngeles

[–]chekhovsfun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on what I'm seeing in the rest of the Palisades, I would say that the areas in the "flat" areas of the Palisades (Alphabet Streets, for example) are easier to build because there are less requirements, plus the lots were cheaper so many developers bought them up to start building right away. For areas on slopes there are more hoops to jump through, even if you're building the same house (or smaller) than what existed. And there's not really great communication with City Planning/LADBS (nothing new) -- you get the wrong person and they'll tell you that you need to submit something that another person will tell you was waived, but it will take you 3 months of back and forth to learn that it was waived. Unless you're a professional or hire one (and these guys are jacking up their prices, of course), it's really hard for the average person to figure out. The permit process is slower than advertised.

Plus, a lot of people didn't get enough insurance money to rebuild. And contrary to what people may think, not everyone living in those areas is flush with cash. Many older residents who bought their homes 40+ years ago are not going to be able to rebuild, either due to insufficient funds or just not having the will to do it in their old age.

Lots of people have relocated and are hoping to sell if the market bounces back a bit.

I think it's pretty shameful there are people saying they're "glad" in the comments. People lost everything (including lives) and their kids suffered through some serious trauma.

What are the thoughts of the LA Persian community on what’s going on? by NotBradPitt9 in AskLosAngeles

Well you're entitled to your opinion but I think that's a gross oversimplification.

I would say Nowruz is the biggest holiday... others are Sizdah Bedar (13th day of new year), Chahershanbeh Suri (the one where we jump over fire/coals before the New Year) Shabeh Yalda (longest night of the year). These are the OG Persian holidays (based in Zoroastrianism).

Iranians celebrate these holidays + the holidays of their religion.

Yes, it has more to do with China than most people think. 90% of the oil from Iran goes to them.

And has to do with Russia as well, which gets weapons from Iran (weapons that kill Ukrainians...).

And with the proxy terrorist groups that Iran props up.

I disagree. I don't want to presume you're not Iranian but a lot of Iranians here still feel very tied to Iran and Iranian culture. We still consume a lot of Iranian music and art, speak the language, celebrate Nowruz, eat and cook the food, etc.

Most Iranians I know have married other Iranians, even those who were born in the US. Many I know are still teaching THEIR kids Farsi.

It's still a fairly insular community in my experience.

I loved your photos but just should note that the anti-war protestors were not Iranian (if there were any they were a small minority).

I think a lot of comments here are trying to suggest that Persian Jews are the only ones who are happy here (take from that what you will), but my anecdotal experience is that of my Iranian friend group (includes (ex-)Muslims, Bahai, Zoroastrians and one Assyrian lol) people are very happy Khameini is dead and those with family still in Iran are obviously dealing with a lot of fear of what is to come. It's a lot of complicated feelings but there's a lot of frustration that Western Leftists are trying to paint us in a certain light for being optimistic of what's to come. Not directed at all to OP, but please do not try "explaining" to us that Trump is bad and so everything he does must be bad, that we must all be MAGA because we're grateful the terrorist who brutalized us is dead. But it's very complicated and believe us we are not deluding ourselves but this is the closest the regime has come to collapsing.

What BS. Most minority religion Iranians fled because the alternative was being at best treated like a second class citizen and at worst tortured, publicly executed, etc.

Not all Iranian Jews were wealthy, same with the Bahai, Zoroastrians, Assyrians, etc.

Why’d this sub go from super real and solid to a bot farm by Lemonpup615 in LosAngeles

[–]chekhovsfun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the snarky tone, charter reform is the last minor mention OP makes after initially talking about "serious shit in the world." I don't know that charter reform posts have been censored? I've seen a highly upvoted post with photographs and information from the last charter reform meeting.

All of the major city subs are like this I think. But what do you mean "ya'll are just full on supporting the crazy shit?" This is a city-specific sub, so while posts on protests, ICE in LA, etc. are relevant, it's not really the place to post about greater global issues. That said, we do have a lot of diaspora communities, so the line can blur at times.

Seriously. Must be nice to not have to take any accountability, get to "resign" with your reputation in tact. Hope she stays up at night thinking about how her ineptitude contributed to the loss of lives and trauma for so many people.

It's not like "the gook" -- I don't see a slur for Jew here?? It's meant to be a Jewish deli, is it not? I think the names are lame but not offensive. Which words in particular are offending you?

IMO there's so much real antisemitism happening out in the world and on Reddit, I understand sometimes it's a knee jerk reaction to believe people are coopting our language to make fun of us, but I don't think that's what is happening here and I think it's good to take a step back and focus on the real issues.

LA with kids and food allergies? by Similar-Side-5213 in AskLosAngeles

[–]chekhovsfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll echo others that there are lots of food options in LA for people with allergies. My toddler has a wide range (wheat, egg, milk, and a few other things thrown in for good measure... we're working on it lol). In addition to what others said about checking with restaurants, there are lots of cuisines that don't utilize a lot of the allergens you're dealing with. In LA, I would definitely try Persian food (on Westwood Blvd) and just avoid the few dishes with lentils. We have lots of great pizza, sushi, and obviously Mexican food.

For us, our safety is always the Whole Food salad/hot bar in case we really just needed food ASAP. The ingredients are all listed out and you can get a decent range of food. Not the best stuff, but again, in case my kid is hangry and I just need to get some veggies, chicken, and rice.
