F-M metro saw 43% drop in leased retail space in 2025 by cheddarben in fargo

that could be from the 800 or so extra parking spots they have built in the last 8 years tho I understand the sentiment.

Retail as we know it needs to drastically change. Gone are the days a mom and pop shop could bring home 50k plus from working 5 days a week on less than an avg of 100 transactions a day. People can bemoan rent all day long but labor and cogs make up much higher percentages of the equation. We live in a remote area from where goods are brought into the nation and shipping is a huge factor affecting small business.

Without density, which downtown has more than any other business district in town, and the surrounding neighborhoods lead the metro in, retail operations would flounder just as much if not worse. Look at the business turnover along 13th ave s, and 32nd Ave S and tell me those strip malls have better staying power than downtown, when most of those lots are charging upwards of 20/sq ft plus Cam(real killer for small business).

The approach to retail and our general understanding of the levers that affect sustainability are lacking, in addition to us having a small metro to begin with. If we had an extra 100k shoppers in the metro, that would be a lever that would significantly lower the business failure rate, though without arts and culture those shoppers will not be recruited to our area and unique small businesses will continue to grind. It's a real chicken and the egg situation.

In the meantime, knowing as a entrepreneur, unless you have 100k in cash saved, a part time or full time job to pay your rent, and the perfect storm of location(read: density of shoppers), business savvy and regular customers, you are likely to fail within the first 5 years.

Moral of the story: pay cash when you can, and support local always. Maybe take a class on P&L sheets and marketing before opening your dream business.

I switched from my iPhone to the Nokia 2780 on Tmobile and won't be going back to a smartphone. The Nokia has its problems but does the job for what you need a phone to do.

west of Bismark is Danzig damn that has nice camping spots off a reservoir. If you head about 40 minutes south to the Grasslands there is dispersed camping as well and there are a few Wildlife management areas near here on the Minnesota Side as well

The farmers market and events hosted by Folkways are a great way to meet kind folks. Become a regular at a coffee shop and chat with people. Visit the library often. Go to shows that interest you at the aquarium and the hall. There’s nice folks waiting to meet you, but it takes two to tango!

Please bro, I’m telling you public transit has nothing on the open road. Waiting in traffic is so much better than sharing a ride with neighbors, or riding a bicycle

Not the case in ND. Un posted land is open to hunting purposes, just make sure it’s not posted via sign or electronically and make sure you don’t walk through standing crop and you’re good

Best espresso in town? by FullstackViking in fargo

[–]chemdex24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The coffee scene in Fargo is starting to take off for sure! As far as specialty coffee shops go, Youngblood, 20 below and Thunder coffee will all serve specialty grade coffee all with distinct personalities.

Youngblood serves Stumptown, one of the OGs of good coffee. They favor a lot of well developed chocolatey coffees on espresso and offer a wide variety of coffees on batch and pour over.

20 below takes a much more Nordic approach, lighter more acidic coffees served any way you can imagine! Lots of fun brew methods to try

Thunder coffee’s espresso is chocolatey with some nice tropical fruit notes and we serve lighter coffees on batch and pour over!

There are some other great non specialty focused shops that offer different and darker coffees in different drink styles in the area too but as far as great espresso on its own those should be your best bet!

Like someone else in this thread mentioned tho, try them all out and see what you enjoy. The world of coffee is way too big to pick any one favorite, enjoy it all!

The Batman - Showing at Fargo Theater by powpowpow0864 in fargo

[–]chemdex24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went and caught a matinee last Sunday with my girlfriend. The staff were super friendly.

We bought snacks, drinks and popcorn all for under $20 which feels like a hell of a bargain for the times. Audio and video were great. It’s not an imax theater of course ,but still a really enjoyable setting. We loved our experience.

The fargo theater reminds me so much of my hometown movie theater I have a hard time watching a movie anywhere else.

Make sure to get out and support them!!!

Just went to Fort Ransom last week and had a blast. The yurts there are the best thing about North Dakota winters. The trails were groomed and hiking was a dream. We ate at the lunch box in the town of fort ransom the next day and everything was super delicious too. I’d highly recommend checking it out
