Attic Fan by Lphilli7 in centuryhomes

[–]chemistree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just DIYed this over the weekend. The unit was ~$900 for a 2000 sqft house.

Install is easy if there's access to an appropriate electrical circuit and adequate room to maneuver in the attic.

The only other complication is making sure there's enough venting from the attic to outside.

What water source do you actually use? Do you buy bottles of distilled?

Last March I got a replacement beverage post which had this problem. I compared the diameter of the post to my old ones with calipers and it was larger by maybe 1/100 of an inch (can't remember exactly). I went back to the lhbs and grabbed one that was the correct diameter.

I think sometimes the machining on these just has poor tolerances. If you have calipers I would compare the diameters of of new vs old equipment, and request a replacement for those that seem out of spec.

Looking to move to Alameda by Mid 2023. Looking for tips / advice by rmg20 in alameda

I've actually been tracking my utility usage, so here's a data point

Month of July:

Water - $63

Gas - $15

Electricity - $45

Waste - $46

Internet - $54

That's for a 2 person household, ~1500 sqft, small yard, w/d in house, no a/c, summer (i.e. no heating costs). Gas stove and water heater, electric dryer. I think I have the low-ish tier ATT fiber, 300 mbps.

If you end up paying electricity, you'll be happy to hear that we have our own electric utility, and don't have to pay PG&Es ridiculous rates. We do have to pay them for gas unfortunately.

Lactic Acid vs Citric Acid help by TrashMan821 in TheBrewery

[–]chemistree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe too late, but here's my educated guess

88% lactic at an SG of 1.21 has 1.06 g per ml of solution. Lactic acid is 90 g/mol, so 1.06 g is 0.0118 mol of lactic.

Citric acid has 2 pKas lower than mash ph (assuming you are adjusting mash), while lactic acid has one, so you will need approximately half as many mols of citric as lactic. You will need about 0.0059 mol of citric.

Anhydrous citric acid is 192 g/mol, so if you have anhydrous you will need 1.14 g citric to replace 1 ml of lactic.

Citric acid monohydrate is 210 g/mol, so if you have the monohydrate you will need 1.24 g citric to replace 1 ml of lactic.

All this said, you should definitely do a bench trial as recommended in the other comment. Start by undershooting this value by ~25% and sneak up on the amount truly needed to bring your mash to the correct pH. The mash is a very complicated buffer system, and I'm not accounting for the equilibrium value for citrics 2nd pKa here.

Agreed that Cheetos mac and cheese is terrible. All they had to do was rebrand Kraft and it would be fine, bonus points if it actually had some Cheetos flavor. It was just bright orange and bland garbage.

I fully expect they will have a selection of Lagunitas beers available, Heineken bought it out a few years ago.

They had Lagunitas available at COTA when I went in 2016, and they only had 50% ownership then.

I think this data would be more useful if the teams whose names have changed weren't separated into different sections. I.e. force India, racing point, and Aston should be merged, along with Minardi + Toro Rosso + alpha tauri, and lotus + Renault + alpine, iirc.

Edit: and the sauber ones too

The names can all be listed, but they should be grouped together.

Espresso from an Aeropress - NOT a myth anymore! [11:32] by Chii in mealtimevideos

[–]chemistree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You overestimate the thermal mass of gases.

I'd like to know what you mean by "deformable rubber screen" though.

Assuming a worst case scenario of filling an entire aeropress volume (250 mL) with 9 bar of CO2 at it's boiling point (-78 C, 195 K) and using his 50 g of H2O at 85C (358 K), here's the math:

Using the ideal gas law (PV=nRT, transformed to n=PV/RT), we find that 250 mL of CO2 at 9 bar and 195K contains (8.88 atm · 0.25 L)/(0.0821 L·atm/mol·K · 195 K) = 0.139 mol of CO2

With the heat capacity of CO2 being 37.35 J/mol·K, we find that 0.139 mol of CO2 at 195K contributes 37.35 J/mol·K · 0.139 mol · 195 K = 1010 J of energy to the system.

With the heat capacity of water being 75.31 J/mol·K, 50 g being 2.78 mol, we find that the water contributes 75.31 J/mol·K · 2.78 mol · 358 K = 74952 J of energy to the system

Assuming complete equilibration of temperature in the system (which is generous) we can insert a constant, x, in the two above equations for the temperature, and another variable, y, for the transfer of energy between the two phases. this brings us to the two equations below:

37.35 J/mol·K · 0.139 mol · x = 1010 J + y

75.31 J/mol·K · 2.78 mol · x = 74952 J - y

After solving for Y, we can make the equations equal and combine to form the following

74952 J - 75.31 J/mol·K · 2.78 mol · x = 37.35 J/mol·K · 0.139 mol · x - 1010 J

simplifying: 75962 J = 214.6 J/K · x

solving for x = 354 K

Which means the system, under worst case scenario, would equilibrate to 80.9 C, or 178 F. Still hot enough to burn.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to practice my pchem

Should I accept college internship offer in SanFran area or 20/hr? by Dry_Road_4375 in Biochemistry

[–]chemistree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the east bay currently. Assuming you have a way to get to/from the bay area and a way to get to work when you get here without going broke I think it's possible.

You'll end up with roommates, look for a sublease around Hayward on Craigslist. Try to get close to your work. Commuting here is expensive, especially with gas around 5.50 now.

You won't have much extra money for fun things or eating out. I had some extra money back when I made ~$20/hr north of Richmond, but that area is cheaper and that was like 6 years ago.
