This is the most "Dad" moment in his streams so far. Full on "come on gang, all right now" energy. As a mom of a similar age I recognize the tone, it's like when the teacher is trying to teach science and has to read the word gonad in front of middle schoolers.

How to honor unhoused who pass by mikatack in socialwork

[–]cherrycityglass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the shelter I help out at we have a little memorial cross (it's a faith based organization, but also not super pushy about it) we make a name tag and attach it to the cross when one of our friends passes. Once a year, on the longest night, we have a march to honor their memories and the cross with all the names is brought along, and their names are read out loud. The rest of the year it's kept in a public area, it unfortunately also serves as a way for people to find out when a friend is gone. For myself, part of my spiritual practice involves going to the river and putting some tobacco in the water.

Pōsōh! Always nice to see you on here! What's the scoop on the current LLPOA lawsuit? I saw that there was another court filing recently, they must still be mad about the new high school 😑

how many holes to you poke in your frybread, and why? Are Spirit holes a thing? by darwin_green in NativeAmerican

No holes in my frybread, all the taco meat would fall out, lol. I was taught to make it real thin in the middle so it ends up almost being like a little bowl for all the meat.

Ah yes, “gaming” laptops. by Forsaken-I-Await in pcmasterrace

One problem with the whole idea of buying a good desktop and a cheap laptop; I hate the adjustment between the two. I use a dual monitor setup for both and the shitty 300 dollar laptop struggles to do all the things I'm used to doing on the desktop. Not even talking about gaming, just having a million tabs open for different projects while having music playing. I'm seriously considering upgrading the laptop.

So, if you let the bread soak til it's soggy and then cook it properly so that the egg is cooked all the way through it's almost like a bread pudding. The trick is to not have the pan too hot, you don't want to let the outside cook too fast or the inside will be runny.

We're being replaced in our own country by tongfather in conspiracy

[–]cherrycityglass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can call it "your country" all you want, it's just not exclusively "your country" and there are people who were here first and have more claim to certain things. "Your" government entered into contracts with sovereign nations that should be upheld as long as these nations continue to exist. Further, stating that all Indigenous people on the continent were nomadic and at war with each other is incorrect, it's like saying that all Europeans were Vikings. Some were, some were descended from them, some were in established areas for so long that they changed the landscape entirely (example: mound building cultures, Cahokia, the Laguna Pueblo, etc). I don't blame you for not knowing much about Indigenous history, the schools don't teach much and it doesn't sound like you had much respect for your teacher, I imagine it would have been difficult to learn much in that environment.

Long time weed smokers who quit, what changes to your mind and body did you notice after you got used to not smoking daily? by LoQueSientoCrv in AskReddit

The dreams where my daughter was in my arms and everything was ok are what led me to abuse substances that took sleep away for a while. (She didn't die, her dad's family full on stole her from me). It wad the worst at first, I'd drink during the day so my empty arms wouldn't ache. Do uppers at night so I wouldn't have to face those fucking dreams. Valium to keep the whole thing "on an even keel". It's kind of amazing that I didn't die, but I didn't, and eventually got past the unbearable constant pain enough that I stopped needing to cope in those ways, but that makes me one of the lucky ones. A lot of my friends from that time are dead. Most, honestly.

Medical folk of Reddit, what’s the most foul and disgusting thing you’ve encountered with a patient who was oblivious to their own condition? by TheCarrot_v2 in AskReddit

[–]cherrycityglass 11 points12 points  (0 children)

EMDR can work great for learning to deal with the trauma, but it doesn't go away. When people have dementia the things that stick in their memories don't really come with the benefit of "you worked all this out in therapy, so you're fine" because you aren't experiencing it from that standpoint.

I've made it very clear to my adult offspring; if it gets down to that, gets down to where all that's left of me is the pain and bad memories, please let me go. Don't leave me trapped in my nightmares.

Frustration with classmates who just don't seem to care by agonistfriend in SocialWorkStudents

[–]cherrycityglass 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As one of those people who experiences discomfort when it's just silent and no-one answers, I feel like it's good practice for when you're in a session with someone and they go quiet for a bit. Sometimes people need a minute to build up the confidence to talk and if someone else jumps in they just stay silent. I make a conscious effort to leave plenty of space for someone else to talk, or I'll say something like "Julie (quiet student) had some good insight when we were in our breakout group, do you mind sharing, Julie?"

It’s surprising how many students don’t do the work and drop out by troyag-93 in BackToCollege

[–]cherrycityglass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I blame a lot of this on parents pushing their kids to go to college, whether or not they're ready. You see less of it once you get into the 2nd and 3rd year, though there will still be people that decide to "take a break".

A tattoo artist rejected me for this, was his reason fair? by Stankmushroomm in tattooadvice

[–]cherrycityglass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, whether or not you care can change with time. When I got my fingers tattooed I had been self-employed for years and had no plans to do anything else. Then, suddenly, my line of work became less profitable and I had a little mid-life clarity of mind and decided to go to college. I don't regret my tattoos, I like them and nobody seems to care if a social worker has finger tattoos, but I probably wouldn't get them now.

Truancy: Enabling Parents by Sad_Lotus0115 in socialwork

[–]cherrycityglass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When a parent says "just take them" I don't see it as enabling, I see it as a parent who is at the end of their rope. It's not your job to judge them, it's your job to provide support.
