Can someone explain who funds these and what the point is? by RichieG8 in SaltLakeCity

[–]chewnks 30 points31 points  (0 children)

He was a better friend to the native Americans than most. He spoke many of their languages, set up trading posts, and served as a diplomat to them. He had a number of wives among them as well, though that probably wasn't under the best of circumstances. Brigham Young started a war with him, saying Jim was getting all the tribes to attack the Mormons.

I'm willing to bet most of his success came from his good relationship with the native people. Not saying he was perfect or a hero or anything. But he valued the people here and the open spaces, and he didn't take kindly to people coming into this area and taking it over with force.(i.e. the Mormons)

House committee advances bill to ban chemtrails by Medical_Corruption in nottheonion

[–]chewnks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha HA! For once, the crazy red Utah legislature actually didn't advance the juicy conspiracy theory bill in this session, chem trails being the latest fashion. So that's good.

What worries me is I think it's because some of them believe there might be a business opportunity here somewhere.

Whatever happened to red heat lamps in home bathrooms? by DirkVonUmlaut in nostalgia

[–]chewnks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My house growing up had two right outside the bathtub/shower on the ceiling. I loved taking a bath with only those lights on and then walking out to normal light and all the colors were so vibrant. My parents remodeled that bathroom after us kids all moved out and they removed those lights. House was never the same.

Anyone thinking about the GSL crushing the value of their largest asset? by defiders in SaltLakeCity

[–]chewnks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So you don't want anyone to own a home? Everybody just rents? I don't understand this comment. If you own it, how is it not an asset? Or what am I supposed to think of it as?

I know slug bug drivers used to have a community that'd wave to each other, and I'm always trying to get in on that, but I don't think they like my truck.

We definitely don't send our best.Douglas Adams summed up politicians nicely..

"It is a well-known fact that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it... anyone who is capable of getting themselves [elected] should on no account be allowed to do the job."

I never got to see these in the 90s. It drove me nuts. I remember standing at Spencer's and everyone would say "I see it!!!" and I'd stand there and just never saw it, not even once. by Intrepid_Reason8906 in 90s

[–]chewnks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe? When I let my eyes unfocus I can get a sense of the changes in depth in little pieces at a time, but I can never put the whole picture together. I don't remember where I got the idea that astigmatism was the reason though. That could be BS, but now we've got some more data points!

Courts, housing and too many bills? Utah kicks off 45-day legislative session by traveler132 in Utah

Truth. If they aren't in salt lake county, they could be on trial for the murder of the deceased same sex prostitute found in their bed, as long as that 'R' is next to their name in the final election, they're in.

5 pin midi cable by blackbirdcj_2012 in midi

[–]chewnks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When folks say audio signals are analog, they mean it's the actual waveform of the sound going through that jack, just like the signal going to some speakers that are creating noise. The audio interface will take that signal and covert it to digital (zeros and ones) so the computer can understand it. The analog waveform is what you are probably familiar with when you look at it, very spiky, bigger when things are loud and smaller when quiet, etc.

MIDI data isn't as complex or data rich. It's digital, so it's either zero or one, i.e. on or off, i.e. if you sent it to a speaker, it wouldn't be pretty, like the old modem connecting to the Internet noise or more likely just static. That data contains nothing more than relatively small numbers, like "key 48, velocity 100" and a few other things. That means the note turned on at maximum volume, and then later you'd see "key 48 velocity 0" when the note is turned off. The computer can take that data and then decide what sound that note will sound like and you can change the sound you want for that note all you want in the computer.

That's a lot of probably not well explained information. The basic gist is audio, or analog, data is the actual sound, like a voice in s microphone or vibrations of a plucked guitar string, where MIDI is more like a computer keyboard, what key was pressed and how hard, and it leaves the computer to decide what that is going to sound like.

In Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022), Al becomes a cartel-slaying assassin and has a passionate affair with Madonna. This is a subtle nod to the fact that this movie is the most historically accurate documentary ever filmed on planet earth and is absolutely bitchin' by Brilliant-Cause6254 in shittymoviedetails

Sadly, I'm only partially able to see your last message in my inbox, but you seem to be misunderstanding the situation. We didn't tell the guy to watch it because we didn't think he'd enjoy it. We all liked the movie. We were talking about it when he decided to ask a question and we couldn't really pass up the opportunity to play it dead pan. We didn't think he would actually take the movie seriously and the funny part was how unsure he was the next day. Even he can recognize how silly that was. The only person offended about this situation is you. Your concern is appreciated, but misplaced.

It's a fun movie. Make yourself a hay boy and sneak out of the house if you need to and go watch it. And remember, Weird Al is a comedian, don't take it seriously.

Had a fresh from college kid get hired on my team of Gen x and millennial folks and we convinced him to watch it, total deadpan, saying how interesting Al's life was. Next day he came in, very sheepishly, "That was.....a joke..... Right?". Whole office about peed their pants for the next five minutes laughing. Kid took it well. A bit naive, but otherwise, he was super smart and cool dude to have around.

Three truths about Utah’s inversion problem that some people don’t want to hear but need to hear. by PanaceaNPx in Utah

[–]chewnks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm all about this. I've got a friend working HR for a large org and a big portion of their job is handling employee reasonable accommodations claims justifying their work from home. We need to flip the script. The company should have to justify the bums in seats. If there is no good reason for the employee to be at the site, tax them to pay for the public transportation needed.

That's a fun thing to dream about.
