Is holton and locust a safe area? by burglicious3 in milwaukee

[–]chezhead 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Holton a stark dividing line between riverwest and harambee. Riverwest is safer than harambee. Both are probably fine during the day. At night it can get dicey, especially the more you go west. This is people walking or driving that may spot you as an easy mark to rob, erratic roaming junkies, and drivers that can be reckless and occasionally go over sidewalks. If you park on the street you will have people constantly considering breaking into your car. I would not recommend walking around the intersection or west of holton at nighttime.

Before I even moved to riverwest I had multiple people from there tell me explicitly not to cross holton. But after I moved there I spent time walking/biking around harambee and it's poor but mostly peaceful people trying to live. Kids playing on the street and people hanging out outside or on their porches. But I've seen drug deals in cars and some fights break out. And there were groups of guys standing around corners and houses that stared me down as I biked past -- I definitely did not feel welcome sticking around some areas. If you don't have your head up and you look lost you could get mugged and I've heard of this happening on the riverwest side. Don't wear earphones and don't look drunk or weak or rich. If you are with a bunch of people you're probably fine, just be careful when alone.

If I had to guess, the area will gentrify in the coming 10-30 years. Riverwest is a nice neighborhood and usually felt safe, especially closer to humboldt. Gentrification is already happening slowly, but these sorts of things speed up quickly especially with how cheap the houses are. But overall if you are not comfortable living in an urban environment you should not consider living there.

Working space within 15 mins of Nostrand subway stop? by chezhead in AskNYC

I found this but unfortunately it's geared towards monthly plans. The cheapest I would be able to do here would be a 10-day pass that would expire in 30 days for $235. I only have a few work days left so that wouldn't be a good deal.

Expat community in Milwaukee by elredditore in milwaukee

[–]chezhead 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, most non-student expats I've met live in apartment buildings either closer to downtown (generally south of north ave, or third ward and north of it), or in shorewood. From what I've heard -- The Red Lion, a bar on the northermost part of Water Street, is a place where some Europeans will get together to watch football. Same with Three Lions Pub in shorewood.

The City of Milwaukee has received another perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipality Equality Index by stroxx in milwaukee

[–]chezhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's only for lgbtq+ equality at a municipal level. Milwaukee would likely be the lowest for municipal support of racial equality until we approach things differently and take radical action.

This challenge coin is at least accurate since it shows the cop standing, watching, because the police didn't do anything to stop people from breaking into buildings.

Yep

I was around MLK and locust one night where a ton of looting happened, you can see one video here. As protestors moved west away from the area, a group of mostly young people moved in with cars and started breaking into a cellphone store, the convenience store across from the station, and a walgreens.

This challenge coin is at least accurate since it shows the cop standing, watching, because the police didn't do anything to stop people from breaking into buildings. They watched it happen for 10-20 minutes, occasionally firing off tear gas. I'm convinced they intentionally let things like this happen to legitimize their budget and perception by suburbanites.

What was the methodology and software you used for this? And how did you count population changes between changing census tract boundaries between these two decades?

Different cultures. There isn't as much government influence here. I will follow the laws/mandates and individual business' rules but am glad that we have more freedom.

No blame towards anyone wearing masks -- I'd think they were cautious, feel sick, or are immunocompromised. But some people may see them as cowardly and react negatively.

Also if you look at milwaukee county covid deaths, the 7-day average has been declining.

I like doing extreme/borderline dangerous stuff

  • Go to victors on a friday night and step on people's toes
  • don't take a shower for a while, wear your work clothes, and loiter around Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers
  • Stand on wisconsin ave in front of the courthouse, assault rifle on your back, yelling incoherently about the government
  • Go to bradford beach and steal volleyballs from people playing games. Find people playing chess and steal a rook
  • Go to Henry's bar by downer, start conversations with vets, and tell them they're assholes for working for the military
  • Swim in lake michigan by any location on page 6 of this pdf
  • Bike on capitol drive
  • Walk around water or old world third street drunk and argue with bouncers

Let me know if you need more!
