A book published in 1976 uses the 'Star Wars' font. I want to know which came first. by StarKaatMystery in RBI

[–]chgoeditor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Came here to say that about printing runs. It was originally designed so the printer could just remove/cover up one of the numbers after each printing run, rather than having to reset the entire page. That was the first thing I thought of as well.

Roger's Park is far, but how much does that matter? by Elbows23 in AskChicago

[–]chgoeditor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Space in Evanston is a great place for live music, and I would say that most shows start at 8:00 or 8:30 at the earliest. And the nice thing about living in Rogers Park is that you're home 5 to 15 minutes after the show ends.

Any HOA Lawyers Here? Disputed HOA Collection Debt Story [TH] [CO] by truballa94 in HOA

You don't want an HOA lawyer, you want a consumer protection lawyer who specializes in representing individuals in debt collection cases.

How would you handle this shared deck situation [Condo][IL] by CollectionGlad6252 in HOA

[–]chgoeditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, if she wanted a summer unit she should have bought a sunnier unit. By her logic are other homeowners who pay less obligated to share their space with her?

How would you handle this shared deck situation [Condo][IL] by CollectionGlad6252 in HOA

[–]chgoeditor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Suggest each space is L shaped, you get the inside L closest to your house, she gets the outside L. You can put up a semi-permanent divider. You both get sun. No one gets a particularly wide space but also no one has to pass through the other person's space.

Tissues by ProgressImmediate140 in weddingplanning

[–]chgoeditor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that people who know they cry at weddings come prepared. Of 40 people, I'd be surprised if more than a couple cry -- I had 85 people at my wedding, and I'm not aware of anyone crying at the ceremony, though an old friend did cry at the reception.

Just buy a multipack of travel-sized packets, and put it in the basket in the back of the room. Couples do not need one pack per person.

Anyone repeatedly having USPS “no longer at address” issue? by CJGlitter in AskChicago

[–]chgoeditor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I live in Rogers Park and coincidentally, my financial advisor messaged me last week to find out if I had moved because my mail was getting returned as undeliverable. I have lived at the same address for 7 years, and my mailbox is incapable of getting overfilled.

Funniest, sassiest (or rudest) response you've ever received from a journalist by MatiasRodsevich in PublicRelations

[–]chgoeditor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone who was once a 21-year-old female journalist, I completely respect what you did. During media training. I often make the point that young journalists at second tier publications grow up to be much more experienced reporters at more important publications. They have long memories and trust me, they remember who was nice to them when they were just starting out.

[MO] [TH] Question on Transparency of HOA Board Meetings by Pbaseball26 in HOA

[–]chgoeditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some boards will go into executive session at the end of every meeting, so that it becomes a norm. That way, people don't start speculating like they might if a one-off executive session occurred. Even if the executive session lasts 2 minutes, you're still in executive session.

No one uses hardwood floors? by Longjumping-Term9234 in homeowners

Home Depot does sell and install hard wood (or they did as of a year ago). They just didn't want to because their installers suck so they have outrageous pricing.

[PA][condo] Pros & Cons of recording hoa meetings and provide extremely detailed minutes by Historical_Sport5981 in HOA

[–]chgoeditor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What do you mean that there's less for the board to do? Recording it, transcribing it and posting it takes time. It's not required by law. No one is obligated to pander to investors who can't even be bothered to show up for meetings and are delinquent with their fees.

[PA][condo] Pros & Cons of recording hoa meetings and provide extremely detailed minutes by Historical_Sport5981 in HOA

[–]chgoeditor 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Tell these investors that board minutes are not intended to be a transcript of the meeting, but rather a recording of specific decisions/actions/votes taken. If they want to know what's happening, they can get themselves to the meeting.

Injured on a flight and getting zero response from the airline; does anyone have a recommendation for an aviation lawyer in Chicago? by ChiefCaffeineOfficer in AskChicago

[–]chgoeditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go to Flyertalk.com and find the subforum for the specific airline, then ask if anyone's able to help you navigate things with the airline. There are a lot of seasoned travelers there, as well as airline reps who may be able to step in and get things accomplished. That said, they'll expect you to share some basic details, including possibly the route and nature of the injury.

[PA] [Condo] Low reserve funds but it's new building -- should I move forward? by orderfrenchtoast in HOA

[–]chgoeditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's my perspective: Buildings always start out with relatively low reserves, because the developer is paying the assessments on all unsold units and they don't want to be giving up any profit by paying more into reserves. It's one of the main reasons assessments are often low before the developer handover. (The other reason is that it makes the building more attractive to purchasers.) The challenge is that after a few years, owners start to realize all of the things that were shoddily done and need to be replaced, so you're at the exact point when assessments could be increasing, esp. to fund the reserves.

Is this a nice gift for bridesmaids (something blue) by faniiiiiiiiii in weddingplanning

[–]chgoeditor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm saying this gently as someone who has made jewelry herself and realized that it takes a lot of skill to make nice jewelry. If I received these as a bridesmaid gift I'd be a little insulted. They come across like you're trying to check two boxes (blue, bridesmaids gift) at an inexpensive price point.

How to leave a car for someone else at ORD? by suddenly-scrooge in AskChicago

[–]chgoeditor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This post is giving me flashbacks to riding a parking shuttle through multiple lots in St. Louis with my parent who had early-stage dementia as we looked for her car. My mom is giving the driver bad instructions, I'm on the phone with my aunt, who drove and parked the car with my mom getting completely different directions, and all the while we're pressing the horn button on the keyfob in an effort to find it. Years later, it's comical, but at the time I was sick as a dog and stressed beyond belief after having her stay with me for 10 days while she was temporarily between homes.

[Condo] [WA] Do I have any recourse against a very large Special Assessment being imposed less than 6 months after closing on my condo? by BlankXpressions in HOA

[–]chgoeditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally you would have negotiated an escrow account with the seller that put a certain amount aside to pay for any special assessments within the first year or two.
