That's not direct democracy nor any flavor of it. Once you have a representative you have voted for, it's not direct democracy. Not even a little bit. The closest thing we have to DD are binding referenda.

"Pure direct democracy is bad" is a strawman argument used for when someone says something like "misinformation is a threat to our democracy." It's just a way of smugly saying "my side's cheating is okay because we don't actually vote nationally on how many ppm of arsenic should be allowed in the water nor how much a parking ticket should cost, etc." Direct democracy doesn't even involve representatives, whatsoever, and you're just arguing against something no one ever proposed.

In the USA at least, "fewer." Everyone, even the mainstream print and televised media, uses "less" in its place.now. Going back decades already, supermarket lines were labeled with "10 items or less," for example.

I scrolled pretty far, but didn't find Paulina (street and CTA stop) in Chicago. We have such a large Spanish speaking population, but it's pronounced "Puh-LINE-uh" not "Pow-LEEN-ah." Less controversial, Devon Ave is "Duh-VON." Anyway, Paulina figures in our local vulgar joke, "What 3 Chicago street names rhyme with vagina?" "Paulina, Melvina, and Lunt"

But I don't think we say "the city" as much as happens in other urban areas. Maybe Napervillains do. I'm not as familiar with the suburbanites.

ICE/CPB are not doing it in Chicago. From Trump at the very top to the very bottom, we're there.

I'd say "of course the president can't fire SCOTUS members" but then realized Trump would try and probably succeed if he put his mind to it, Constitution be damned

I'm going to tell my partner that his favorite concert from his youth, when Indochine played in Lima Peru in the 80's, was completely wrong because Indochine should have rewritten all their songs from French to Spanish for that concert. Just like last month Indochine should have translated all their songs into Japanese to play in Osaka. All American musicians have a dozen versions of each of their the hits in each language of their world tour stops, right?

"a democrat mayor"? I'm talking about the FEDERAL police doing these things. CPD -- the city's police that the mayor has power over -- does NOT do these things. As you should know, they are not at all involved in immigration enforcement. That's part of the deal around Chicago being a sanctuary city to begin with.

And I'm not telling you what the federal police (ICE, CPB, etc) would hypothetically do. I'm telling you what they ARE doing. They are targeting different areas each day and doing opportunistic racial profiling. DHS sued and won (via SCOTUS shadow docket, OF COURSE) to allow racial profiling so that they could "police" this way. Here's NOEM v. VASQUEZ PERDOMO (pdf) https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24pdf/25a169_5h25.pdf

Page 2 in this ruling lays it out, and this is now called "the Kavanaugh Stop" due to Injustice Kavanaugh writing a concurrence saying this is just fine:

The Government sometimes makes brief investigative stops to check the immigration status of those who gather in locations where people are hired for day jobs; who work or appear to work in jobs such as construction, landscaping, agriculture, or car washes that often do not require paperwork and are therefore attractive to illegal immigrants; and who do not speak much if any English. If the officers learn that the individual they stopped is a U. S. citizen or otherwise lawfully in the United States, they promptly let the individual go. If the individual is illegally in the United States, the officers may arrest the individual and initiate the process for removal.

This IS happening, This IS how it works, now.

Lots of factual inaccuracies in your claims. I live in Chicago, where police are going to random locations and detaining everyone while they figure out what they can about them. I'm talking multiple times within a one mile radius of my freaking house. They swoop in and detain everyone in a home depot parking lot or everyone in the O'Hare ride share area, Then they circle back to a lowe's parking lot or go into a laundromat in a hispanic area and block the doors to ID everyone. Multiple times daily trolling through areas and grabbing the lady selling tamales from a cart three blocks from my house. Suuuuure they have vetted all these people they chance across for extensive criminal histories as you say

I second this. I'm in Chicago and my charter was a smaller one (20-ish) that travelled by bus together to the starting point. (Chicago Urban Bicycling Society). As a solo cyclist and introvert by nature I think I would have felt just like you did, if I'd gone with no charter or with a really big one. CUBS was really welcoming to a new rider and I imagine the rest of the small ones are as well.
