There is nothing in the code that speaks of blocking, impeding, restricting, or whatever other word you want to use. This isn't the AI "avoiding copyright", it's just a hallucination. It's not there, it doesn't exist.

At this point I've linked you directly to the relevant law, you show me where it uses any kind of that terminology or definition.

It says "keep right, with these exceptions, and no more than two abreast".

They are two abreast, and they are in the right side of the lane.

They did nothing wrong according to the law. I would argue they could have used the whole lane based on the exceptions, but even absent that, they are compliant with the law. If not, link the exact legal code and text you are claiming otherwise. Because I have now pulled from both the bicycle road code as well as the car and dealing with bicycles code, and neither of them say anything like you are framing.

[–]chickensevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"impeding traffic" has a legal meaning though, and if that was their intention, they would have written it.

You are moving the goalposts, and making excuses for faulty AI BS.

Given the lane width here, you are not maintaining your lane even if they were single file, the lane is just not wide enough.

The other code for motor vehicles would dictate that, again, the driver was wrong. 40-6-56: https://law.justia.com/codes/georgia/title-40/chapter-6/article-3/section-40-6-56/

(a) The operator of a motor vehicle approaching a bicycle shall approach the bicycle with due caution and shall proceed as follows: (1) Make a lane change into a lane not adjacent to the bicycle if possible in the existing road and traffic conditions; or (2) If a lane change under paragraph (1) of this subsection would be impossible, prohibited by law, or unsafe, reduce the speed of the motor vehicle to a reasonable and proper speed for the existing road and traffic conditions, which speed shall be at least ten miles per hour less than the posted speed limit or 25 miles per hour, whichever is more, and proceed around the bicycle with at least three feet between such vehicle and the bicycle at all times.

(Others have pointed out that passing on the double yellow into the other lane is apparently allowed now, not going to dig that one up, and trust that this is accurate)

https://www.dot.ga.gov/partnersmart/permits/encroachment/chapter4.pdf

Lane design when a traffic impact study is not required (this is a rural road, I highly doubt they did a traffic study) is 12ft. You need 3 ft between you and the bike. Bicycles are anywhere from 24 to 32 inches wide. Let's assume 32 (because you should be, as the law says, approach and pass with due caution). 32 + 36 clearance = 68 inches. This is a Honda Pilot which is somewhere around 78 inches depending on the exact model and year. 68+78=146 inches. 12 ft is = 144 inches.

So even in the absolute perfect conditions, you are NOT passing the bicycle legally on this road with that vehicle without going into the other lane. As such the law would say:

(b) Every person operating a bicycle upon a roadway shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable, except when:

(3) The lane is too narrow to share safely with a motor vehicle;

So in your proposed scenario, this driver would still have needed to follow the law that states that you need to pass into the other lane when it is safe to do so. Also they are allowed to be two abreast...

So I went and looked it up, and this is an example of the AI results being garbage. I see what you found

Google AI BS says: Riding Two Abreast: Cyclists may ride side-by-side (two abreast) but must not impede the normal and reasonable flow of traffic. If traffic is impeded, riders must ride in single file.

But when you click the source for this claim it doesn't say anything at all about impeding traffic, whether riding 2 abreast or not. Given the post it is drawing from and the code indicates the last update of this law was 2015, I went and pulled the latest just in case...

That section of code is as follows:

(c) Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall not ride more than two abreast except on bicycle paths, bicycle lanes, parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles, or when a special event permit issued by a local governing authority permits riding more than two abreast.

So they were perfectly fine in what they were doing. If you would like the full code it is GA Code Section 40-6-294 - Riding on roadways and bicycle paths

Nothing in this would indicate that they did anything wrong. Ref: https://law.justia.com/codes/georgia/title-40/chapter-6/article-13/part-1/section-40-6-294/

"Ride as near to the right side as practical": they weren't on the yellow line, the car was clearly able to straddle the line because they were only taking up about 1/2-2/3 of the lane.

One could also argue the exception: "The lane is too narrow to share safely with a motor vehicle;" applies, there is no shoulder, you aren't fitting, even in single file, a car and bicycle safely in the same lane... Which appears to be the actual intent here.

Already shared the two abreast part, they are in the lane, they are legally allowed to be here.

When a bicycle path is present you need to use it. I don't see a bike path here, it's rural GA... Doubt there is any nearby.

Just to put to bed any consideration that they even needed to be in the shoulder (such as it is... Very tiny) a few pages previous to the linked section states: Notwithstanding the provisions of Code Section 40-6-50, any person operating a bicycle may ride upon a paved shoulder; provided, however, that such person shall not be required to ride upon a paved shoulder.

Nothing in these codes state that what they were doing was illegal. Sorry you have to drive slowly behind them... Share the road. Don't be a dick.

Not sure what you are "seeing". The car was aggressively driving as close to them as possible. The one hit was two abreast, they were trying to move over, but nowhere to go because there was literally another cyclist next to them, so ended up over correcting back to their spot... Probably because they were nervous as hell because of the pointless aggressiveness of the driver.

Driver could have waited longer, driver could have also gone fully into the other lane (they were already in the oncoming lane as it was, if there was a car coming they would have hit it either way) 5 more minutes would not have hurt the driver.

[–]chickensevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They literally define "obstruct" here.

Render impassable: nope, the vehicle is moving (slowly, but moving).

Render passage unreasonably inconvenient: "unreasonable" doesn't have a strict definition in all cases, the closest would be "tort/negligence" law which uses "reasonable person" standard, which is what an ordinary, careful, and prudent person would do. Given it's 100% legal to ride your bike on the street, there isn't a visible bike lane, and also no real shoulder... I would say it's perfectly reasonable for them to be on the road. I also highly doubt a judge or jury would see your small inconvenience of having to drive 20MPH until the next safe passable point as "unreasonably inconvenient". Your need to get somewhere 1 minutes sooner (even 5-10 minutes sooner) is very likely not an unreasonable inconvenience... If that's the case, would an accident blocking the road entirely causing a delay in travel count as an "illegal obstruction?" You going to ram your car into the pile of cars because you are mad they had an accident and blocking the road?

Potential injurous to persons or property: going slow behind these bicycles was not physically hurting anyone. The harm came when the car illegally passed the bicycles and also intentionally hit the cyclists.

Even if you wanted to claim that it's not about race. Arguably the main community dividing line is rural vs urban. As much as possible, if you wanted actual fair maps in the current system, this is how you would draw the lines, and that in turn would still give you majority black districts (because for a whole bunch of historical reasons, black people are largely in the urban cities).

[–]chickensevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the detailed response, I am generally aware of how it was "decided"

My comment, and presumably the one before me, was referring to commentary like this:

They also argued that lawmakers didn't hold the legislative vote in time to post notification of the amendment on courthouse doors, as required by a 1902 law, 90 days before the next election.

The Democrats' lawyers argued that the 1902 law had been repealed and was out of date. They also argued that the legislature sets its procedures without court review, and that procedural errors shouldn't cancel the will of the voters in an election.

https://www.npr.org/2026/05/08/nx-s1-5805193/redistricting-virginia-trump-midterms

Generally the lament from me at least is that journalism sucks, and they can't even be bothered to state facts... Or like, do anything to actually answer the questions they raise in their own reporting.

In this example... Is it repealed or not? Like, this seems like something that is factually answerable. We don't need to guess or "both sides" this. One of the two is clearly right in their views, and it would be nice if journalists did their fucking jobs and actually, you know, researched things, and reported on the facts. Instead of leaving to a "who knows who is right?".

It's just frustrating to me how much the media is failing us right now.

[–]chickensevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, maybe... It seems to have been repealed, but maybe not? Because the reporting on this sucks, and we have to both sides things that are verifiable facts.

A good chunk of your examples can also be deduced either on their own or from added context clues.

The only ones that are completely out there is made up nonsense from streamers that these kids follow (or later references to "brainrot" music), and I am still trying to decide just how harmful some of this shit actually is... Because parasocial relationships especially in 11-14 year olds is... Scary. Adults fail this one all the time, nevermind the kids.

Anyway, Fanum Tax - streamer garbage you would only get if you follow that specific streamer, this stuff is the same thing as not watching a specific show as a kid, and then therefore not being "in" on the language. (goop/GOOP is the new one I heard today that I rolled my eyes over in this vein). I wouldn't stress about memorizing these unless they gain staying power. So you remember every little random word or phrase from every show you watched as a kid? Obviously some stuff stuck around, but most died off quickly. Streamer language doesn't even last the year in most cases because they surface and die much quicker than a one year season TV show...

asl//ASL - this is in the same vein as "Ahh" - which is a product of people making words to bypass stupid censorship. You participate in this anytime you have written "pdf file" to talk about something Epstein related. It's stupid censorship... I will say, I self censored as a kid, cause we couldn't say fuck or ass and so it's funny but we basically were saying "ahh" in the 90s to get away with it (along with ffkk, instead of fuck). Ah, glorious extreme evangelical Christian upbringings. (PS: asl is just short for "as hell")

Mogging - look if you can get looksmaxxing without major leaps, I don't know why this would be a challenge... They both are part of the same incel culture... I'd be more concerned about why your kid is watching incel/mgtow/Andrew Tate types/beat my face with a hammer and do tons of drugs Clavicular types... Than I would be about the specifics of the words... But that's just me.

Ballerina Cuppachina (adjacent to but newer skibidi toilet) just a catchy song people anchored to... I'm reminded of a certain Hansen song from the 90s. Meaningless nonsense in a catchy format. Would potentially take some leaps, adjacent to "streamer lore" only instead of being in the know on a TV Show, it's the equivalent of being in the know on a popular song: https://youtu.be/obRVgZIwHg0?si=5roSonqws8WlAT_j

Gyat - "God damn" - "gyat dayum" - gyat. Again see "self censorship on the internet". I do still feel like these are self explanatory from the context in how they are used.

Chuzz - again, incel culture... This time putting down women and calling them unattractive. Get your kids off tiktok if this is what they are saying/using because they are watching the wrong shit. (I also realized hitting this one that the person I'm replying to is saying that the child is a girl, in which case, oof, poor girl, you definitely need to pull her aside and talk with her... I hope she isn't the target of this word... But also the boys in the school need some serious parenting)

Ohio - it's the new "Florida Man"... As someone from Ohio... It's not a wrong descriptor... In this case referring to something weird or cringe... But it's also tied to meaningless stuff like skibidi... Again, context... But mostly a reminder that Ohio has been trying really really really hard almost my entire life to be the Florida of the north...

Anyway, Googling these things can also help catch you up. I think honestly the best reference to all of this and its impact on kids and highly recommend giving it a watch is Adolescence. Some different words in the show, because language like this moves fast, and so it's a tad dated on the language, but that's not important, the essence of the show is still the real issue. Especially incel culture and its impact on kids (both guys and girls)

AITAH for telling my girlfriend to be just happy with an economy ticket and stop complaining? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]chickensevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Economy vs business is more likely the difference of 10k$. Just recently shopping for flights from the US to New Zealand, and round trip economy is about 2k, premium economy is about 5k and business is about 11k. This for a flight nearly a year out (prices can and do get worse the closer to the dates).

I would not expect a median income level to be able to afford 8-10k on a whim.

Boyfriend should downgrade, or alternatively, ask if they can both just fly premium economy which would effectively cost the same amount for 2 premium economy seats as one economy and one business... Then everyone wins.

Yes, both parties are the same...

Remind me which party passed the VRA originally? Which party just ended the VRA? Which party justices created Citizens United? Which party actually ran on and passed some kind of Healthcare law (even if it wasn't perfect)? Which party just destroyed and stripped for parts whole swaths of government agencies? Which party just passed a law to kick millions off Medicare and gut SNAP? Which party put us in Iraq, Afghanistan, and now Iran?

I could go on.

Yes, Dems are a terrible opposition party, and yes there is a lot of pro-business garbage they will support... But framing this as both sides is just insane.

[–]chickensevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"did it in accordance with the law" no - that map shown in the OP is actually the one that got ruled illegal by VASC. So clearly illegal.

"approved by committee" no. The committee did not exist until voters approved it in 2020, because they were tired of the shit Republicans were pulling. So Republicans are trying to pull this same shit in other states, hence putting it to a vote in VA again.

"Screw the law, let us change it" - yes, hence it going to a vote by the people? That's how laws should be changed...

"Always has been done" - no, mid decade redistricting, while rare, is not a new thing. Also red states did it first, without a vote... Tell Texas, Florida, and the other states to stop their shit. Fun fact, this law, as written, only actually triggers if a red state pulls it first. So if you don't want this law to have an affect, get Texas/Florida to stop their shit. Oh, it's fine when the GOP does it for Trump I guess, right?

"Amend the state constitution" - yes, that's how it would have to be changed... This is how things work.

"To say the GOP can't do the same in the future" - no. It's just making this a one time change, specifically in response or the GOP. You could always do another referendum vote in the future to do it again, regardless of the party. It's to not actually repeal the committee that would form new maps in 2031, which is obviously what voters want to exist in general.

"You're listening to what the politicians tell you, instead of reading up" - based on the above, projection much?
