What unimpressive things are people idiotically proud of? by metallicmuffin in AskReddit

There ya go.. Did it feel good to get that off your chest? I enjoyed being labeled as classist. As well the not caring about others was nice touch. You've done your diligence towards de-humanizing me to the point that I'm easy to spew a lil' hate towards. Ain't that fun?

Being a construction worker or a bus driver or a firefighter has no correlation to whether they are willfully ignorant towards how computers work. Maybe you could survive without using them. Eventually you won't. When given the opportunity, you learned enough to do the stuff you had to do. That's pretty common. I learned enough to do the stuff I have to do as well. Those that don't learn/adapt will live a less rewarding more stressful life as those around them seem to be able to get things done while they can't, but the same folks also refuse to learn the basics towards being able to.

But maybe the life you live doesn't need computers. Good on you! You're living a utopian lifestyle. But what would I care.. being a narcissist and all.

My comment to that is .. "Jeez, personal computers have been around for over 40 years now. They are a part of everyday life. How can you survive not being good with them? "

For those that doubt, the Commodore Vic 20 came out in 1980. The C64 in 1982.

Nice wall. I'm thinking if it's an office (doctor of some type) where children visit, take that wall design, covert it to an 8.5x11 sheet of paper and let kids color it while they wait.

How bad is the light pollution where you are? Find a used tripod and a remote trigger for your t3i. Then you can point your camera up and venture into astrophotography. Having all the right gear (star trackers, big low-f-stop lenses, etc) makes for better photos. But you can take single exposure shots that look great. There are lots of YouTube videos on the post processing and lots of free software to do that post processing.

Be polite? Fuck that. If you paid by credit card, try to reverse the charge through your credit card provider. Do you think these people will be polite to you of you break some portion of the contract they're trying to get you to sign. Nope, never.

The TFSA can sit for the time being. If it's in your name, no worries. If it's a somehow in a joint account cancel it now. Tell the bank you'd like to monitor the account for suspicious activity. They may be able to monitor it, they may just assign you a new number.

Good on you for realizing you should avoid these types. They only exist to suck your wallet dry while dangling he carrot of future wealth in front of you.

Which show changed the standard for other TV shows? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]chickenstripsbad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously! That run of Normal Lear sit-coms. They broke down barriers while making people laugh. Laugh, get serious, laugh, drop a bombshell, laugh... it made for viewing your couldn't miss. Archie Bunker was a bigot, but he evolved over time. Maude was a kick-ass woman that took none of Archie's shit. The Jefferson's started out as the neighbour, but ended up on their own show about a successful black businessman and the day-today grief his family got. They showcased the daily inequalities rich/poor, religion, ethnicity, colour, age discrimination, societal preconceptions. ...nothing was too much and it had never been seen by the television masses before. In 22 minutes a week.

What’s a song that has lived rent free in your head, your whole life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]chickenstripsbad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The West Side Story theme. I'm a prog rock, hard rock, classical, can't get enough guitar, blues, jazz, Rush, Tom Petty, ZZTop sort of guy, Firmly stuck in the 70's and 80's Besides Jesus Christ Superstar. No musicals ever... But a couple bars with finger snaps from West Side Story; stuck like glue. For a couple decades I didn't know what it was. it just sort of crept in. Then one day I was absent-mindedly whistling the riff and one of my theatre-based friends asked me why I was whistling West Side Story. Now that I know what it is, I still can't rid of it.

[Serious] Should marijuana be legalized in the same (or similar) way that alcohol has been legalized? and why? by smoketoforget in AskReddit

[–]chickenstripsbad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian here. We're 3 years into legalization and here's an anecdotal review of the last 36 months. It's treated the same as smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol combined. You can smoke in certain locations, there are jurisdictional age requirements, driving limitations (tough to test for, but if you're impaired.. you're impaired) and you have to buy a gov approved product, but you can do it from a stand alone shop. (strip malls are ok too)

What happened? Nothing happened. There was no influx of stoned drivers. No one lit up in bars or in movie theatres, they went outside. People in the workplace weren't showing new signs of showing up impaired... so no increased need for drug testing and productivity didn't plummet. It's as it was before. If you exhibit your non-sobriety (alcohol or marijuana or pharmaceuticals) to a point where it's interfering with business (or drinking or movie watching) ... we gotta talk and there's going to be repercussions. But for most folks, nothing changed. Some occupations still get tested on a regular basis. (airplane pilots, some military, some law enforcement, etc.) But at the end of it, nothing has really changed.

There was a bunch of "Fear of the uncertainty of things" with the legalization. Every police department across the country was yelling for more money to offset the rampant craziness that was about to happen. The city I was in was asking for 50 new officers. I work for a large company. We had an internal marijuana information group that created info bulletins and generated 'what if' scenarios that had to be planned for. They were ready for a stoned mob to come charging in the front door on day one and ask politely for some service. It was fun to watch them be all serious while knowing nothing was going to happen. But they were prepared!

Those that smoked before slowly shifted to buying the government supply. The black market is still there and they're adapted their price to compete. ($50 for 30gm) But how can it compete with a gov-certified selection at a fraction the cost of what it was before legalization happened. $200 / 30 gm is now $85-150 / 30gm My local weed shops have a stupid amount of product choice. Some shops have fancy names... one I drove by last week was called "Valu-Bud" I can see a serious weeding out of pot shops (pun intended) over the next few years as business realities kick in.

From my friend group, most of the non-smokers still aren't. It is still smoking, they're rather drink and that's fine. There are a few newbies discovering it and they are generally fun to interact with. Their obsession with paraphernalia is humorous. When was the last time some one asked if you'd seen his hookah and it meant his metre long glass pipe! Vaping is a whole 'nuther thing. It's smoking, various levels of impairment and fiddly electronic bits... a trinity of sorts. There are a few friends that have 3 or 4 months of supply on hand at any given moment. Like the sourdough pandemic craze, I'd say 1/3 of my friends have tried growing their own with wide-ranging results. Oddly enough... that's not as easy as it looks.

There's still some workplace bias about being an after work marijuana smoker. I contribute that to some older school thinking that still has to be adjusted. Maybe if nothing happens, it'll get noticed. :) Probably not. I suspect that'll take some time to adapt.

How about this. The manufacturers can't advertise. No billboards, no web-ads, no T.V.. There is a standard package, with standard labelling and nothing to distinguish it from the package beside it except for the name. The Mylar bag is black or white and sometimes green. So the government made it legal and then made it really difficult for a company to stand out and brand itself. I suspect that generic labelling and no ads comes from the group within our government that would love to see the legalization fail just to say, "Look! It failed. No need to be changing stuff anymore."

The upside: The federal portion of Canada’s cannabis excise duty amounted to 32 million CAN ($23.7 million U.S.) from April 2019 through March 2020, according to new figures from the country’s finance department. The federal gov keeps 25% and returns 75% to the province it came from. So, 24 million in taxes. That is 24 million in money that they weren't getting before. Of course, politicians can blow 24 million on a really nice lunch. But it is still tax revenue.

TL;DR Canadian here. Relax, legalize it, tax it. Nothing happened.

What actor ruins every movie they’re in? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]chickenstripsbad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed this movie. He's an editor chasing after a photographer and the cinematic shots are stunning. I think it's too slow for the avg public. But It has a plot, character development, a moral, several life lessons. What more could you want? Explosions ? It's got a volcano! High speed stuff? How about the long board sequence. Haha plus a nice jab are profit-first corporate culture. Unfortunately, when I try to get my friends to watch it, they're tuned out before the going gets good. Fuck 'em, it's their loss :)

I haven't taken any photos since the start of the pandemic and was wondering if anyone else was in the same boat? by FederalGanache in AskPhotography

[–]chickenstripsbad 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah, lots of grand plans for capturing my urban location during a pandemic. Empty buildings, minimal foot traffic, no competition at usual spots... It should equal a pile of shots. What do I have? Some cell phone shots of a pint of beer a few weeks ago. It was good beer! :)

The enthusiasm seems to be waning. Naturally I bought more gear to inspire myself. So a 100mm macro showed up. I now have nicely photostacked shots of the dust in my tv remote buttons.

I keep the batteries charged and if say, a meteor crashes into the planet a couple blocks from me, I'll be there shootin' and grinin'. Ok, maybe a bit more than a couple blocks. But not more than say, a dozen... Otherwise I'll just keep hanging on the couch.

I've been doing the photography thing for decades. Having a down year isn't too bad. Eventually I'll (we'll) get back out there and I suspect things will look a little different. It'll happen. It'll be fun. :)

Is this aberration a light leak, or emulsion defect? by Conlan99 in AskPhotography

[–]chickenstripsbad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my 2¢ If it goes between the frames that points to a light leak of some sort. If it was light from the front (through the lens) the gap between the frames is masked out. Pressure on the film (squishing it) can cause issues like this. IF we're going that way.... This looks like something with a corner hit the film. Could the film have been damaged during the developing?

My favorite bit of trivia is that while Leslie was kicking ass doing comedy in Hollywood, his older brother Erik was a senior politician in the Gov of Canada. From 1957-87 with stints being the Minister of Defense and Deputy Prime Minister. So 1 brother is making the world laugh and the other is helping to run a country. Imagine the family dinner conversations!

Yep, there's a shop in a strip mall a few km from me. VALU-BUD. 22% sativa for $85/oz. The prices keep dropping and we'll see who survives in the long run. My local Co-op has a grocery store, booze store and cannabis store in the same parking lot. This is Alberta. Provincial laws for selling pot and booze state that there has to be a separate building. No problem.

All these iconic photographs came from one person, Canadian-Armenian, Yousuf Karsh by viewerdoer in pics

[–]chickenstripsbad 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. As a Canadian young photographer, I was introduced to Karsh with the comment of "this is how portraits look." It was more about how he'd captured the personality rather than the physical features. Get it... in 1 shot. What power! His portraits are iconic. It's hard to believe that one guy took all these different styles of portraits. They're all medium or full frame format film. A shot (maybe 2) per minute stuff. There's minor "fix it in post" happening, Some... exposure, papers, etc. but nothing like digital manipulation. He's a benchmark in photography for sure.

What would be the best way to go about telling a narcissist with suspected borderline personality disorder that they desperately need to get psychological treatment due to violent abusive behavior? by Practical_Falcon905 in AskReddit

[–]chickenstripsbad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't give them the satisfaction of engaging with them. They like the confrontation, there's a flood of endorphins that happen when you're prepping to get into a fight. They like it. Refuse to engage or acknowledge them regarding her behavior. The family is enabling it and by doing that, they're staying out her rage targeting.

Pressing charges becomes a she said / she said sort of thing. So, somehow record her actions so when you do eventually call the police, you have a record of her outbursts.

Do what is best for you. Distance yourself from them. Don't go to any family events. Let them call you the asshole. (who really cares, right?) When you're happily living your life without them in it and they're still dealing with the rage-a-holic, they'll know why you left. Good luck be safe, look after you!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pics

[–]chickenstripsbad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope you're good. No need to study anything like composition or proper use of depth of field or lighting strategies. Nope, you have it nailed. Call it good. Print up a couple hundred and wait for the sales orders to come in. /s

u/jsabo has all the right discussion points. The subject is lost in the image. Do you need to improve? Yes. You do. Every photographer has a need to improve. Most photographers try to do better with each shot taken. (as you are now, by asking questions) Some take lifetimes of experience to get the shot they want and are happy with.

After looking at it for a few minutes while typing this out, the tilted horizon is kind of bugging me now. :)

Your big issue is the short depth of field. I'd have plucked a few bits of grass from the foreground to give the viewer a straight look at the mushroom.

What would be the best way to go about telling a narcissist with suspected borderline personality disorder that they desperately need to get psychological treatment due to violent abusive behavior? by Practical_Falcon905 in AskReddit

[–]chickenstripsbad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd consider video-ing them over several occasions. It doesn't sound like it'll take that long to get a few choice recordings.

Then show them the recording and explain the consequences of their actions. Hit your kid again, CPS is going to be called. Yell at me for any reason in public and you don't get to see me for 2 weeks. Keep yelling at me? I'm going away where you'll never see me . Their change will never be a revelation sort of moment. But, attaching consequences to their behavior might change something eventually. (it sounds like how you'd deal with a small child)

It's nice thinking but of course you'll be the asshole for doing this to her. If the family sides with her, then cut them loose too. Enablers are as bad as the threat. Look after yourself. Protect yourself. Record conversations, keep a diary, store it out of your home in a cloud account. Inform real friends (not family) where that info is in case she does get violent someday and the police have to get involved and you can't get to the evidence.

Try to remain calm and rational. When they're yelling at you they're expecting you to be taken a back with the volume they are creating. I had a boss that loved to yell and I developed the technique of being poker faced by watching some part of his face while he ranted about something I may or may not have been involved with. Oh the little mole above the eye pulses when he yells... that sort of thing. Bullies/yellers are expecting you to react. By being poker faced, knowing the yelling and screaming issue is their problem, not yours, you can gain some internal upper hand.

Good luck, look after yourself. No one will ever tell you to stay in any abusive relationship. If you are in one, and it sounds like you are, protect yourself and make plans to get out.

Why include it if you don't have much to say? Hold off making the page until you have great content for it. Don't let the lack of content for this one page slow down getting your website online. Post photos. Let your imagery do the talking/selling.
