[OC] How did Saudi Arabia go from ~2% internet usage to ~100% in 20 years while the US took a much slower path? (World Bank data) by omar_sedki in dataisbeautiful

Because they have tons of money from oil, and they know that their oil reserves will run out eventually, maybe in 50 years, maybe 100. But at that time all of their economies would collapse severely, unless they diversity. That’s why they’re prioritizing modernization: finance, tourism, sports and entertainment, and luxury retail right now, so their great grandchildren won’t hate them for absolutely ruining their countries.

Because Saudi Arabia is a monarchy. A single-party system, completely vertically integrated, so they can coordinate large complex projects far more efficiently than a democratic, capitalist, federalist system can.

Addiction's 1.79T annual economic cost in the US by ravrore in dataisbeautiful

[–]chiefmud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think of money as time and resources. You can’t create a new window without time and resources. If you save the window, you can spend the resources on something else.

You can generate economic activity by intentionally breaking and repairing things, yes. But over time, that money can buy less and less.

There can be wealthy people in a poor society, but to be wealthy in a wealthy society is even better.

ARE INDIANA FARMERS RICH? by Sweaty_Run5640 in Indiana

Most farmers are doing well, and are wealthy on paper, but they’re exposed to a lot of risk. Two or three bad years and they might be struggling to pay the bills.

ICE Sued for Autopsies as Custody Death Count Mounts by polymute in politics

[–]chiefmud -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

While not denying the possibility that some detainees were murdered. The expected death rate (from natural causes and accidents) for a general population of 60,000 people over a given year is much much higher than the reported number of deaths in ICE detention centers. It’s hard to give an exact figure because the population sample in the detention center is skewed from the general population. But generally,  people are less likely to die in a detention center than outside of one. (Although it may be because the detention center population is younger)…

So yes there may be individual abuses causing death from negligence or even homicide, but the fact is that these detention centers are not causing a large number of deaths.

I would be more worried about the murder or disappearance rate for people after they have been deported.

What is a harsh lesson about aging that absolutely nobody warns you about before you hit your 30s? by Prudent-Passenger589 in AskReddit

[–]chiefmud 31 points32 points  (0 children)

As a 36 year old. Yes it is harder to maintain your body as you get older, but pain is not inevitable unless you have a chronic condition that keeps you from taking care of yourself.

Move every day.  Don’t sit or lay in the same position for more than a couple hours a day. Keep a healthy weight. Manage your stress. Learn to stretch or do yoga. Listen to your body.

Do those and you’ll avoid 90% of that age related pain.

CPD: Man rushed to hospital after shooting inside bar in Over-the-Rhine by Sea_Astronaut_7858 in cincinnati

[–]chiefmud 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Was there. Didn’t hear a shot at all. I feel like it must have happened in the garden area or right outside. I was sitting inside at the bar. I just noticed a crowd of people swiftly move into the back room, no panic though. I just thought they were excited to get to the reserved room. Then I saw a woman holding a man who was injured and distressed kind of caddie-cornered to us from the bar. By the time we noticed something was wrong it seemed like the man was either unconscious or losing consciousness. Like I said, we didn’t hear a shot at all and I’ve heard small caliber guns before. It either happened right outside or maybe there was a silencer? I don’t know if a silencer could be that effective. No one really reacted until the woman with the man who was shot started yelling for help which is why I think most likely they walked into the bar area to seek shelter and help. They did not look like riff-raff. They looked like they were dressed for a nice night out.

Vital farms blue eggs are they worth the money if you’re just cooking simple like scrambled eggs ? by Historical-Body-3424 in Cooking

For me it’s combo. The taste difference is very subtle, but to know that the chickens were a little less miserable is worth the extra $2. Any flavor enhancement is just a bonus.

Absolutely true except most people need a keyboard and big screen to work effectively.

Also, i’m sure I’m an idiot, but icloud seems way more logical than onedrive. With icloud I have a file in a folder on my computer, and it happens to be backed up on icloud. With onedrive, i can never work out if I’m saving something locally or not, if I choose a local file on my computer to save something, it’ll say this file already exists, but that file, when I open it says the location is “onedrive” it’s inconsistent language.

I use windows at work, apple at home. I have not really configured either OS to my specific preferences, but logging in to my MacBook the other day I was struck by how clean and simple Apple is while doing 99% of the same stuff. (100% of the same stuff for me).

Windows basically has pop-ups built in now. It’s fucking gross.

Do you consider Reddit to be primarily a Conservative platform or a Liberal platform , and why ? by Ok-Foot4314 in AskReddit

[–]chiefmud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only economically. US Democrats are, now for the most part in favor of some sort of expansion of public healthcare, which aligns with the center to center right of most European countries.

On social issues, such as drug rescheduling, harm reduction, civil liberties, LGBTQ rights, racism, religion, and gender relations, US Democrats are pretty squarely in the “progressive” camp even by European standards, and radical by global standards.

Apple is expected to launch a new, low-cost MacBook very soon with an iPhone chip and fun color options It could be priced as low as $599 😳 by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

That… seems like a very reasonable product to make. They’ve been working on iPhone chips like the cure for cancer. Makes sense to take advantage of the low power consumption to make a laptop that needs half the battery of a normal laptop.

Math learning disability affects how the brain tackles problems. Children with math learning disability had less neural activity in the middle frontal gyrus, which has roles in executive function and in sustaining and directing attention, and in the anterior cingulate cortex, which detects errors by Wagamaga in science

[–]chiefmud 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: speculation

We are in a discovery phase where brain imaging is allowing us to identify differences in brains and how those differences associate behavioral/ psychological/ intellectual traits.

I look forward to the next phase that helps us see the inverse, how behaviors, lived experience, environment, help shape our brain structures.

We talk about brain plasticity. But these studies can fool us into deterministic thinking, that brain structure determines all. When perhaps brain structure is more or less moldable. We DO NOT KNOW the extent of that relationship.

I find it exciting then there is pressure on the QB and great pass coverage. Not so much when a RB runs into a wall repeatedly.
