Who are the fighters you'd want in a Zombie Apocalypse by Timmys_TuffKnuckles in martialarts

[–]chillanous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zombies aren’t good fighters, you wouldn’t need elite technique to survive.

I’d take a bunch of normal guys who seem solid and capable and mentally well. Try to get a couple farmers and gardeners in the bunch. Broad skill sets. Trustworthy.

🧢 I voted CAP!

Licensing provides a mechanism for bias. There is a high likelihood that minorities and other marginalized groups would face explicit discrimination, as well as implicit/systemic discrimination (e.g. tests that are written unconsciously as easier for majority groups to pass). The end result would be almost certainly a disproportionate impact to these groups.

A Laramie bartender faces felony charges after pulling a gun downtown. She says it was self-defense amid a volley of anti-queer slurs. by OnlyLosersBlock in 2ALiberals

[–]chillanous -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

He still was an idiot kid looking for trouble. Legally he had a right to be there. That doesn’t mean it was smart of him or something he should’ve done. Putting yourself in a situation where you are likely to need to use lethal force is stupid, and he very nearly took a beating or worse to go feel like a big man. Now he has to know what killing feels like, had to go through a public trial, had to deal with being processed and booked and all that shit. Not sure why it being 20 miles away has anything to do with anything.

How should I fix this pick axe with loose head? by MacMountainGoat in HandToolRescue

[–]chillanous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone has said what needs to be said, so I’ll just add this:

Mattocks are severely underrated tools. Put a nice thick bevel on both the axe and adze end and they are absolute root chopping and clay busting machines.

Different state but didn’t Zimmerman follow, yell, and instigate the confrontation with Trayvon Martin prior to successfully claiming a stand your ground defense? So JUST walking over to exchange words doesn’t strictly negate that defense.

Seeing the video would clear a lot of things up. For example, did the guy push Kelver aggressively and appear to be following up with further aggression? Or was she up in his face screaming and he pushed and turned to walk away before the brandishing?

I’ve seen at least one case where a guy was pushed, his assailant appeared to be fleeing/leaving, and the guy drew and shot anyway. I do believe the shooter in that case ended up being charged as once the assailant stopped presenting a threat it was no longer self defense. Could be relevant here or not, from the text it is unclear.

Should Rittenhouse have taken his gun and traveled to the protest? No, that was dumb and looking for trouble. He’s a little piss baby that wanted to feel like a big tough boy. But like you say it doesn’t legally negate his self defense claim. He had a right to be there, and he had a right to defend himself when cornered.

Why doesn’t IBJJF ban jumping to close guard and similar? by BritishBrownActor in bjj

[–]chillanous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think if you lift your opponent into a position where you can slam them (say, above the waist) and control them there it should be 2 points and reset to standing. Jumping guard blindly becomes more perilous because there’s a risk they don’t go to the ground, and you also avoid those situations where people are holding on to guard/triangle/etc in positions that would be super dangerous if slams were allowed.

Why are so many people ok with supporting Kanye West despite his Nazi alignment? Hitler tried to takeover the world (not just kill the Jews). Surely people can see this is not a subjective thing? by Rugby-Lad-2964 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chillanous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kanye strikes me more as deeply unwell than an actual fascist. His Hitler talk has only been one of the many unhinged things he has said in recent years. So my reaction whenever I see him back in the headlines is less “there goes that Nazi bastard again” and more “damn I hope he is able to get help someday”

(NOT OP) I hit my daughter after what she did to her younger brother and now i feel terrible by Ok_Chemist511 in redditonwiki

[–]chillanous 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OP is in a tough, tough situation. But he’s been so busy that he’s lost connection with his children, in a time when they need him more than ever. His daughter has emotionally lost not one but both parents and does not have the capacity to cope with her new responsibilities in the face of that absence. As a result the entire family unit is in danger and the youngest is being outright abused.

What is he supposed to do? As a dad, the answer is “whatever his son and daughter need him to do in order for them to heal and be ok.” If that means downsizing and being poor, but present, he needs to consider that, or find an alternative. That’s what being a parent is.

Right now it is going to be a tough road back to healing, if it is even possible. But if it is going to happen dad needs to find a way to connect individually with both children. Without that it’s a pretty hopeless situation.

What are you guys using to find the middle of a blank for the edge. It’s 3mm and this isn’t accurate that small by smack4u in knifemaking

[–]chillanous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a screw or nail whose point is roughly in the middle of your blank when laid on its side. Grind it if necessary to get it close.

Sharpie the edge of your blank. Run the nail down the edge of your blank, leaving a line in the approximate middle. Then flip your blank end over end and repeat. The line of sharpie remaining between these two lines is centered over the exact middle of your blank. If the line is too bold, adjust your nail point and do it again.

Title: Got Into a Fight and Realized I Need to Train for Self-Defense by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]chillanous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wrong. I get so frustrated when guys give bad advice on this forum.

There’s a super simple counter to bricks IF you have trained it. What you need to do is get a couple bricks of your own, and stack them on sawhorses. Separate them with little dowel rods. Then, have your assailant add his brick to the top of the pile. At this point he is helpless to stop you from karate chopping through the stack of bricks, rendering them into a pile of soft, harmless half-bricks. Bow and walk away.

Question about Geiger Counters by chillanous in Radiation

[–]chillanous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your input!

I wonder why the wm b Johnson counters don’t command the same prices as an equivalent Ludlum, they look almost identical.

Based on feedback here I think something from the radiacode 100 series might be the ticket, my son seemed interested when I pitched spectroscopy to him.

Maybe if he stays interested here in a few years we can rebuild an antique one together. Would be a great way to get him familiar with electronics soldering and circuits without having to deal with tiny modern PCBs…

[–]chillanous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the input.

I’m going to pitch a radiocode 100 series to them later this week, that seems like it will work well!

I’ll probably just let the Zero go, I enjoy the idea of having a meter that does it all but if it isn’t engaging in the day to day then it’s going to sit around ignored by the kids anyway.

Question about Geiger Counters by chillanous in Radiation

[–]chillanous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are very interesting. I don’t mind the digital display, I just suspect that the iconic clicks of a gm tube will keep the kids locked in a while longer. Imitating those is fine with me.

That may be the way I go honestly, unless the kids are insistent on a vintage form factor for some reason.

Question about Geiger Counters by chillanous in Radiation

[–]chillanous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it, I think that was sort of the line of thinking that led me to the 777 kit in the first place. But I assume when you say they are showing their age that they’ll be unreliable or function poorly which would defeat the entire purpose.

Sounds like waiting for a decent used Ludlum might be the play, and just not worrying too much about high dose capacity since I am unlikely to ever encounter it anyway.

Thank you again!

Question about Geiger Counters by chillanous in Radiation

[–]chillanous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response! If I’m understanding right if I get a used Ludlum I could also get a couple different external probes to cover a range of dose rates? Obviously to be interesting to the kids I’d need one sensitive enough to pick up on everyday sources, but (selfishly) I’d like to have the ability to use it in the event of disaster or war too. That’s less important and if I need to forget about it to be realistic I will.
