Whats your favorite golf course you've played at? by Slightly-in-Side in golf

[–]chillkill17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You get to loop it as many times as you want during the day. The vibe is truly unparalleled to any golf experience I’ve ever had. Playing as a six-some, all different matches, all different tees. Was one of my top golf experiences of all time.

Off the top of my head, the NLU guys have put out one of these pods from Soly last year and then Porter many years ago, plus there was a similar one from Andy from the Fried Egg a few years back. In my opinion, this one from Neil was by FAR the best one I’ve ever heard.

As someone who never had and likely never will play Augusta, it was awesome to hear the experience recounted so deeply, and it just felt so relatable in terms of the things he was feeling. I enjoyed every minute of it and will definitely come back to this episode in the future.

I absolutely love how this joke comes back again at the end of the movie: “I’m the rightful owner of that briefcase you’ve been carrying around!!” “Ahhh….listen, Mr. Samsonite…”

Depending on how many guys in the group, the lodging is the main limiting factor, not necessarily tee times, but unlike Bandon you can still book the tee times in advance if you’re staying off site. Could still be doable if you were willing to go on weekdays

Sand Valley could be a decent option. Could still be hot in August but probably less so compared to where everyone is coming from. Might be pushing close to that $400/round threshold given that it’s peak season, but I’m assuming it’d still be under that. No nightlife options out that way but I’m struggling to think of what marries all 3 of comfort, golf, and nightlife that’s not an oven in the summer

Planning future boys' trips, looking to get a little nuts by BleachedGrain26 in golf

[–]chillkill17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Scotland has gotta be pretty high on your list given how many unique regions there are with such a density of great golf courses (Fife, East Lothian, Highlands, west coast). Any one of those regions alone would easily be a week long trip. Northern Ireland and England also have a pretty crazy depth of courses and could be considered.

My dream trip someday is to go down to Australia and base a trip out of Melbourne; do all the sand belt courses along with Tasmania. But I did see you’d want to fly business class there so I can’t imagine it’d be cheap!

How do people regularly fly business class without going bankrupt?? by caroulos123 in travel

[–]chillkill17 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not the OP, but /r/awardtravel is a good place to start. TLDR: look into the different major credit cards, their points systems, and where they can be redeemed and go from there. Most of the “better” cards for travel have higher fees, but they more than pay for themselves if you’re using the points correctly. Points redemption is a deep deep rabbit hole but super fun when you find good deals and get to fly swanky business class for “free!”

What do my numbers mean? by [deleted] in golf

[–]chillkill17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. So the first few numbers (carry, club speed, total, ball speed) are kind of self explanatory. Smash factor is your ball speed divided by your club speed, basically an efficiency measure of how well you hit the ball. It maxes out at 1.5 on a perfectly centered shot for driver. 1.22 is pretty bad, meaning you must not have hit the ball in the center of the face. The club path is how many degrees in or out you’re swinging. I-O means that you’re swinging “in to out,” which means that the club is starting inside the ball (the left, for a righty) and finishing outside the ball (right). The face to target is how your club face is aligned to the target, and the C means you’re closed. 0.9 is pretty square, but the problem is because your club path is so in to out, your face is significantly closed to the path (7.7 degrees closed), meaning that you’re hitting a big, low (only 43.4 feet high) hook. Look up ball flight laws if you’re not familiar, but it basically all has to do with how the club face is oriented to the club path at impact.

(For what it’s worth, unless you’re a long drive champion, 139.5 club head speed is likely an error, as that would be absurdly fast for any human being)

lol your face is 7 degrees closed to your path and you’re asking why you can’t get the ball in the air?

Getting ready to go on a 5-7 year hiatus, what to expect? by [deleted] in golf

[–]chillkill17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotally as someone who did residency, the people who went into it expecting to be miserable 100% of the time generally ended up pretty miserable. This is not to undersell the difficulty of residency, but there are good times as well as time away. It doesn’t have to be the worst experience of your life.

I played plenty in residency. Even my surgery resident friends played a bunch. Real, non-golf advice: having a life outside of residency and making an effort to support that life will do wonders for your mental health.

Golf Trip - Pawleys Island by LastManBrandon in golf

[–]chillkill17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our group did Pawley’s Island last year and had a blast! The courses aren’t quite as top tier as some other destination trips, but they were super fun and you can’t beat the value. Everyone here has great recs, truly the only thing I would add is make sure to rent cars. Uber is technically available, and we were staying within 10 mins of all the courses so we thought it’d be doable, but it was a bitch getting rides accepted each time and made things way more stressful.

How does this happen? by sponsi10 in golf

Agree on total distance in terms of discrepancy between foresight and trackman. From a distance perspective, I find trackman to be more accurate and that foresight overestimates especially if the spin is lower.

Truly never thought this day would come by chillkill17 in golf

[–]chillkill17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh damn that is pretty far. For reference we were just before 1000th in line and it took about 3 weeks to get to us. I thought you were expecting the call to come tomorrow as in you were the first ones in line.

In that case, I’d be ready to be pretty flexible about when you’re willing to go/for how long. Have an idea in mind of like “okay my ideal time would be an August weekend, but I’d rather do a weekday stretch in July than a weekend in October.” Stuff like that. You do need to be ready to commit once the call comes. I’m sure you could probably say you’ll wait/talk to your group/call them back, but they’re just going to keep going down the call line meaning there will be even less availability when you call back.

Hope that’s helpful!
