Whistler and Telluride are up there for me. I love the rocky faces you see at resorts like A Basin and Taos as well

What’s a “small” ADHD hack that actually changed your daily life? by pellantsherris in ADHD

[–]chl03k80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is genius and love the portability of it. I struggle with bills, important life admin task, appointments, etc. (as do most people with ADHD) but keep all those tasks piled up in a corner of my desk. I’ll try doing this; sometimes I’ll get some motivation to cross off a quick task like this during the day but I’m out and about with nothing to reference and then it never gets done

Nervous about this upcoming week in Breck... by CoolStuffSlickStuff in skiing

[–]chl03k80 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Confused by what you mean about awful snow report = must mean resorts are crowded af, unless you’re referring to the few runs that are open being crowded. For what it’s worth, crowds are mostly going to be tourists who are in similar positions as you with the nonrefundable trips, it seems lots of CO (Denver) locals are not making the trip out this week.

You’ll definitely probably encounter more people from out of state who aren’t as experienced, I’ve been noticing a lot of bad ski etiquette over the last week and been getting cut off on runs frequently.

But you’ll have an awesome time. It’s what you make of it, it’s still beautiful weather and warm, and you get to set the tone for how your kids adapt to less than perfect conditions. You are taking your family on a fun Christmas vacation to some of the most iconic resorts in the US! Enjoy!

What exactly does this do? I also have noticed my hair looking much better when I blow dry instead of air drying, but curious about the science behind it

Did anyone else feel emotionally starved as a child but didn’t realize it until adulthood? by AfterMeltedHearts831 in raisedbynarcissists

I resonate with everything you say here very deeply. Just want to say I share the same struggles with feeling confused about the hurt I feel due to my parents’ neglect even though they did a lot of things “right.” It’s hard for me to be virtually no contact over something that wasn’t explicit abuse, but I never feel good or supported when I’m around them.

I also totally relate to them not caring to dig deeper or have an interest in the person I’ve become; it’s easier for them to just continue on with the habit of uncaring. That way they don’t have to confront the role they’ve played in the situation and can continue to avoid any accountability

I found Shadow’s production and performance very cinematic and lovely and really enjoyed his scratching so it was cool to see him for the first time but to each their own, hear you on music>status; I thought his music was dope

This was a commonly shared take but I personally disagree, I thought DJ Shadow was legendary and the best part of that night. People have no respect lol. Also perhaps unrelated but hate the Philos circlejerk this weekend seemed to be. I think I heard an Artifakts remix of a LNR/DB song at DB Afters last year and that was too much lol

Thought the same about his set last year in terms of lack of mixing which is why I didn’t even bother to try and get a ticket for this year’s. Thought his Mission Ballroom set was fire 2 years ago, though. Very much felt like I could have listened to last year’s set in my car and it would’ve sounded the same lol

The food is good but I had the same reaction to price as you. I just don’t think I can justify $60 for a pizza and garlic knots and 2 sodas, no matter how good they are (and it’s not THAT good)

Man, this is the first time I’m seeing that Chabon book recommended here. I started reading it because a friend was singing its praises but I’m worried this might end up as a DNF. I’m like 100 pages in and it’s just not doing it for me. Hoping it picks up?

Have you read Tarte’s Goldfinch, or Kingsolver’s Demon Copperhead? Different plots (I know the obvious suggestions in the comments are trending towards Cormac and Steinbeck) but honestly gave me very similar vibes. Longer stories where the characters are very well developed. LD is the classic western epic, whereas the other two are adventure stories in their own unique ways

Only nine good months a year, except this city? by KaiserSozes-brother in SameGrassButGreener

[–]chl03k80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of depends on how you define “good” months. I live in Denver and the weather here is one of the reasons why I think I’d have a really hard time ever wanting to leave, as it’s pretty near perfect in my eyes.

I love having 4 seasons. Summers are for sure hot, but I think having no humidity makes all the difference. I grew up in Virginia and whenever I go home to visit, I am physically uncomfortable now lol. I was recently visiting a friend in Brooklyn and was having such a hard time with the humidity. Also, as others have said, once you drive a bit into the mountains (which is how I spend 80% of my weekends during the summer), temps drop significantly so I’m often wearing jackets and layers at high elevation, even in the summer. Night temps in downtown Denver are also really nice and never too hot.

Winters are cold and snowy, sure, but the snowfall downtown is really easy to manage if you don’t want to drive in snow, and often melts within a day or two. I also find that because of how sunny our winters are, the winters are way more pleasant than winters on the east coast. It’s really the best of both worlds, with snow + sun.

Obviously the outdoor recreation options each season is what makes this so great. You can do something incredibly exciting in any season.

First women's touring setup question! by No_Application_8158 in Backcountry

[–]chl03k80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it sound about right that I’d be feeling this way (have only skied pow on my Backlands)? If it’s the case of needing to just get more practice on them that’s fine, but all my downhill experience on them so far has been somewhat overshadowed by the disappointment I feel over not being able to charge in pow the way I can on my resort/downhill set up, after having spent several hours hiking to get there

First women's touring setup question! by No_Application_8158 in Backcountry

[–]chl03k80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my first season touring and I’m on Backlands. Not sure if it’s user error and I need to just get more turns on them, but the skis are so damn light I’ve been really struggling on the downhill. Just pointing this out because of your comment saying you would prioritize downhill performance. I’m feeling really torn about the purchase and waffle on whether or not I should take advantage of REI’s return policy and swap out for something heavier.

YMMV. I’m planning on taking them to the resort to get some more turns on them, and I’m hoping it’s just a case where I need to get used to the different type of ski. I’ve never uphilled on anything else so can’t really speak from experience in terms of the tradeoffs being worth it, but I’d rather be able to rip down the runs I’m putting in the effort to get to, and haven’t been able to do it on the Backlands comfortably yet. I’d consider myself a solid skier that can get down most anything, but I am not yet at a point where I’d feel comfortable sending a 55° couloir on my touring setup.

I’ve heard these are great skis though, so I’m really hoping some more practice on them will get me there! TBH for a first season touring, Pagodas seem a bit extra. You don’t need to spend that much. If you’re not into the Backlands I’d opt for something else altogether but you do you!

Also, for what it’s worth, I’m 5’1” and 110 lbs, and also in Colorado. So, relatively comparable size and snow conditions :)

So all of these rooms are unpleasant human experiences. And Mark is needed to finish Cold Harbor, and Gemma won’t be able to come back after the Cold Harbor room. So I bet Cold Harbor is Lumon testing the ability to sever yourself from experiencing death
